The divisiveness of TLJ strikes again...

Personally, I think the dude is seriously talented and can't wait to see what he comes up with when he's got free reign over an entire trilogy and all new worlds, characters etc. in the SW pantheon.

He's made 1 good film. ? Brick, which is a favourite of mine but he had a budget of about 40p to make that.. I've watched about an hour of The Last Jedi and had to stop as it was too much.

I like Rian Johnson a lot but after trying to watch TLJ three times at home I’ve come to the conclusion that it isn’t very good. As for SOLO, I’ll go and see it, but I’m pretty indifferent. Glad that the general consensus is that it is good.

He made Looper which I like. Haven’t seen Brick.

My criticism of TLJ is that it has plot points that go nowhere, disrespects how characters would act (ask Mark Hamill about what he thinks), the Casino planet, throws away characters’ back stories with a wave of the hand, tries very hard to be funny and fails at every turn.

And that’s all before we get to the Mary Poppins in space moment, which is the point where I had to stop myself from standing up in the cinema, shouting, “oh fuck off!” and walking out.

So yeah, it’s fucking terrible.

Watched Solo in the cinema last night. It’s shit, easily the worst Star Wars film I’ve seen, although it doesn’t feel like a Star Wars movie at all.

One of the most unenjoyable and worst directed films I’ve seen in recent memory. Laughably bad at times. So few of the jokes are funny that when you do smile it just brings into focus how shit the film is. And the scenes that are supposed to have gravitas made me laugh more than the jokes.

Edited like it was made by someone with ADHD (no offense to any forumers who do have ADHD...), the amount of cuts during the action scenes made it borderline unwatchable. And for a series that is famous for its music the music is really annoying (as typified by the end credits, compare the relentless banging music that plays at the end of Solo to the beautiful theme that plays at the end of Jurassic World). And I haven’t even mentioned how dark the movie is.

Hated it.

4/10

STAR WARS: EPISODE IX CAST ANNOUNCED

Quote

RETURNING AND NEW CAST MEMBERS WILL JOIN TOGETHER FOR THE FINAL INSTALLMENT OF THE SKYWALKER SAGA.

Star Wars: Episode IX will begin filming at London’s Pinewood Studios on August 1, 2018. J.J. Abrams returns to direct the final installment of the Skywalker saga. Abrams co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Terrio.

Returning cast members include Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd. Joining the cast of Episode IX are Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant, who will be joined by veteran Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian.

The role of Leia Organa will once again be played by Carrie Fisher, using previously unreleased footage shot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. “We desperately loved Carrie Fisher,” says Abrams. “Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.”

Composer John Williams, who has scored every chapter in the Star Wars saga since 1977’s A New Hope, will return to a galaxy far, far away with Episode IX.

Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Michelle Rejwan, and executive produced by Callum Greene and Jason McGatlin. The crew includes Dan Mindel (Director of Photography), Rick Carter and Kevin Jenkins (Co-Production Designers), Michael Kaplan (Costume Designer), Neal Scanlan (Creature and Droid FX), Maryann Brandon and Stefan Grube (Editors), Roger Guyett (VFX Supervisor), Tommy Gormley (1st AD), and Victoria Mahoney (2nd Unit Director).

Release is scheduled for December 2019.

Honestly, all of that makes me happy. I have a feeling they'll end up doing something similar with the Leia stuff to what they did with Paul Walker for Fast 7.

I'm just glad Benicio Del Toro isn't gonna be in this one.

It's the fact that Richard E. Grant is going to be in the next one that's really jarring for me right now.

I know Star Wars has had more well-known actors in recent years, but it's just weird seeing one in the mainline series.

Edit: Ignore the fuck outta me. I just remembered the prequels. Samuel L. Jackson, Ewan MacGregor and Liam Neeson...

Dude. Peter Cushing and Alec Guinness were in A New Hope.

The casting announcement actually pleased me quite a bit, I love that Billy Dee Williams is back as Lando - even though he's very old I'm sure he'll still demand a presence on screen. The Richard E. Grant casting is a bit out of left field but I don't think it's anything to be worried about, he is a fine actor and I'm sure he won't have a huge role in the film, just a minor Sergeant etc. serving under Hux in the First Order.

The big question I have is whether the TLJ haters are gonna even bother turning up to see IX? I know there's a different director and writing team this time around which should in theory wield more conservative results on screen more akin to TFA but there were plenty who thought that was too tight to the ANH mould.

Personally I loved TFA and TLJ in very different ways. TFA is a throw back to ANH whilst still maintaining that SW magic of the OT whilst TLJ was a very different SW film than anyone had experienced before and some just weren't ready to see.

JJ has a hell of a job on his hands, go too conservative and some folks won't be happy, go left field like Rian Johnson and the TLJ haters won't be happy and deride IX across the internet for weeks/months/years abusing some of the actresses on Social Media in the process. I have faith in JJ to bring it home, deep down I'm expecting a slightly different RotJ but we'll see.

I'm not as positive about it.  JJ is good at starting things but not the best at ending them.

The best stuff is always Rey and Kylo in these films so I think they'll still get that right and hopefully end their arc satisfyingly, but it's the other stuff I'm a little concerned about.

I'm not gonna think about it though because I wonder if one of the reasons I enjoyed TLJ is because I never spent any time after TFA trying to second guess it.  Actually, the only prediction I made was thinking Snoke was actually gonna be three feet tall.  I was a little disappointed at that.  I'm gonna pitch it to those dudes doing the crowd-funded remake that will definitely happen.
