PC Handhelds - ROG Ally, SteamDeck etc.

Anyone got one? Are they a pain to use for someone who isn’t very computer literate?

I was thinking of getting a Steam deck OLED at some point but these (the extreme model) are available for basically the same - £500 - at the moment. Heard they’re a lot more powerful and I can have Game Pass on it which is huge compared the the Deck. But having a look about it sounds like Windows on handheld isn’t great? Any experience on here? Also how’s the pad actually feel - the D pad, buttons etc.

Thanks for nothing haha.

Decided against it in end. Done a lot more research and the SD OLED still seems to be the better choice for me personally even without Gamepass availability. Plus I can’t afford it at minute, but was going to worry about that later with it being £100 off.

Thinking I might just wait out until one of these devices has the simplicity of SD but with slightly more power and Gamepass - potentially from Xbox themselves hopefully subsidised to be a bit cheaper. Or wait until Windows gets a handheld mode like they’ve been threatening then get the ROG or something.

Cloud Game Pass is doable on Steam Deck, it works fine. MS said they were working on getting GP running on Deck, but that was ages ago, so who knows. I know they've said they want it on everything, but maybe not if they're about to launch their own handheld at the end of the year

Nah, don’t want to use cloud thanks. Tried it before and any slight stutters, input lag or when the picture goes all pixelated it just pisses me off. Not all GP games are on cloud either.

Just been reminded why getting a SD without GP would piss me off too. Another Crabs Treasure is on GP today and on Steam it’s £25. I’d be so annoyed not having access to that as it’d be perfect for a quick go right now if I had one. So talked myself back into a ROG even with the issues if a better one isn’t released in the near future.

  • mfnick changed the title to PC Handhelds - ROG Ally, SteamDeck etc.

It's the iOS vs Android thing again, isn't it? A properly curated device with a custom-tailored OS vs. something more open but less plug & play. Probably easier to install Steam on a Rog than set up a Windows partition on the Deck, but that's just me guessing.

I had thought about a decent mini PC, installing Steam OS, and using that as a docked Steam Deck (absolutely needless, but I'd been thinking about it). Turn on and play, crazy list of games, but aiming for 1080p 60 rather than the Decks specs. I'm not sure how that would work though as the Deck downloads shaders so that you don't get stuttering, but presumably that's because all Steam Deck's are more or less the same, so I'm not sure how that would work if you tried it on a normal PC

I’m really impressed with the Steam Deck so far. Glad I got the OLED version the screen is so nice. I tried taking screenshots of it but honestly there’s so much colour and contrast lost in the picture there’s no point. You have to take my word how nice it looks

The thing that is throwing me is the face buttons are reverse to Switch so I’m hitting the wrong thing all the time. When I jump from Switch to controller I don’t even need to think about it, my brain swaps over automatically. I guess it’s because I’m holding the Deck and looking at a handheld screen my brain isn’t making the jump.

My only 2 things I don’t like so far is it’s really hot and holding it hands get very sweaty. Also it doesn’t download while in sleep mode which is not great. Obviously being na OLED screen I would like to turn the screen off when idle because of burn in and as these are not Switch games they take time to download.

Played a few games on it so far and really enjoyed it, though. This thing is cool. I will look at emulation stuff over the weekend. Hopefully there are some simple to follow YT guides

For heat you probably want to limit framerate and things like that. The pop up menu is really good, I mostly just play stuff at 40 or 48fps, never bother with 60 really. More battery that way

That said I can't say I ever found my LCD deck getting too hot, even when playing stuff like Mass Effect on it. It gets warm at the vent though, which is good for smelling

Whoops how did that happen

Actually with a lot of fucking aggro. The problem with a lot of these tutorials is they skip over things that probably seem really basic but when you need a button by button guide - I really need everything explained

Actually I have this running on desktop mode but not on Steam. I need a rom manager apparently. Anyone know if that’s worth doing or just play in desktop?

EDIT: Figured it out

No one else thinks this is cool? I think this is cool. I know how I’m going to be playing Dragon Quest 8 when I complete some of my current games

Just not sure which version to play. The PS2 or 3DS version

Honestly no, the framing of DS games on steam deck looks too wrong to me

A reason why I very quickly gave up on one of the Castlevania games in that recent collection, it just looks totally wrong the way they laid out the multiple screens on it

It's definitely a lot cooler for games with a standard frame tho, like 4:3 or 16:9/16:10. So I would definitely be playing DQ8 on PS2 emulators

If you press R2 it changes the screen layout to multiple options. Can even have single screen

When I played it I changed it so it was normal DS layout (top and bottom) but it’s only 4:3 ratio, that way

STILL COOL
