mmmark
Seems alright from the 10-15 minutes of the beta I got to play as capt, hulk, Iron Man and thor before it kept repeating the redhead‘s (black widow?) cut scene over and over on the bridge. Would like to have known what the game was like properly after the tutorial but I’m not doing it over again to find out.
one-armed dwarf
The captain America bit runs like absolute shit. Its just such a jank fest Turned it off when I got to the second section cause the fan noise was so loud on pro even with headphones it got uncomfortable
HandsomeDead
@mmmark it did the same for me but I was playing when it wasn't fully installed so I assumed it was that. The tutorial section is the bit they've showed a lot of already so it was all a relatively known quantity but experimenting with what I could with the limited access to skills still proved there is potential interesting play. I'm pretty disappointed with the hero's specials though as most of them were just area attacks. Cap and Black Widow seemed to be the most fun to me so far. It seems like there is some interesting status effects the enemies can use going by the tools on the load screen but I guess it's a case of whether the beta will get into that in any kind of meaningful way, but again it's all just potential right now. I got constant network drop outs during the tutorial, which had no actual affect apart from an annoying pop-up but it doesn't bold well for when I get into the rest of the game. one-armed dwarf
I did lol a bit when I learned that throwing Thors hammer puts him in fist mode and you can call it back hitting guys on the way. Based on what id seen it would either be Thor or Iron Man I'd want to play. I thought Blaxk Widow seemed terrible in the tutorial but it might be the terrible boss creating that impression
DANGERMAN
it's a bit of a bewilderfuck in the tutorial but getting past that and playing with Hulk and it's really basic. It just feels like a cut scene prior to that, and the gameplay is it just asking you to press whatever button it decides to tell you to, I didn't feel like I was learning to play the game. It actually feels like different studios made the tutorial and the "proper" gameplay sections they're so different in feel. I appreciate this is going to sound like hyperbole, and I suppose I am used to playing games on pc so maybe I'm just not used to what non-PS4 exclusives look like, but I thought it looked rough. I can't say I had any performance issues, but it looks really buzzy and grainy to me. Even in the options menu it looks lower res, the performance mode looks sharper to me. Possibly the 4k is a dynamic resolution, wheras the performance dials some settings down outside that, so the UI looks sharper because there's nothing else going on? Either way the particle effects and the edges, mainly in the bridge area tbf, really didn't look 4k to me, no where close
HandsomeDead
Yeah, that's computer gamer talk. I'm low budget console gamer so it generally looks nice to me. Not smooth, but I mostly expect that with games like this though I find it to be easy to look at. Except when it does weird, visual glitches since they always pop out more with games like this. I spent a bit of time with the core game and I agree the intro does not set you up for the main game; it also doesn't set you up for the story, as the mission happens then you get a still frame, comic book style cutscene explaining the premise to how this game works the way it does. I totally think it was mostly made to make a cool trailer, I can't think of any other reason. But the main game... It's fine. I can't put my finger on why it's not quite working for me as I think it should. I do think that in a number of ways that Warframe is this game's nearest point of comparison, definitely more so than Destiny. And that's a problem. Abilities hero's have are no where near as creative so less thinking goes on, especially if you're using Hulk or Ms. Marvel. I also find it really un-user friendly for a game that I expect to have a very broad appeal, in terms of matchmaking, finding missions and switching characters. And I play Monster Hunter so to find it as troublesome as that is a problem. I got into using Black Widow and she does have cool options. But a general problem I have with the combat is why is there both a dodge function and a parry one? I spent the whole tutorial familiarising myself with the dodge, but I get in-game and I see all good abilities are tied to the parry. When doing reaction based shit I don't want that 50/50 in my mind, because it'll mean I'll do neither. Fuck sake, pick one.
retroed
Played up until where you can select your next mission at the war table. That's an hour I won't get back. It's rubbish. I thought I'd play it to get the Fortnite unlock for my son, but I think it's linked the wrong Epic account, so has ended up a proper waste of time. And I'm not sure how much more I'd have to play. More than I'm willing.
HandsomeDead
Tbh, if I'm being real, the intro section isn't any worse than the mediocre shit you lot play. I've had a little to drink so I'm being obnoxious, but there is truth to my bullshit and what Ed said should be ignored. Fuck sake. If you want legit impressions listen to those that do play games like this, because you won't get it from mainstream media. Less of pointless shit from someone who don't care. But Ed, you are a very cool gamer. Like, I'm not here to protect the game from legit criticisms. I have so many myself. But I would rather not waste my time with someone who would never play a game like this anyway. But that's just me ?

I was bored out of my mind, and couldn't believe how clunky and last gen it felt. I've played all the games you reference in your previous post, and none of those are bad games. I genuinely can't see what you're getting from this. You lot? ?

I'm at the mission select. I was going to turn it off for the cricket but its raining down south, as usual. I suppose that I'd rather watch test cricket than play this big budget game says something I was trying to place what is wrong with it too @HandsomeDeadand I think it's something @retroed said. It feels last gen, maybe older. Obviously it's got all the modern indicators of the end times like different types of materials to improve the various bits of gear, so in that way it's very up to date. Compare it to Batman though, which I suppose I'm largely doing because it's a comic book game too, but when it comes to combat. In a fight the camera pulls back a bit and Batman snaps to enemies, flinging himself across the screen. It actually looks stupid when it's slowed down but it feels good to play, Spiderman is the same. Avengers combat doesn't have that, you don't even stay locked on to enemies, it reminds me more of Fighting Force 2 Maybe Black Widow solves this, she seemed to move quicker and has that grapple, no one else seems to close the gap quickly enough
AndyKurosaki
From what I’ve played, this seems alright. Chucking your hammer as Thor is fun. Smashing groups of enemies as Hulk feels satisfying. Black Widow is the only one I’ve not enjoyed much. It’s decent enough.
one-armed dwarf
This game btw was the first time I went into a menu looking for a way to turn off motion blur. Maybe the graphics are alright but I've never really played a big budget game which has as big a problem as this does with motion clarity. It's not simply a question of framerate although that would probably fix most of what is wrong here. But it just looks and feels horrible in motion and has terrible screen shake all the time that feels like you're being boxed in the head when doing attacks
DisturbedSwan
Played a bit of this over the weekend. Did the opening mission and then the following mission with Hulk and Kamala. I did quite like the opening mission aside from the combat (more on that later), the bombast of it all, hurtling through the destruction and chaos and the bits with Black Widow where you're pummelling the villain as he flies about in the air are just great set piece moments that really got the ol' heart pumping. I had low expectations in terms of performance and polish but ended up really impressed with it, it ran flawlessly for me without so much as one moment of slowdown throughout and I only had one minor bug, didn't have one connection issue either which is very impressive for a beta of this size and reach. For me, graphically, it's actually way more impressive than I thought as well, the videos I saw before made it look rather bland graphically and in terms of art direction but I ended up thinking it was really pretty and vibrant for the majority of my time with it so far. The biggest problem it has is the combat though. It's just dull and very nondescript, like playing one of those last gen Sega published Marvel games like Thor/Iron Man that came out, it just didn't do anything for me really and I found myself getting bored already throughout the second story mission. It's fun enough initially playing as Hulk and Kamala but it just gets real old real fast. I haven't had enough time with the others but think Black Widow has potential, Thor and Iron Man I'm not so sure on, just felt like a bit of a clusterfuck but I didn't get enough time with them to judge properly to be fair. I will say though that Kamala Khan is the shining star for me so far, her VO is absolutely perfect and I just love the character already. Seeing her find loads of old Avengers artefacts during the second mission and hearing her joy and excitement at seeing them was just a fantastic moment, you feel the same joy and excitement along with her seeing all these cool little Easter Eggs in that mission. Likewise when she's exploring the Helicarrier afterwards it's just great seeing her interact with all these little bits and pieces throughout. I think the story is really strong so far, it's definitely hooked me already and I do want to find out what happens for the rest of the game now. It has setup a nice bit of mystery to it which has intrigued me, setting Kamala in the 'lead investigator' role if you like is a masterstroke as well, I love that she's the one that ends up uniting the Avengers again as well. She feels like the main character in the story really, as she's such a great character I feel that'll carry it far. Unfortunately, it's the combat that'll stop me from coming back to it anytime soon really, it's just not strong enough to sustain my interest for long periods of time. I do think with a bunch of mates playing as the whole roster of Avengers this can be great, and I do think they can improve the combat over time but at this stage it's just not enough for me to be satisfied with. I cancelled my pre-order before playing the beta as I just don't get the time to play much at all at the moment, if I did I would've definitely stuck with it and felt a little less anxious about doing so but yeah, this kind of game is just a no go for me at the moment, especially with how much else I want to play on my PS4 and PC. I might pick it up on/around the PS5 launch though, or at Christmas, I think this type of game doesn't really need you going in Day 1 on, and most of the time you get a worse experience. But the beta kinda sucked when I tried to do high level stuff. I could rarely get more than one other person, even when doing the boss of the game, which is a pretty cool fight, but you need a squad and match making on this beta is awful so everytime I tried it I got one other person and match making would die so we'd try it with two AIs, which were hopeless, but I can see an easy way to beat it with a proper team. I guess I like it does have that kind of challenge. While the AI wasn't doing it's best I could still see how a proper team would destroy it. Maybe they are doing a good homage to The Avengers. Maryokutai
I played the beta for lesser people (Xbox One) a bit yesterday. Combat was better than I expected, at least in terms of feedback and impact, even though it was a bit shallow. I didn't like how it taught you how to jump over shields in the tutorial only to not allow you to do the same thing later against the droids as Kamal. That's not particularly good design in terms of readability. The general flow of the game feels a bit monotonous with the little baby platforming and combat sections in between. For all its shiny exterior in its essence this plays like a licensed PS2 tie-in game. Not particularly bad but I get the feeling they could have done a lot more with this if it hadn't been designed with GAAS in mind. The inventory screen still makes me shake my head, the amount of numbers, materials, equipment, resources and overall icons shown on that thing almost feel like a meta joke. It's the inventory version of AC Unity's map. I did like the story setup though and Kamala is a really charming lead. If this didn't have that horrible Spidey deal hanging over it I'd probably get it for cheap at some point to play through the story. I guess for that it would be fun enough – but alas, no Spidey on Xbox, no deal.
