Microsoft Consoles and Updates

I'm going to miss that new console feeling as well whenever I have a Series X but if that's the price we to pay to have the such an excellent display of backwards compatibility I'm more than happy to accept it.

Xbox does BC stuff really great but still excited to play Halo and Forza. Hopefully all these studios they picked up start delivering soon. Back compat is cool but also let’s have new and exciting too.

Powerline adapters is an option but I dunno how good that is as an option. I have one and it literally makes no difference, but there is only a single wall between my PC and the router so it's already a bit of a redunancy.

WiFi is just so temperamental tho, especially with how much shit has a wireless signal now.

Yep, unboxing the Xbox is superior - although the fully recyclable nature of the PS5 one is better really. But there’s zero new console excitement with it. The PS5 was so much better for that. In a completely different league.

However that new console excitement was very short lived and much prefer using the Xbox now. In hindsight I’d give up that excitement for the functionality and the logical and simple to use dash of the PS4. They could have added the dynamic backgrounds and card system to that and it would have been basically perfect.

I still find the PS5 to be more enjoyable to use. I know it seems unimportant but the slick, clean 4K presentation of the PS5 is so nice. I like hovering over the game apps and seeing an amazing promo image splash across my TV and the music of the game starts to play. It’s an odd equivalent but selecting a game on PlayStation has the same feel of sitting back and putting a movie on. I don’t know if that description translates to other people but it’s the best way I can describe it. It’s got a feeling of cinema or luxury about it.

Where as Xbox is only 1080p and extremely cluttered. It’s got a cheaper feel to it. Which goes away when actually playing a game. But presentation impacts my overall opinion and feel of these machines I suppose. So I like PS5 more.

I guess this is mirrored by the content these systems offer too. PS5 being home to the big, premium, next gen shiny titles and Xbox being a non-stop tap of cool but older games for £11 p/m. You know I’m a big lover of Gamepass but it all goes in to this cheaper, honestly lesser feel of these consoles.

I like Xbox, don’t get me wrong. And for the first time in a long time owning both machines doesn’t feel redundant like it has in previous gens because of the different things they offer. Expensive, newer and fewer over cheaper, older and more.

But I love the PS5. It’s such a cool console and I still find it an exciting place to play almost a year on.

The Coalition are doing a Unreal Engine 5 demo soon as part of GDC21... seeing as they're pretty much Microsoft’s Unreal specialists I'll be interested to see the whole thing.

just to say, and this might have been mentioned by others. The PS5 does have a better wi-fi adapter in it than the base PS4, I think the Pro had it too. I suspect that's the same for the Series consoles and the base Xbox One, so Maf expecting a leap isn't crazy, just depends what you're upgrading from

I looked out of interest and according to this website the PS5 has a better adapter than the PS4 Pro.

Which explains why the PS5 shreds this shit.

Eurogamer confirms that the adapter in the Series X is better over the base Xbox One. Couldn’t see anything about the One X, though. The downloads seem like they are the same speed to me but can’t find an article to confirm if it’s the same

I agree with @Maf it wasn't particularly exciting to fire up for the first time. A whole new controller and a whole new dash would've made it considerably more exciting for me for sure. There are obviously downsides to this approach like missing features present with PS4 that aren't there on PS5 but I definitely still prefer that myself, it's known I've never been a fan of the Xbox dash. Saying that though, if you are already engrained in the Xbox ecosystem and play most of your games there then I can see why you'd like the familiarity of sticking with the same dash.

I can't really talk about download speeds, games or much else yet as I haven't played anything on it or downloaded anything aside from the initial console setup updates. I will say though that PS5 downloads are a huge improvement over PS4, I know that much.

I think both console launches have been the worst in history due to the drought of hardware supply and the drought of (genuine PS5/XBSX) games.

I was at the (virtual) checkout with a PS5 in my basket, I dumped it though after I challenged myself to provide a good reason to buy it ........ there wasn't a reason I could think of ?‍♂️

I get where people are coming from but even without the spanking new software (it'll come in time) I'm happy with my decision to jump on board with the new consoles... I have an Xbox One X sitting in the conservatory but absolutely no desire to go and boot it up and use it, I'll miss the auto hdr, fps boost and fast loading that comes with the newer console too much.

For me my PS5 has already been worth it down to DeS, Miles Morales, Sackboy and Rift Apart alone. I know two of those you can play on PS4 but the experience is so much better on PS5 it elevates it to a greater level than it otherwise would of on PS4.

I’m sure I’ll have the same feeling with my XSX when I boot up The Ascent, Psychonauts 2, Sable, Back 4 Blood and Horizon 5 later this year too.

It’s different and personal for every one though, at the start of every gen, every console I see as investment for my future happiness for the next 7 or so years so always tend to dive in Day 1, others feel more comfortable waiting until that huge tent pole release comes out and stokes their interest. It’s all good, there’s no right or wrong answer.

Wasn't sure where to put this, but I think the Xbox eco-system deserves more credit than it receives.

A few of my gaming group played Sea of Thieves , and a fourth player, who doesn't own an xbox, and no longer has a graphics card up to scratch was moaning because he couldn't join.

We convinced him to revive his Gamepass account and he signed in via Chrome and streamed the game flawlessly through his laptop. No download at all. It even carried over the save info from when he previously played it on a PC.

And as Nag said, the upgrade is worth it for the features alone. I tried playing a base PS4 around a friends house the other day. Nah. Xbox easily edges past the PS5 for me now, FPS boost is a game changer for some games, the quick resume works better and Gamepass is still the best value for money in gaming. The upgrade process for games is handled far better than Sony's laughable effort (looking at you, FF7).

It also hasn't crashed once, unlike the PS5 which has had several moments where it has to be turned off at the mains, and frequently has cloud synching issues with save games, which after losing all my progress in Returnal, makes me nervous.

I think it gets a lot of credit now? It’s leaps and bounds ahead of ps5 from the podcasts I’ve heard in terms of accessibility and options. Just little things about the ps5 sound like a bit of a let down on top hardware issues.

I keeping looking out for that klarna malarky. Is it GAME and Smyths only? I have a terrible credit score so maybe won’t be able to anyway but I’d like to know at least.

Think box.co.uk does Klarna as well?
