Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

the thing with the Activision and Bethesda games, those companies previously would have made X million $ a year. If you keep those games on Xbox, and completely ignore the 2 market leading consoles (1 because it isn't powerful enough and isn't really the market you're after, the other because it's your rival) then you need it to lead to a spike in market share for you. A loss-leading year or so, maybe, the odd game you take the hit on (Starfield for example), fine, but at a certain point you've completely devalued your acquisition

Even before you factor in whatever hit they take on Game Pass, I think there were always going to happen, just not in the way it eventually has done

Been seeing some favourable previews for this today... mind you I've seen that before and then the actual reviews proceed to rip the game in question to pieces so who knows how this'll turn out.

Keeping my fingers crossed for this though... Microsoft could do with a win tbf.

I just find out through listening to DF's podcast that this is actually a relatively slow-paced methodical 'action adventure' type with very slight immersive sim elements and open areas to explore and tackle objectives in your own rhythm. Not really what I was expecting to be honest, I thought this was going to be something like classic Tomb Raider in structure, only in first person.

Sounds interesting, but I'm not sure if I'll be on board day one. The price I'm willing to pay for this is directly linked to the amount of code Microsoft is wiling to press on the disc.

I actually thought about this as well recently, the IP itself is probably the least enticing thing about this project for me. IIRC the last movie didn't do particularly well, and I wonder if that's the fault of Crystal Skull or if people today just simply don't care about Indy anymore. Though whenever I hear people from the industry that are around my age or slightly older (like the DF crew for example) talk about this they're all super excited by the prospect.

Crystal Skull came out 16 years ago so it's as likely to be disinterest as any negative impact of that film would be forgotten at this point.

I think that this could end up being a really big obstacle for this game tbh, the last 'great' Indy film came out in 1989. That cross media synergy isn't so high as there's not a lot of non-movie stuff with Indy that's helped sustain a fanbase around it, at least not below the age of 35 imo

If the game reviews superbly tho then maybe it's all moot, and this is the sort of team who could pull that off maybe

It's neat that they don't just dub the German and Italian parts all in English

This looks like a tremendous treatment of the property but it needs a bit more for me to pick it up on release I think. But it reminds me of the kinds of games that don't get made nowadays, with the lite immersive sim elements

Only weird thing is animations, feels like something is missing there. But that's just a presentation thing. It's in this weird spot of being very high budget and lavish looking, but also like it's cutting significant corners here and there, but it looks like it's prioritising the things which matter at least

To me it looks like a hyper-detailed last-gen game instead a proper current one, but I don't really want to level that as a point of critique at a game in this climate. Especially as the environments do look pretty and it does seem to use a lot of different areas, biomes and assets.

It looks like a genuinely good and ambitious adaptation, and from a design perspective more Starbreeze than Machinegames. I do wonder if the suits at Microsoft completely misread the room about the IPs mainstream appeal though, because I can't really see this doing exceptionally well independently of how good it actually turns out as a game.

And while I realise it's a lose-lose scenario for MS, I think it's not a good idea to split up the releases, because the big marketing push will have long gone by the time it launches on the more popular system with more sales potential.

I also saw somewhere that it's around 130GB in size which made me think of GTA6 and how big that'll be.

For disc-buying people like myself this is also not so good news because they'd have to press two discs for the PS5 version and three for Xbox and I can't really see Microsoft doing either of these things. So one month of Gamepass it is then.

Good trailer though. Shows a lot, but not too much.

Honestly, path tracing isn't even worth it outside of Alan Wake I feel. The lighting is too laggy right now. Regular RT for me, don't want to go crazy with the image reconstruction stuff, keep it responsive thanks

I'm surprised that the ray tracing is required. I feel like this is the first game to do that? No rasterized settings at all?

Hope this turns into something cool and surprising, sort of interested in it now

I can't believe you would need a 4080 with frame gen and DLSS3 to play a game at 1440p60 (After upscaling). I hope these specs are wrong and too conservative or something. Because that sounds stupid.

But if this is correct I guess consoles will be between minimum and recommended without Full RT, and Series S will be straight minimum 1080p30? Ouch

Despite an 'early access' version being sold, as is tradition with MS at this point, Path Tracing on PC will only arrive with the game's official/delayed launch on December 9th: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/indiana-jones-marvel-rivals-geforce-game-ready-driver/

Not quite as massive a fuckup as that corrupt save data thing from Star Wars Outlaws, but some of those publishers don't even try to hide anymore just how little they care.
