Sony Consoles and Updates

From speaking to parents, because that's the age I'm at, some of them bought the disc free PS5 because it was cheaper and available, and didn't give a thought to what that might mean.

If their kid just plays Fortnite and stuff then it's moot anyway.

Granted that doesn't explain anyone buying a Pro, but today of all days has been another reminder that people do stupid self-harming shit

Given the death of the high street video game shops and declined of other retailers selling physical copies it's no surprise if those with only a third party interest in buying a console (i.e. on behalf of someone else) will go for a digital download only option, as they'll be led to believe its the 'future'

To be fair the disc drive has been out of stock basically since the Pro was announced as not having one. I remember posting about it in despair as it showed how much interest a £800 console has. However, I don’t think Sony are going to be in a rush to restock them for the exact reasons you’re saying.

There's a lot of stores doing 40 GBP discounts on the Pro. Not a massive cut or anything but maybe it makes it more tempting for people. I know black friday is coming up but it doesn't sound like this thing is selling through amazingly, but maybe the pandemic fucked my perspective up when it comes to obtainability of gaming hardware, so maybe this is actually totally normal and good.

Having seeing and read lots of impressions I have near 0 interest in getting one, even for Rebirth.

The only thing that the PS5 Pro is making me think about is how much the PS6 will be... will it be cheaper cos I really can't see how it could be.

Sony apparently (I don't know this, I'm repeating what I heard) aren't willing to hit the same margin on the Pro. On a base console they can make their money back on the games, but with the Pro they're selling to people who already have a PS5, so have to sell it at a profit

The bigger thing for me is they'll have to either stop producing the Pro, or tank it's price before PS6 comes out, otherwise the 6 just stop sales of the Pro and the Pro looks like they were ripping people off. Or alternatively, they have to price it above the Pro

Yeah... that first paragraph makes a lot of sense... and to be fair so does the second.😂

It'll be interesting to see how much of a jump forwards the PS6 is in terms of technology to pricing... I think they're going to have to be very careful there.

What is the next wave of visual delights (TVs) that future tech will bring - as each successive console generation for the last few cycles has somewhat been guided by that: HD, 720, 1080, 4k etc, so is it 8/10k or is there going to be something else (e.g. like from CDRom to BluRay, to HD Installation to SSD)?

I wonder how far off we are from integrated AI (where a game dynamically changes quality & content over time, rather than needing patching) or if glasses free 3D or holographic projection is still a feasible concept.

I recall reading this a few years ago (story dated 2014) using 3D holographic projection to potentially show the 2022 World Cup, but aside from the Abba Voyage show (haven't been) I haven't really heard of it being used anywhere (or any home adaptation).
