one-armed dwarf
Yeah the social media tweets have to be ignored tbh, they are always these superlative soaked fawning praise pieces and I always find them suspicious That said the director of this did an excellent Evil Dead reboot so I'm fairly sure he has the right instincts to attempt an Alien resurrection, though hopefully not one that's like Alien Resurrection

one-armed dwarf
Burning (2018) - This is a weird film to try and say something about cause as I watched it I didn't think a whole lot of it. But thinking about it afterwards and reading some things (which I try to avoid doing generally but not this time) I think there's some really understated social criticism in it that's very relevant to our current day, masked by a mysterious story that makes it quite challenging I'm unwilling to really explain much about it though, but I'll say it's a South Korean film and one of the main roles is by Steven Yeun* who you'll know as Glenn from The Walking Dead. Each of the three main characters put in really good performances. The story is based off a Haruki Murakami short story and if you've read any of his stuff they can tend to be quite listless, mysterious and sometimes upsetting stories, and without knowing the original short story inspiration it at least evokes that same impression to me. * (edit apparently he was in Beef as well, which is meant to be really good but I've not seen it so I'll have to add it to the watchlist)
Maf
Borderlands to make less than $10 mil opening weekend 😬
Nag
I wouldn't watch that if it came straight to Prime... the trailers were godawful.
Maf
Even then maybe not. At best I’ve considered buying Borderlands 2 on Steam for £5 but even then I’ve gone…nah
Maryokutai
I'll watch it out of morbid curiosity when it lands on a streaming service I have, but probably not a second sooner. 115m does seem like a smaller budget for this kind of movie though, especially with big names like Blanchett, Curtis, Heart and Black attached to it. I wonder if this was seen as a safe bet for the studio (though maybe they strike gold in China, you never now – it saved the Warcraft movie after all). Maryokutai
Oh, wow, this is actually cool news for a change: I recently watched the first two again and the older I get, the more I appreciate them. The theme about how much of yourself you're willing to sacrifice in exchange for being a supportive family member is wonderfully interwoven with a comparatively grounded superhero universe that still can delight with that giddy excitement of watching an underdog find out about their potential. Dash realising he can run over water* is just as great a scene as any Spider-Man swinging for the first time. I just hope this isn't just a cash grab but something Brad Bird (its chaperone) genuinely wanted to do. *for reference: Spoiler
one-armed dwarf
indiewire have a top 100 list of the 2000s, the decade not the century so far. It's interesting cause 2000s can feel like an overlooked decade sometimes. A lot of stuff I haven't heard of before that I want to check out. Some stuff that's on my list but is very long so been putting off. I was not expecting their number 1 pick https://www.indiewire.com/features/best-of/best-movies-2000s-1235032266/
shinymcshine
The No 1 was an odd choice, but when I saw Laura Harring central to the cover montage I guessed everything might be okay - and for the one's I've seen I wouldn't disagree about the inclusion of the films (but placings are so subjective). There's clearly some notable exclusions though.
Jimboxy
I haven't read it properly yet, but I'd say the no.1 choice invalidates the list somewhat? They don't even really do a good job of justifying it in the right up about it. Admittedly I've not watched it since it came out, and I'm now tempted to watch it again, but I'm fairly confident it isn't going to be on anyone else's best film of the last 24 years lists
Maryokutai
I had the same feelings about n°1 but I was a teenager when it came out, so who's to say how I'd look at it today. Might be worth revisiting. A lot of Asian productions in there that I never heard about and which I might look up. A bit surprised Man from Earth wasn't on there (unless I missed it), that movie stuck with me for a while after seeing it despite it being as low-budget as you can get. The list also made me feel really old. Some movies on there have been on my watchlist since they came out, which in some cases was 20 years ago. one-armed dwarf
I like the list cause it's got a great balance of international cinema, it's not just an anglocentric love-in. It's also dangerous for me cause it can turn into an impulsive shopping list.
Maf
I’ve never seen the Dune movies so don’t get the specifics of this, but its still so funny.
one-armed dwarf
The new Alien film sounds a bit of a Force Awakens situation, a film being used to relitigate Alien as a franchise to audiences by replaying the hits. It sounds alright but I'm happy to wait for streaming on this one. Kermode's review has some spoilers in it, he says it's pretty unoriginal and does nothing new, not bad not great but still good fun. Gena Rowlands died the other day (RIP), so I watched Opening Night (1977) which is a very self-reflexive sort of story about aging and acting. Premise is about an actress doing a play about the menopause when a young fan suddenly dies and it kinda jumps into the study of its subject matter from that point. It's not strictly about womanhood tho as it's also sort of about the creative friction between the ways that actors try to find inspiration for their performances and the requirements placed on them by directors and producers. It is an interesting, tho very messy film with an ending which didn't work for me at all, but it sort of felt like the ending itself was supposed to be some sort of commentary on the other films that Gena did with her husband. Maryokutai
I got that vibe from the trailer as well, it looks like it might be a competent and modernised take on original Alien but to me it feels completely unnecessary as a result. As uneven Prometheus and Covenant were, at least they tried to do something different. I'm obviously overreaching a lot here and I will watch it at some point just to have a real opinion on it, but the more they do with that IP, the more I keep thinking that walking away from it after Aliens would have been a more creatively sane choice. Nag
Alien: Romulus... I'll say that two thirds of the film are good... not great but good... but fuck me did i hate the last third. People can watch at their own leasure and make up their own minds but wow! Some good effects but Aliens reigns supreme still.
