A Song A Day

I'm sure float on was on a bank advert or something at one point, it always reminds me of them. Dashboard was the first song I heard from then knowing who they are, I heard it on RB2 and saw they did Float On too. Good choice.

Surprised this has gone nearly a week without a post.

I've not really listened to Beck a whole lot, the only album of I've owned is Mellow Gold. I thought this one was a little flat and pedestrian.

Beth Gibbons & Rustin Mann - Tom the Model

Another "last album I listened to" selection.

really liked the start, less once it gets going. Not sure the melody really punches enough. It does sound very 60's though which kind of clicked more once the full backing comes in. Not bad, just not what I thought after the first few bars.

on a similar theme

It rumbles along quite nicely, captures the theme of the subject matter well but it's one of those songs that sounds better in conjuction of other songs. Very much an album track if you will.

Time to kill the thread again? I really like that Beck song, probably my favourite.

Really liked that, I can tell they're influenced by Bruce Springsteen.

You've probably heard this one on the radio. This is a live version. And why did no-one inform me that she's a honey?

Sad to say I really didnt enjoy that. It was boring, felt like it was written on a flow chart. Also she was doing that thing with her voice a lot of female vocalists do at the minute, I think Beyonce started it, and she probably got it off some singer from the 60's.

Bah, was all set to post a song and embedding has been disabled on it. Will pick one at work

dont think I've picked this before?

Quite liked that, the nasally vocals and slightly trippy lyrics reminded me a bit of They Might Be Giants. If they'd been formed by Johnny Cash and Syd Barrett.

Also, is it bad that I can't hear a cello now without thinking of Braid?

This is off the Manics' new album, thought I'd fire it up cos I'm going to see them tomorrow. Squeee!

First of all, enjoy the gig, but the things is with the Manics is they've never done a lot for me, I'm a bit indifferent to them and my feeling towards that song are also indifferent. If someone put it on in the pub while I'm playing pool I may have a wee nod to it but that's about it.

Two things ruin Gravel Pit - The chorus and U-God (verse 3). Otherwise its a good track, opens with Meth who is pretty much always awesome and follows with Ghost who is also pretty much always awesome.

Sorry to follow hip-hop with hip-hop but thats the way it is.

I like Gravel Pit. It's not their best maybe, but I find it funny, and it ends with an attack by ninjas as if that's just the most natural, logical thing in the world

Madvillain - All Caps

Liked the video to that a lot, but didn't like his style so much. I was starting to warm to it by the end, though. It could be a grower.

Serj Tankian - Empty Walls

When I went to buy Serj's new album on Amazon the other day, I noticed Elect the Dead Symphony listed on there too, so I downloaded both. This is rather great.

Not entirely sure what I make of that. At certain points it works quite well, but I'm not sure it entirely fits live. As for the song, it's not the best he's ever done, SOTD have a habit of putting something awful in an otherwise good somg, usually it's letting the guitarist sing. this doesnt really have that, but it also didnt get me singing along like some of his/their other stuff does

Sorry, Spat. But I have an intolerance to kids choirs, they take the inherent anxiety and passion of a song and fuck it up with clinically clean vocals.

Contrary to DC I thought it was ace! Feels more sombre than the original and I love the dark harmonies.

A little from column A, a little from column B. Some of that sounded quite haunting and beautiful, but I prefer the rawness of the original - guitars beat piano this time.

Also, every time they sang "What the hell am I doing here?" it made me grind my teeth. It was too clean and over-pronounced, lacked any emotion, and the timing of it was completely wrong.

Agreed, I like the sound of it but it's so contrived and clinical. I mean obviously they're kids so they aren't likely to have been through all that much, but they dont sound like they have either, it sounds fake, which makes it a very boring flat song

DC, I liked it, but I think that would be better just as an instrumental for some reason.

OK, we got an odd one here. I don't think anyone has done this before. It's the opening credits from a show my old lady watches. It's a costume drama about shipping lines and the empire that is created from it. I fucking hate it. However, this is the theme tune that bookends the mediocrity.
