I feel I've been making reasonable progress just using the Red Deck so far, so I'll probably stick with it until it feels I'm hitting a block.

I got that 11k score partly due to loading up that Joker that gives you +3 for Skipping Cards (had it up to a x50 something multiplier).

Looks like I'm "only" 9 Jokers and 5 Vouchers away from completing the collection. Looking at them, some seem achievable but just something you wouldn't normally do (discard a royal flush), others look much harder than anything I've done so far (earn 100 million chips in one hand).

I think I will have a go at unlocking as many of them as I can at some point, and maybe some of the challenge modes.

Noooo! I’m so mad!. I was one good hand away from beating the deck

I’ve never had to think so hard about random bullshit before in my life

I had the best Joker of all time earlier. The Seltzer that just makes every card go twice for 10 hands. I should have skipped more fights

I think I might be done with this game. I recognise it’s very good, but I’m just not very good at it. I’ve had 2 ok runs so far and all the others have collapsed around ante 3-5.

It’s also a game that takes a bit too long to get going

Effectively there’s 3 stages to my experience. There’s a very samey start, a confused middle where I’m trying to see what I can make work, then limping along until inevitable failure

A couple of those runs have broken that progression, but even then I never felt like I had a strong deck, I was just getting by

I dunno. And just starting over and over is kind of boring.

It is a very good game, but I’m not good at it. What it wants from the player I’m never going to be very good at. I just can’t do long form strategy of any type.

There’s also too much to think about for me. I got to the first boss on like ante 2 or something. The rule was have to play 5 cards, I was like ok. So I was discarding and changing trying to find a full house, ended up with 4 of a kind which I never get and was like yes play that, then it said it didn’t count because I have to play 5 cards ahh short term memory

This game is amazing at surfacing everything I’m not very good at. Strategy, memory, and piecing things together.

For that specific boss condition, you could have played the 4 card hand and just thrown on a dummy 5th card to meet the condition

I use 'unscored' cards like this often as a 'free' discard, which is where non-flush/heterosexual builds really shine imo

(I mean you probably know that but it's something I didn't clock at first at least)

Also, I forgot to mention I had almost the exact same thing happen to me last night on ante 6 of black stake black deck. Except what it was was it was you could only play the same hand over and over, and I was optimised for 2 pair cause I had the trousers joker but the trousers joker also works with full house cause it 'contains' a 2 pair. So I get to the boss and play a full house cause it showed up, oh fuck now I'm locked into full house and I can't play another hand and a really good run died

I've had that happen a good bit, where I blindly rush into a boss, especially on a good run, and carelessly run into a trap I should have noticed.

There should be a Prince of Persia joker to protect me from this, rewind time

I know it would defeat part of the game. But one thing I’ve got really bored of very quickly is constantly working out what hands I have to play. I think the interesting part of this game is the deck building part, not the working out do I have a flush or not. I kind of wish there was just a button that tells me what hands I have available to me at any given time. And the choice is then playing something or discarding something.

I know people will hate that idea, but I feel it would really speed the game up

I have to take breaks from it because I get bored of it too as I’ve said before. The first 2 antes I find really boring after I’ve been playing for a bit. Starting from zero again (as in every one of these kind of games) really gets to me after a bit. I think it could do with a random starter joker option where you get 2 while skipping the first couple of rounds.

But after a couple of months I do like jumping back in. That’s definitely a positive - just how easy it is to get back into. Don’t have to remember controls, don’t get skill fatigue or anything. Just pick it up again in a month and after a couple of hands I’m basically at the same level I was before.

I think what makes the early antes slightly less boring, imo, is trying to identify jokers that are seemingly not that good but super versatile and could fit multiple builds, or ones which benefit from being activated really early on like Ride the Bus, or the ones which get bonuses from tarots or not using discards.

There's also something to be said about the thinking that goes into maximising the economy early on, where every 5 dollars generates additional interest.

A big part of why the Black Deck is so difficult is it only having 3 hands, but it's not cause you only get to play 3 hands it's cause you get less money each round. Each unplayed hand generating 1 dollar each. At a certain stake as well the small blinds don't give you any money bar the ones you get from interest and unplayed hands so this stuff really starts to matter. So the economy strangles the fuck out of you early on and it's extremely difficult to find the balance here between a good onramp to getting your economy online and a joker which will make it easy to score wins. The balance there also between keeping your power dry and getting a bit of interest which can cascade into more flexibility in decision making

I feel like this is the backbone of the game more than playing hands and even massaging the deck into something which works for you. All that stuff is stuff which builds on this early game stuff. It is really hard tho

I've been tending to build decks to benefit from the Joker multipliers (or chips) and also Planets to up the Hand bonuses - but I haven't really figured out too much benefit from the Tarot cards (as just buffing 1 or 2 from 52 cards feels a little pointless, given the odds of it coming out).

Likewise I still tend to end up with a deck of around 52 cards rather than anything greatly smaller (to sway the odds of certain draws) as the ability to remove cards seems pretty limited (albeit I've done things like change low value cards into Face cards etc occasionally).

So I can build a really good deck at times but it can still fall down with a few poor draws - where low value cards don't stack up against high multipliers - so I guess it's all about hitting that sweet spot balance ?

I had a really good run which used the hanging chad to execute Lucky jokers 3 times if they were at the start of a hand. Fucked up on curating the deck tho to benefit the fibbonacci gods and ended up unable to go beyond ante 5.

Tarot is huge with the right Joker synergies, especially if you have an economy that lets you reroll again and again. Purple seals are nuts but I really should have picked up the booster pack joker, looking back on it, so then I could have curated the deck with all the bonus tarots from the packs I was opening with all my lucky cash. Lessons learned

@shinymcshine so funny enough the thing that won for me was a deck of 30 spade cards, a joker that gave +3 mult for every spade scored, a joker that gave +15 mult if had no discards left (made it good for just discarding any non-spade), a joker that gained x0.01 multiplier for each planet card used (got it up to 3x) and those planet cards levelled up my flush and straight flush to +7

So the game plan was to just discard any non-spade as fast as possible to get flush/straight flush and get rewarded for it. It’s why on the win screen it says I only played flush 12 times because 1 flush hand was over 50k points and beat most rounds with 1 hand

So to come back to your question of weighting the deck for the right suite was by using booster packs and arcane packs. Booster was just adding more spades, arcane was deleting non-spade, duplicating spades and the best card that lets you turn any 3 cards in to spades. Basically trying to push for anything that adds, deletes, changes or duplicates. If lucky enough for tarot cards to,appear they can shift/weight the deck in a direction really heavily.

One thing I cannot get rolling with at all is the 8 ball. I've been trying to prepare decks for it and just clone 8s (and 9s) and upgrade 7s whenever possible in case I get one but that 1/4 chance to produce a tarot feels more like 1/40

Maybe hanging chad would synergise really well here also
