I think the modded version in itself is a bit anti-purist because it boots the games from an SD card, removing the extra noise and also a bit of tinkering when switching imported discs around with the DC-X. And I'm just half-joking about this, I think the whirring up of the disc is part of these systems, too.

I think normal, unmodded DCs should be quite a bit cheaper. You could just get one of those and buy your favourite games from ebay or simply burn the ROMs on a CD. You just have to pay attention to which version of the console you get in that case because not all of them are easily compatible with self-burned discs IIRC.

I remember it making whirring noises but that clicking sounds fucked... mine definitely didn't do that, I played mine in my old box bedroom... I think I would've noticed that kind've noise.

Maybe it did sound like that and I don’t remember. Extremely possible.

The Dreamcast was the first console I ever had that broke. The laser reading lens thing. It got to the point where I had to literally stand it vertically on it’s side for it to work properly

Even though I never used it very much relative to other consoles I owned, I still think Dreamcast is top 3 coolest consoles of all time along with GameCube and GBA

I think you were probably too young for the OG PS1 Maf? Those things were really unreliable, we had one where we basically had to realign the laser every day

Anyway, if the question is "should I buy a Dreamcast?" then the answer is always yes.

I have an sd card reading one, but I don't use it a huge amount because I've got a lot of physical games, and it's easier to just play them than it is to download and move over a rom. I have a HDMI converter for it too, so, yeah. Perfect console innit

Wasn't sure where to put this but Alanah had the lead designer of Tales on Kenzera on her podcast recently and the episode is super interesting. Going back to his speech at the Game Awards announcement of the game hits even harder after this.

Why does it sound like you’ve relented to play it lol

I only played a bit of the EW2 so could go back to it. But I want to play Hi-Fi Rush and Prey first

I rather disliked the first Evil Within but I think the general consensus was that the second one was quite a step up. Not sure if it's a game I want to play though.

I did fire up Ghostwire Tokyo today in honour of Tango, just to finally experience it a bit. Doesn't play very well unfortunately but it has a cool style and setting. Hi-Fi Rush is really the game where everything came together I think. Imagine an EW3 made with that kind of confidence and polish, could have been something else and the first real contender to RE since what feels like the PS2 days.

This has been on my mind for a few days now so I'm just gonna come out and say it... does no-one else think that Tango kind of traded on the whole Shinji Mikami thing and once he left the writing was already on the wall for them?

Ghostwire was definitely a bit clunky but I really enjoyed it still. Gets better as you play it. Aesthetically it’s really something.

One of those special 7/10 games for me.

Very true about them really finding their groove with Hi Fi Rush though. Which makes it sting anymore. Imagine what they could have achieved next. This is what companies like MS don’t understand when firing people all the time - they’re building up experience, a relationship and way of working within their company when kept together like that which will usually help the chance of them creating amazing games. You you can’t get kind of synergy overnight. And they’ve just thrown away all that experience and time. Cunts.

Shinji Mikami

It was said he wasn’t really involved in Hi Fi Rush. More just support. As has been said previously too, part of the point of Tango  was him nurturing new talent. That’s what he wanted to do. And they’ve just destroyed that.
