Snaggletooth Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 "ATOMFALL GAMESCOM 2024 TRAILER - A nuclear disaster has left an area of Britain in tatters. Atomfall, a new survival-action game, will see you explore, scavenge, craft, barter and fight your way through beautifully recreated scenery in search of answers. A single player, survival-action game, Atomfall blends post-war Britain with Cold War paranoia, folk horror, and elements of classic British sci-fi like Day of the Triffids, Doctor Who and The Prisoner, to create an immersive and thrilling gameplay experience. Set in the rolling British countryside with idyllic pubs, quaint villages, and red phone boxes it soon becomes clear that things are far from normal. Created by Rebellion, the makers of the much-loved Sniper Elite and Zombie Army franchises, Atomfall is inspired by a real-world nuclear disaster that occurred in northern England in 1957. The game follows a fictional storyline where you find yourself in the quarantine zone five years after the event. Everything has changed in that time, and you find yourself in a very different Britain, on the wrong side of the quarantine wall. The area is run by the military and beset with factions, in-fighting, and a growing sense of fear. It’s up you to unravel the mystery of what happened. Explore the countryside, villages, and settlements and meet odd people, wicked cults, rogue government agencies and others along the way. Explore this open world adventure and seek out the truth at your own pace. " Really like the look of this, certainly has some Fallout vibes, but an open zone game as opposed to open world. Loving the vibe of it.
DANGERMAN Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 Yeah, this looked great when it was revealed earlier in the year. Hopefully it isn't one of those things that looks great until you see how it plays Also, if anything, it's a little too northern. @HandsomeDeaddoesn't sound like that
Nag Posted January 13 Posted January 13 This is one of those games that could go either way... I picked it for Fantasy Critic though so obviously I'm hoping it's great.
Nag Posted March 21 Posted March 21 Sitting at around 75 on Metacritic... seems like it's producing some contradictory reviews from places, which is kind've what I was expecting.
Maf Posted March 22 Posted March 22 Not to be a hater but this game looks so tired already. I saw a review or something saying it’s not as open as Fallout and if not smaller, actually more linear. Which maybe is a +. But between Fallout, Metro or even just these first person WRPg’s in general where you run around areas, talking to people, trying to do quests etc. This whole fucking thing needs a shake up and this game just kind of looks like another one It’s on Gamepass though so I will give it a try. Maybe something about it will be surprising EDIT: Maybe this isn’t effective at getting my point across but I don’t want to play a game and be in this position ever again
Nag Posted March 22 Posted March 22 Apparently there's a lot of talking... so you won't have a clue what's happening after the first 4 minutes. 😉 1
Maf Posted March 22 Posted March 22 Talking in games should be banned. Story should be done with body language only. Like head shakes and foot taps. It’s video games, how much more do you need

shinymcshine Posted March 22 Posted March 22 Why does it feel that since the peak of Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fable 2, and later Fallout 4 and Witcher 3 - the whole ability to create an open world RPG has taken a somewhat backwards step (at worst) or just stagnated (at best) ? I'll no doubt give it a go on GP, and with expectations already managed, I might well enjoy it - but it's really annoying that it's a genre of gaming where then newer generations haven't particularly taken anything to the next level of gaming experience.
one-armed dwarf Posted March 22 Posted March 22 I would probably ask if you guys played Cyberpunk tbh. I mean it's got issues and all but it's probably the best modern FP Fallout style RPG out there now, especially with the expansion. Its a standard setter for immersive storytelling as well, if weak on role playing possibilities compared with stuff like New Vegas 1
shinymcshine Posted March 22 Posted March 22 I did muse on Cyberpunk but it did launch almost 4.5 yrs ago somewhat disastrously, and whilst significant efforts were made to patch it, and an extensive standalone DLC - it maybe highlights the problems devs have in making games in the genre. Must get around to playing them one day.. Even KC:D is pretty rough and doesn't do much new compared to those games from 10-15 yrs ago, and Starfield, well.....
Maf Posted March 22 Posted March 22 I tried Cyberpunk twice and ditched it both times after the tutorial. The same reasons that put me off this game was true for Cyberpunk. Just kinda been there, done that. I also just dislike Cyberpunk’s style as well. Although I’m kind of done all the genres these games play in. I’m tired of post apocalypse, I’m tired of swords and sorcery, I’m tired of Fallout. These games just aren’t different enough. Even when they change the scenery it still always feels like the same points and objectives
