Sony Consoles and Updates

Bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing this one.

So if we go back 12 months xbox one was going to be cloud based gaming, always online, share games with friends, no trade in's available. We all boo'ed and claimed we are not getting an xbox one, so ms did a quick turnaround.

So now in 2014 sony are launching a cloud based gaming system, always online,no trade in's difference being its modelled on a rental service like lovefilm? unless ive got it wrong?

I can see where this is going, and hats off to sony as they have been very sly with this. The PS5 will kill off media as disc's etc and tbh i see i just being the size of those now tv boxes that people have at home with just an ethernet port and a couple of usb's no the gamepads to charge and synch with. We will no longer own games to lend to friends and perhaps this will be the end of our consoles under the tele.

Im not sure we will see that many ps4 titles on the ps:now, unless they can only be streamed to the ps4. How annoyed would ps4 owners be knowing that ps3 owners are playing ps4 games on there ps3? it would cause a massive backlash.

Anyway, my ramblings over.

One last thing, i can see this being a two tiered system, ie latest games you pay full whack for £50 etc...and the rental streamed games being at least 2-3 years old maybe newer if they use the ps plus model for getting games free to the console.

I'm not saying your nightmarish dystopia won't happen, but I'm not sure it's as cynical as you've put it.

We'll see how this generation goes but if it's 5 years long I think the next PlayStation (my phone added the capitalisation there) will still have a disc drive

The biggest difference is that Playstation Now as it currently stands, is another option for playing games. With the original plan for Xbox One, it was the only option. People pretty emphatically said 'no, thanks'.

It might be that console gaming goes that way eventually anyway, if and when hardware and networks are up to it.

My opinion has always been: if I'm expected to give up control of when and how I can access and play games, I require a large increase in convenience, and a hefty decrease in price. Otherwise I'll go elsewhere.

I was happy enough to pay up to £10-ish for decent games on XBLA while I was using the 360 a lot, and Steam has been really convenient (and extremely cheap) for a while now.

Being cynical of Sony isn't allowed, they're the golden boy right now and are above being criticised. ;)

Now for the serious part of the post. Sony are here to make money and they're going to look at ways at doing this. Case in point. They removed the back compatibility of the PS3. They removed the cost of adding this hardware to the system and told the folks responsible for the PS2 games people wanted to make HD versions. They spent a little money to redux games and then sold them, essentially money for old rope.

Moving on to PSN+. All those games you got for 'free' are paid for. Not just once off like those reduxes I mentioned earlier, but every single month. It's a good deal towards gamers, but it wouldn't exist if it wasn't making Sony a cut.

That brings us to the PS4. No back compatibility, but we can let you subscribe to let you play all the games you've already owned on previous system for a monthly fee. You can play on any of these systems too, because it's all in the cloud. Don't worry though, we won't be streaming PS4 titles yet, as we've got a warehouse and workforce churning those fuckers out at a rate of knots and we'd like to sell you one of those to sit under your PlayStation Now compatible TV. Maybe when the PS5 comes out we'll neglect to put BC in that so we can sell you something else that will give us a monthly sustained income.

It's all about tying you into an ecosystem that makes you pay monthly for a service. Not only are they getting a cut from every console, peripheral and game they sell, but they're also taking a cut from any services you use. While you might only buy a console once every few years and maybe several games per year, you will pay into services 12 times a year. I'm almost certain that they'll take a bigger profit after investment with these services than they do with the actual physical stuff.

Wow cool, been meaning to get Bioshock Infinite a while, so if I pony up the 40 quid, I can download as many as I like and keep them until I stop paying?

Do they self delete?

Can I pay up again to play them in future?

Smart marketing, very clever. Leads me to a PS4 rather than X0 for sure.

really? I thought they added to your account you just couldn't redownload them/activate them to play

That said I've not dropped ps+ yet. Has anyone on here (so we can get a proper answer)?

edit: from sony's faq

Will I get access to my PlayStation Plus games if I renew my subscription after it has lapsed?

Yes, upon renewal of your subscription you will get access to your PlayStation Plus games. We recommend you take advantage of automatic renewal to ensure you don't miss out.

Dynasty Warriors Next is a great freebie. I've not played every DW game, as there's 13000 of them, but it's a series I dip into every now and then. DW Next i played a fair bit of on release, thought it's pretty good.

Not let my Plus sub run out since it started, you get ridiculous value for money, across 3 formats, that makes me happy to keep going.
