Sony Consoles and Updates

These reports were from owners on ResetEra who experienced these issues for themselves shortly after launch, I know these issues were magnified because of everyone getting this new console at the same time but yeah, it doesn’t mean that they don’t exist or were exaggerated. I honestly don’t know if things have been shored up since then, there have been a few firmware updates but I’m not sure they’ve directly addressed any of these potential issues.

Just because we’ve all been lucky on here so far doesn’t mean other people haven’t had issues with at launch up to present day.

I will say this again, but, just because I’m warning you of these things it doesn’t mean they’ll happen to you. It means it may put your system at greater risk of a potential issue, personally I’d rather avoid that until a firmware updates solves them but you do you etc. It’s your console, you can do what you like with it.

For my own peace of mind I’d rather put the warnings out there and folks don’t have issues than stay quiet and someone has a problem. Listen to them or not, it’s your call at the end of the day.

  • 2 weeks later...

It’s been just over two months since launch, the firmware updates will come.

The PS4 dash in January 2014 was probably similarly bare bones as the PS5 is right now.

That being said, you can see what people are playing in your friends list, I too would like them to add back in the feature where you saw what trophies etc. Folks have picked up though, and an LFG/Community feature wouldn’t go amiss either. But yeah, neither are priorities in the scheme of things at the moment, things may take longer to roll out because of the Pandemic.

I want to be able to hold the PS button to have the option to power off etc. like the PS4 does. Instead of having to scroll all the way to the right and press multiple buttons.

Be nice if I could customise and choose what appeared on the bar which appears when I press the PS button too so I can easily access trophies - was a right pain when I was finishing Bugsnax and Astro. I know you can customise it at the moment but only with very limited options.

Apparently a Deals section has been added the past couple of days but I’m yet to explore yet. @DANGERMAN

Other things will get added in time. It’s extraordinary times at the moment.

Aside from the features I mentioned in my previous post and maybe customisable backgrounds I’ve not got any grievances with the dash really, it’s still a bit bare bones but it’s been 2 months since launch and I still think it’s excellent overall. I’m a patient guy, I can wait, more features will come.

Sure things will get added & yea it’s only been 2 months... but in a way it hasn’t just been 2 months. They did all the R&D through the PS3 and PS4 era’s. So it’s been years. They knew what worked (such as holding the PS button for power functions) and where it made logical sense to put options and allow customisation. So why have they gone backwards?

You basically admit as much here. It was barebones, they fixed it and now gone back to bare bones again. The dash isn’t such a change whereby it must have been difficult to keep those features.

Exactly this-

features are missing in the first place, there's no real reason to rollback on functionality.

Don’t know why but when companies ‘update’ stuff they always feel the need to make you have to do more button presses and go though more menus for the same options which uses to be only 1 or 2 presses away. It’s really annoying and backwards.

Saying all this I think the new UI is visually nice and easy enough to use. But when we can highlight simple issues easily in the first couple of weeks of use why didn’t they while testing? Just irritating more than anything.

All true, been in R&D for years for sure. I think the holding/non-holding of the PS button is just something we’ll all get used to in time though, it was a choice just like them changing the ‘accept’ button to X in Japan when it has been O since PS’ inception.

They’re starting from scratch again with PS5, it’s a whole new console so they start from 1.0, PS4 has had updates added for over 7 years at this point. You can’t expect them to have 7 years worth of PS5 updates available in 2 months for PS5, it’s not realistic.

I think it likely didn’t have much testing outside of internal R&D centres because of the Pandemic. Most of these issues will be solved in time, we’re in extraordinary circumstances at the moment where most workplaces are still working from home or with a socially distanced staff, things will roll out a little slower than they otherwise would do. I do stress again, it has been 2 months, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

I’ve got things I want to see added but I don’t have any issues with the UI, it’s clean, quick and simple which is the best kind of UI for me, it’s why I love the Switch UI. A UI falls down when it is needlessly cumbersome and complicated for me, so I’ll take bare bones over the confusing mess of other UIs I’ve experienced over the years.

I actually think you might like Returnal @OCH as its got Roguelike elements to it and I remember you loving Binding of Isaac, not out until April though. Once Hades comes to PS that would be a very ‘you’ game as well.

Thanks, but I mentioned elsewhere. I can't even watch Hades, let alone play it. Just watching it on YouTube gave me headaches and made my eyes water like crazy.

Nobody is expecting 7 years worth of updates in 2 months... but then again we shouldn't be expecting whole parts of a UI to be missing either

This. The new UI isn’t even that different so it’s not exactly a great excuse for them to have removed functionality and QOL improvements made previously. Surely when building the new interface you do it with these improvements in mind. Not like theyre starting from scratch. They sorted all this on the PS4 so why go backwards?

Again. It’s not bad, still think I prefer it to Xbox UI, but it just baffles me why they’ve gone backwards so much & is how stupid some of the decisions seem to have been.

No, but some of these platforms (the eShop as well) default to French as I'm living in Luxembourg. For some reason companies believe it's the official language here. Native language would be Luxembourgish, which is basically a mutated version of German.
