DisturbedSwan
http://www.geek.com/games/no-mans-sky-wipes-your-discoveries-after-two-weeks-1668222/ Quote One of the biggest selling points of No Man’s Sky for many folks was that they could name solar systems, planets, animals, plants, and regions within planets to whatever they wanted (provided it was family friendly, of course). In what seems to be a recurring theme for this game, it turns out that this feature isn’t exactly what was promised as several players are reporting that, after two weeks, their discoveries get erased from the game. After playing for a little over two weeks, one Reddit user decided to return to the system he started the game from. After many hours of travel, he finally made it back to where his journey had begun only to discover that all of the planet locations, plants, and animals he named were reset. He travelled to some of the neighbouring star systems and found that all of the names he created were wiped, too. His planet and star system names were still intact, but everything else was wiped from existence. People who replied to the original Reddit thread have confirmed that their discoveries have been wiped as well, meaning that this is not an isolated incident. Some in the comments believe that keeping a database of names eats up a lot of memory, even if it is just text data. Because of that, names have to be wiped after a period of time. Though planets and solar system names aren’t erased, it still stings to know that everything else you bothered to carefully name will be erased after two weeks. This sort of defeats the purpose of even bothering to come up with a clever name for plants and animals. I understand that Hello Games doesn’t want to overload their servers with this sort of stuff, but it is something that could have made clear to players beforehand. The bad news just keeps on piling up for No Man’s Sky, it seems.

Jimboxy
I've not played this, but it seems from the outside to be getting an unfairly harsh deal from the press. Aren't Hello Games like a tiny two person team or something?
Duck
Yeah, I kinda feel bad for Hello games. I think they had just 14 people working on it. Which is clearly not enough for an idea/game that big. Then other teams with more resources and people take their idea and blow it out the water.. *from about 6:50 on wards.
Craymen Edge
I haven't played it (decided it wasn't for me as soon as heard what the core gameplay was going to be), but I think most of the criticism in reviews has sounded fair. Nobody has really bashed it. Also I think team size only gives you so much clemency - especially when you're charging the same as every other big budget game, and have a company the size of Sony marketing the game to 10's of millions of people for you globally. 16 minutes ago, Duck said: Then other teams with more resources and people take their idea and blow it out the water.. I mean, Chris Roberts has been making space games since the late 80's.

DisturbedSwan
http://indianexpress.com/article/technology/gaming/no-mans-sky-refunds-being-offered-by-steam-amazon-us-and-sony-3000253/ Quote No Man’s Sky players are now being offered refunds by Steam, even if you have playtime on the game. The game has faced a lot of criticism since its launch on August 8, with many gamers realising that the game isn’t what was promised to them. A lot of gamers ended up pre-ordering the game due to the hype around it, but soon realised that it was different than what they expected. The result? Steam now has thousands of users requesting refunds. The game has received mixed reviews on Steam’s website, with the top review giving the game a ‘Not Recommended’ tag that has been agreed upon by more than 7,000 people. Most of the remaining reviews for the game also carry the ‘Not Recommended’ mark. Many users on Reddit have shared successful refund stories with the game, even after they have played the game. People who have ordered the game from Sony and Amazon US are also receiving refunds for the game, according to an NDTV report. A report by Gamer Revolution has said that No Man’s Sky has already lost 85 per cent of its users since its launch. No Man’s Sky promises a user unlimited space exploration, with a possibility to find over 18 quintillion planets. The ever expanding game is not an action packed one, doesn’t have a multiplayer mode or even a set of goals/ defined storyline. Many users have been left disappointed because the game is repetitive, and exploring planet-after-planet does not yield any particular achievements. The game is designed for people who do not want set rules to define their gameplay, and can really enjoy an open world game. If you want your game progress to be fast, this game is not for you. Users playing the game have also reportedly been facing a lot of troubles with the game. The games developer, Hello Games, had recently announced that they were going to hire a quality assurance team to address the most critical issues with the game. Nothing wrong with posting it, but when an author is opening displeased with a game writing an article about how other people are displeased with a game, it smacks slightly of bias fulfilment. To be honest, this just makes me want to play it more. Hopefully it'll be cheap soon...

Anyway, the PC does have some specific issues above and beyond what the PS4 version had, so I understand the refund extension to an extent. It's not anywhere near Arkham Knight PC levels of broken though. As I understand it, it won't even launch if I bought it for my PC because of a processor instruction set requirement that isn't mentioned in the recommended specs. DisturbedSwan
I'm not angry or entitled about anything, particularly NMS, all I was trying to do is share the news that if you own the game on Steam you can get a refund if you wish, I think that's newsworthy myself. Unfortunately, I picked a particularly vitriolic article that was needlessly subjective and for that I apologise profusely and have corrected it. I won't bother next time, all the grief I get for attempting to post a news story, not worth the effort.

The popularity of that kind of format coupled with nms has created a perfect storm of shouting ass holes. But developers need to take more care and have more honesty when marketing their games though. I understand that they have to promote and get noticed. But showing amazing graphics, promising cool features and then having to downgrade or cut big things because they need to meet a window or don't have the resources is going to piss people off. While I'm not naive enough to think that people would all react better, I do think honesty would soften the reaction. If you can't add something then releasing a tweet apologising before people get too upset about it will illicit some sympathy, especially for a team the size of Hello Games The problem in this particular case is that they were still hinting and saying stuff would be in they must have known wouldn't be. Which is a shame because for whatever No Man's Sky is it will now always be remembered for what it's not

Hendo
As someone who was following development and has played the game (in fact I'm playing it right now), I think it does deserve the mud slung at it. Tons of features were either straight up lied about existing or made out to be bigger than they are. Multiplayer, destructible environments, a valid end goal, creatures that react with each other and the environment. Not to mention the extreme graphical downgrade. I like it, but this is not at all the game that it was pushed as. This is a mid-price indie survival game on Steam that got picked up by Sony and the small team got way out of their depth. I love you, Mark, but the criticisms are more than valid.
Sambob
I really liked the thoery of the game but have to agree with Hendo's comment about it being a mid priced indie survival game, its so like other games ive seen but just space themed. Had it have actually been released on steam and been mid priced then it would probably be talked about as one of the most legendary understated games for a long time, it just goes to show that whilst we normally talk about making a great game and it talking for itself, the pitching of a game is very important. I enjoyed what i played of No Man's sky, but it was overpriced and over promised and ive made the most of GAME doing double trade in today and got 38 quid back and picked up GTA 5, and i feel pretty happy with 50 quid getting me a bit of time with no mans sky and then GTA 5.
