Nintendo will shutdown Wi-Fi service for the DS and Wii May 20 2014.

As of May 20, 2014, certain online functionality offered through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection will no longer be accessible. The discontinued services include online play, matchmaking and leaderboards for many Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games. For a comprehensive list of games and services that are affected, please check http://support.nintendo.com/servicesupdate. Users can still play the games in offline mode, which continues to offer a rich game-play experience.

Online play for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games will be unaffected (aside from the Wii mode on Wii U and Nintendo DS games on Nintendo 3DS family systems). Other online functionality, such as access to the Wii Shop Channel, the Nintendo DSi Shop and video-on-demand services, are also not affected at this time.

We at Nintendo sincerely thank our fans for their continued support of our company’s legacy systems. Your enthusiasm for games made for these systems speaks to their longevity, and the passion of Nintendo fans.

I was going to suggest we do some sort of farewell online thing, but 1. I don't think most of the DS games would work on a modern router 2. I think I have about 2 of those games

Mario kart :(

Still have the odd blast on this with my brother and a few mates, will be missed as im the only one who upgraded to 3ds, sad day but knew it was coming.

I do have to turn my virgin super router thing off and plug in a belkin to use my ds but other than that it worked great.

It'll still work if you're in the same room I think, won't it?

Nintendo demo Mario vs. Donkey Kong for Wii U using Nintendo Web Framework, which is based on Webkit technologies. It will be interesting to see what comes of Nintendo Web Framework. It theoretically can be used to develop browser based games.

At GDC, there is a tech demo from Nintendo Software Technology of Mario vs. Donkey Kong for Wii U using Nintendo Web Framework. I had a chance to try it out very briefly and the controls are on the Wii U GamePad. You can build bridges by drawing a line at the red squares or get rid of bridge a by tapping on them.

The Nintendo Web Framework is a development environment based on WebKit technologies, supporting software development on the Wii U using HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS. It has support for the Wii U GamePad, Wii Remote, and even JavaScript extensions such as video playback. Its goal is to allow easy porting of apps to Wii U using Web technologies.

You can see a couple of quick photographs of the setup that we snapped below. One of them includes the game code running on a monitor, visible for all to see. Nintendo’s Damon Baker shared with us that the tech demo is simply meant to be that, and is not planned to be an actual game.
