spatular
£700, the video just finished, not sure if that was with or without disk drive, assume with? Edit - too slow edit2 - looks like no disk drive

one-armed dwarf
I thought that was a rather poor showing, even if it largely matches what my own realistic expectations are. This isn't going to appear attractive until DF dig into it's capabilities a bit Like, the Rebirth cutscene (which has spoilers lol) isn't exactly showing me the gameplay I want to see to indicate an improvement. Show some fighting in Gongaga at 60fps 4k, not a cutscene Youtube streams aren't a good venue for this type of thing
Maf
Not only is that price insane, they did what I feared and was focus on games that already look amazing. Spider-Man 2 already runs at 1440p, 60fps with RT. It doesn’t need a PS5 Pro The slight good thing was briefly showing Final Fantasy and Alan Wake 2 at the end. But it was so quick there’s no way to tell what’s different. I didn’t expect to be sold on it today, but was hoping they would do a better job than that
spatular
Don’t think I’ll be getting one of these but then I said that about the last lot of pro consoles and ended up buying them later more likely to upgrade the pc.
Nag
Apparently the upright stand isn't even included... 😂 You'd think with how people are about money and prices nowadays this would literally be dead on arrival but we know how people are and I think we thought the same about the Portal. I'm certainly not biting this time round... I'll slum it for the rest of the generation.
Maf
I actually think a PS5 Pro is still a good idea. Having an upscaler (assuming it’s on par with DLSS or something) will be revelatory for a lot of these games struggling with resolution. It’s still new technology, it’s their own version and it’s the first console to do it. If it is what they say then people looking for performance upgrades - it sounds really good. When more details get out about it I’d also still be interested in how it compares price wise to a similarly spec PC. But that price is so nuts. I think no matter how good it is the ask is too much and people won’t buy it

Nag
The thing is, for me at least, I don't care what it can do for old games... I've already played them. Having Rebirth look a little bit better won't make a blind bit of difference, I'd be more inclined to replay it if it hits Xbox. Focusing on old games doesn’t sell this thing at all... and if Sony keep going with cross generation games like they have been then there's even less reason. one-armed dwarf
I can't remember where I heard it, but I think it was in regards the stuff with Phil Spencer saying that the marketplace for gaming hardware isn't growing, and techniques to reduce hardware costs arent possible anymore. So the thing with systems like this is you're really only selling to the die hard crazies, the kinds who have 4090s and OLEDs or whatever and want the best. The gaming equivalent of iPhone wankers (yes I'm self reporting here) Point being I wonder if Sony have priced in the expected demand of this, in that it won't come close to PS4 pro sales and maybe they're fine with that
Maf
A separate disc drive is £100 extra It was not a great demo or pitch but I’m so onboard for this PSSR thing I really think this could be amazing. But there’s 2 realities here. There’s cost of sale and customer expectation. Given the benefit of the doubt they aren’t trying to rip people off, I still think those 2 values are so out of whack. Consoles exist in a weird spot because they’re “cheap” products in an expensive hobby. But I think they’ve pushed it too far this time. Even if it makes sense on a spreadsheet, I don’t think it makes a lot of sense in reality
Nag
There's another thing to consider with this too... where does pricing for a PS6 (and next gen Xbox) go after this? Microsoft are already saying their next machine is going to be the biggest jump ever in a console generation, obviously that can't be done at a £500 price point anymore given this things price. one-armed dwarf
Microsoft should probably just not release that machine tbh, could be a Concord situation for them especially at these prices 😬 Maf makes a good point of the games they chose to demo this with. It sorta stands out that they prefer to demo their first party stuff. Maybe cause they think they're just better games? But a Cyberpunk demo, or Alan Wake II but definitely cyberpunk could have been a head turner. But who needs more pixels for TLOU2? It's also, to Nag's point, a game many aren't inclined to replay. Unlike Cyberpunk Then again maybe after the delisting in 2020 they're all like 'fuck cyberpunk'. Which would be understandable lol

I was going to say unlike the PS4 Pro this seems more like a half way step between a PS5 and PS6. To me I think a Pro version is the same but more. Again about the PSSR (hate the name btw), this is a brand new technology the standard PS5 can’t do in anyway. It’s not just better, faster - it’s brand new tech. Of course the design of the PS5 Pro is very similar and I bet they still use their custom SSD and what not, which is why I say half way step to a next gen console. But this upscaler tech was in the leaked Xbox documents when they were talking about next gen being in 2028. PS5 Pro seems to be bringing some version of it now…with a cost I think there’s a hard tug-of-war going on between video game tech outpacing consoles at such a rapid pace and the price of keeping up. Digital Foundry was talking about 50 series cards next year it’s like whoa. EDIT:

That's fair enough and if Sony believed in generations as much as they said they did back when this generation was building up (which was a straight up lie) maybe I'd be more impressed or interested... but the fact of the matter is until PS6 gets here (and probably even after that to be fair) all of Sony's games are going to work on a base PS5. Do I want prettier games?... yes, because I'm a graphics whore. Am I going to shell out 700 quid for prettier PS5 games? No... I'll slum it and upgrade at a proper generational leap. mfnick
£700 with no disc drive 😱 Wowsers. So that’s effectively £800 for me to use. Incredible. I wouldn’t even pay that for a PS6 nevermind a half step console. Genuinely may as well get a PC at that point. Very interesting and personally good to hear 3/4 of people choose Performance mode though. Well done gamers, finally something you’re doing right. See Devs, 60fps does matter to us. How the hell is FFVII Rebirth in that list but not FFXVI too? I’ve yet to play the full XVI release but looks like it wouldn’t even help there. Damn. 49 minutes ago, Maf said: PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can apply to more than 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games playable on PS5 Pro. one-armed dwarf
That list reminds me how annoying console upgrades are. Leaving out the (hugely significant) cost factor when talking about pc upgrades, it sorta feels like consoles inherit the annoying part of performing upgrades without the benefit of it enhancing everything you own automatically. It all has to be selectively enhanced, using visual and performance settings that might not even be what you want Tho honestly the price of this is already hitting mid tier GPU prices so it would be interesting to compare performance against a 4070/5070, cause that might just be a better option all round maybe
