UK Chart Roundup (Week 16)

Quote

The remaster of a cult favourite 2010 PS3 game has topped the UK retail charts this week.

Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139 tops the charts, knocking FIFA 21 down to No.2. The last Nier game that was released came in March 2017 in the form of the acclaimed Nier Automata. This remake sold 50% fewer copies than Automata.

89% of sales were on PS4 and 11% on Xbox One. Digital sales are not included.

Ultimately, it's a very quiet week for the boxed games market. Just 137,000 physical games were sold last week across the UK. It's so quiet that there's even a PC game in the Top Ten. Football Manager 2021, which sells primarily on digital platforms, is at No.6 after a 66% sales increase. The game benefitted from a £20 price promotion at UK retailers (namely, Currys).

Also new this week is the MotoGP 21 video game at No.19. The Milestone title sold best on PS5, accounting for 37% of sales with the PS4 on 31%.

Elsewhere, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury holds No.3 despite a 24% sales slip, Animal Crossing: New Horizons drops to No.4 after a 30% slide, and Mario Kart 8: Deluxe is at No.5 due to a 21% sales dip.

1 hour ago, OCH said:

Imagine that, a long anticipated sequel's sales being more than the original... Sounds like a 'water is wet' kind of thing to say.

yeah, I know he's just stating a fact and we're maybe not supposed to draw any major conclusions from it, but I would expect the new Pokemon Snap on the incredibly popular Switch to beat an old N64 game from 25 years ago pretty comfortably

UK Chart Roundup (Week 17)

Quote

New Pokémon Snap has topped the UK physical retail charts in its debut week.

The Switch game sold over four times as many copies at launch than the original managed, which reached No.9 way back in September 2000. The first game arrived in the middle of Pokémon mania, however it was an N64 title, which was a console that struggled to sell in the UK (1.5 million N64s had been sold compared with 5.4 million PlayStations). Over time Pokémon Snap went on to become a decent hit for the console.

The Switch is significantly more successful than the N64, but even compared to more recent games the result looks good. New Pokémon Snap's opening week is 2.5 times bigger than the last Pokémon spin-off game: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, which launched on Nintendo Switch in March 2020.

It is the third biggest Switch launch of the year behind Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury and Monster Hunter Rise.

The photography game was also comfortably ahead of No.2, which was another new release in the form of PS5 exclusive Returnal.

Sony's roguelike game is the first significant PS5 title to release at retail since launch, and it reviewed strongly. However, its launch sales are below what we've seen from previous AAA PlayStation exclusives. Of course there are more than a few caveats to consider: the PS5 is still in its early days in terms of install base, the game's price is high (its average selling price was £68), it faces stiff competition from next week's Resident Evil: Village and it's in a niche genre.

And as with all PS5 games, we should expect sales to rise and fall as more consoles come to market.

Last week's No.1, Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139, drops all the way down to No.22 after a 78% fall in sales week-on-week.

It was a good week for retail overall, with over 180,000 games sold. There were a number of game sales that rose week-on-week, including Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury at No.3 (sales up 10%), Mario Kart 8: Deluxe at No.4 (up 6%), Minecraft on Switch at No.7 (up 7%), GTA 5 at No.8 (up 23%), Ring Fit Adventure at No.9 (up 6%) and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War at No.10 (up 20%). The only two games to fall in sales in the Top Ten were Animal Crossing: New Horizons at No.5 (down 7%) and FIFA 21 at No.6 (down 23%).

There was one other new release in the boxed charts this week in the form of Terminator Resistance Enhanced on PS5, which just made the Top 40 at No.37.

Next week, Resident Evil: Village will be No.1. Digital sales data is not included in these charts.

My analysis on the £70 pricing situation and Returnal’s performance in the UK:

  • Although PS5’s are still selling like hot cakes worldwide and have sold 7.8 million, a small proportion of that (likely <500k units) has been sold in the UK so I don’t think at this time any PS5 only game is going to sell gangbusters. Demon’s Souls has similarly not sold too many copies because of the above too, likewise with Sackboy (although this was on PS4 too).
  • Despite the underperformance, the game is sold out at Amazon and some other retailers at the time of writing, so it is possible they didn’t quite manufacture enough physical copies.
  • Recent Sony earnings show they sell their games 65% digitally at this time, so as always Retail doesn’t give us the full picture.
  • Like Miles Morales it could have long legs on it and sell more as the weeks go on.
  • £70 price point (in reality £65 unless you don’t shop around) could be a contributory factor but not enough data at this time. Ratchet and Clank will be a truer litmus test.
  • Could of done better in the US where the price rise is +$10 over last gen

Personally I find it really distasteful to say ‘hope it underperforms’ or words to that effect on any game, the developers have worked hard for 2-7 years on their game, the pricing is not their field so they aren’t to blame for it if it ‘fails’ because of that one factor, it’s the sales/marketing teams. I do feel for Housemarque and feel a bit guilty myself for not picking up Returnal now.

I’ve said before numerous times but think folks need to calm down a little on the £70 pricing outrage. I don’t know why I need to say this again and again but it seems it is worth reiterating. At the start of every generation games go up in price, they were £60 at the start of the PS4/XB1 generation, they’re £70 with select publishers this generation. £70 is the RRP, that will get ignored more and more by retailers the more PS5s/Xbox Series’ that are out there. Its been less than 6 months.

Unless you don’t shop around you will not pay the full £70. I linked to an eBay deal from Simply Games (Boss Deals) last month that would’ve got you Returnal for £55, another site (GameByte) had it for £58 just last week. Similarly for any upcoming titles you will not pay the full whack for them unless you literally just click on the first site you see and click ‘buy’. The price will go down quickly and will likely settle at the £55-£60 mark, a little more than last generation.

I don’t see what the point is in buying a £450 console then not wanting to buy any games for it, what’s the point in having one? Honestly, if value for money is your prime concern then the Xbox Series X offers far better value with all Microsoft & Bethesda 1P titles included, along with the vast library of AA/AAA 3P Game Pass titles. If you already have a PS5 or want one for those big blockbuster AAA PS titles then why miss out on that. Buy the game in a sale, pre-owned or shop round for a deal. Or you could sell the game for a higher price than usual after you’re done with it to get 75-85% of your money back.

UK Chart Roundup (Week 18)

Quote

Resident Evil: Village has comfortably taken No.1 spot in this week's UK boxed charts, according to GfK Entertainment.

The horror game is the second biggest boxed launch of the year behind Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. 49% of its sales were on PS5, 31% on PS4 and 20% on Xbox.

It's the third biggest PS5 game launch since behind Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which were released in November last year. In fact, week one sales alone has made it the seventh biggest PS5 game so far, behind Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Demon's Souls, Watch Dogs Legion and Sackboy: A Big Adventure.

It's the second biggest week one for a boxed Xbox Series game, too, behind Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. It is already No.3 on the all-time Xbox Series list, behind Call of Duty and Immortals Fenyx Rising.

However, it's not got close to the sales of previous Resident Evil games. Sales are down over 25% compared with the launch of Resident Evil 2: Remake (released in 2019) and almost 40% down compared with 2017's Resident Evil 7. It did sell better than last year's Resident Evil 3 Remake, with launch sales 76% higher.

Of course, this is just physical sales, and digital has accelerated significantly over the past 18 months. Considering the game's popularity on Steam, it is likely the game will have achieved strong results once the digital data comes in later this week.

The launch of Resident Evil Village means that last week's No.1, New Pokémon Snap, tumbles to No.2 after a 63% drop in sales week-on-week. Last week's No.2 game, Returnal, falls to No.15 after an 84% drop in sales.

FIFA 21 is at No.3, the football game rises three places after some pricing activity boosted sales by 79%. Nintendo Switch continues its dominance of the physical charts, with six games in the Top Ten. Alongside the aforementioned Pokémon Snap, the other games are Mario Kart 8: Deluxe at No.4 (up 29%), Animal Crossing: New Horizons at No.5 (up 5%), Minecraft on Switch at No.6 (up 13%), Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury at No.7 (down 28%) and Ring Fit Adventure at No.9 (up 13%).

Nintendo released a new blue version of the Switch Lite console last week.

Jet Set is criminally under represented. The counter culture stuff is wildly under represented and it's been such a long time since we had a game that it'll have made a lot of cultures and sub cultures that could be explored.

Agreed. I'm really surprised it isn't as widespread as Tetris? Especially considering Sega seems to have given up on Columns.
