UK Chart, week ending November 17th.

Quote

Pokémon Let's Go's launch sales are down compared with previous major Pokémon titles. Opening week sales of Let's Go are down more than 60 per cent compared with 2016's Sun and Moon and are down five per cent compared with 2013's Pokémon X and Y.

Fallout 76 - an online multiplayer take on the franchise - was not expected to sell as strongly as Fallout 4. Of course, any new game from Bethesda Game Studios is still a major release, yet this title has got off to a slow start. Fallout 76 debuts at No.3, and sales are down 82.4 per cent compared with the previous game in the franchise - 2015's Fallout 4.

Even so, due to its higher retail price, Fallout 76 was actually the game that generated the most revenue at UK retail last week. Because of its budget price, Spyro was actually No.3 in the revenue charts.

Hitman 2 was the other big adult release of the week and it, too, had a weaker-than-usual opening. IO Interactive's stealth game debuts at No.10. The last Hitman title was an episodic digital release, so comparisons are impossible to make. Compared with 2012's Hitman Absolution, launch physical sales of Hitman 2 are down 90 per cent.

  • PC and console software: $965 million (up 104% compared to $473 million)
  • Accessories: $280 million (up 54 percent from $182 million)

The $1.55 billion in October 2018 dollar sales represents the highest total spend for a month of October since The NPD Group began tracking the industry in 1995. The previous high was $1.36 billion reached in October 2008.

Year-to-date spending across video game Hardware, Software, Accessories and Game Cards has grown 21 percent when compared to the same period a year ago, to $10.5 billion. This is the highest year-to-date total spend achieved since the $10.9 billion achieved between January and October 2010.

SOFTWARE

Best October for software ever: Dollar sales of Console, Portable and PC Games Software totalled $965 million in October 2018, more than doubling compared to a year ago. This represents an all-time high for PC & Video Games Software spending in an October month. The previous best of $743 million was reached in October 2008.

Black Ops IIII tops the chart: Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII is the best-selling game of October. Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII launch month dollar sales represent the 8th highest in Video Game history since The NPD Group began tracking in 1995. Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII instantly becomes the best-selling game of the year, and the 2nd best-selling game across the past twelve month period, trailing only Call of Duty: WWII.

Red Dead Redemption 2 sales 3x the original: With just nine days of reported sales, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the second best-selling game of October 2018 and is now also the second best-selling game year to date. Red Dead Redemption 2 launch month sales more than tripled those of the previous title in the series, Red Dead Redemption, which launched May 2010.

AC Odyssey continues to find success: Assassin's Creed: Odyssey repeated its September success, again ranking as the third best-selling game of the month. In September, the game had double-digit percentage dollar sales growth when compared to the launch of Assassin's Creed: Origins a year ago.

Super Mario party is the third fastest selling Mario Party game: Super Mario Party climbs the charts this month to rank fifth in October sales after its September debut placed it at number nine in the rankings. Over each title's first two months in market, Super Mario Party is now the third fastest selling Mario Party game in history, trailing only Mario Party and Mario Party 8.

Soul Calibur VI debuts at #6: Soul Calibur VI debuts as the sixth best-selling game of October. Soul Calibur VI achieved the third highest launch month dollar sales for the franchise in tracked history, trailing only Soul Calibur IV and Soul Calibur II.

Activision and Take Two are the top publishers this year: Activision Blizzard was the highest revenue generating publisher for the month of October, while Take-Two Interactive has achieved the highest total revenue year to date.

HARDWARE & ACCESSORIES

Hardware spend is up YTD: For the 2018 year-to-date period, hardware spending has increased 19 percent, to $2.7 billion. Spending gains for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Plug N Play devices such as the NES Classic Edition and SNES Classic Edition continue to drive growth.

PS4 was the top selling console in October: PlayStation 4 was October's best-selling hardware platform in both units and dollars sold. PlayStation 4 hardware unit sales achieved an all-time October high for the platform, while PlayStation 4 hardware dollar sales reached its highest point for an October month since October 2014. October 2018 unit sales of PlayStation 4 reached the highest mark for any PlayStation hardware platform in an October month since the PlayStation 2 in October 2002.

Black Friday sales help push 'FIFA 19' back to the top of the league

Huge ‘Black Friday’ sales propel ‘FIFA 19’ back to the top of the All Formats Chart, climbing from No5.

Sales of ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’ are up significantly, however it has to settle for second place ahead of ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’ which makes way, down one place to No3. ‘Battlefield V’ debuts at No4 ahead of two more Black Friday promoted games: ‘Forza Horizon 4’ at No5 and ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’ at No6.

Nearly all titles in the Top 40 benefit from promotions, however there is still room for two more new entries: ‘Farming Simulator 19’ at No16 and ‘Bendy and The Ink Machine’ at No30.

GamesIndustry.biz chart rundown

Quote

FIFA 19, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 continue to perform strongly post-Black Friday.

Although sales took a tumble over Black Friday, over one million physical games were sold in the UK last week generating £32.6 million.

FIFA 19 retains No.1, with a 39 per cent drop in sales week-on-week. Red Dead Redemption 2 rises to No.2 (sales down 24 per cent), swapping place with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 at No.3 (down 64 per cent).

Meanwhile, Battlefield V holds on at No.4, despite a 48 per cent fall in sales. It's actually quite a minor drop in sales for a big AAA shooter, although the game continues to perform well below what's typical for the franchise. Note: Sales in this data only include physical games sold.

The new game of the week is Darksiders III, which debuts at No.32. The game has sold 84 per cent less than the last Darksiders II, and more than 70 per cent below the original title. Those games were released in 2010 and 2012, where the digital market was significantly smaller (again, download sales are not counted).

Darksiders III debuts a place above Hitman 2, which returns to the Top 40 after dropping out of the charts entirely last week.

It's been a difficult year for some games, but not all, as there have been a few exceptional performers this Christmas - particularly exclusive games.

Forza Horizon 4 on Xbox One is at No.5, and is one of the standout performers of the season. It's been out nine weeks, and sales are 18 per cent up compared with the first nine weeks of Forza Horizon 3 (released in 2016).

Spider-Man is another standout. The game is the fastest-selling PS4 game ever released and is on course to overtake Uncharted 4 as the best-selling PS4 exclusive this generation (UK sales).

Meanwhile, the Pokémon Let's Go games for Nintendo Switch continue to perform very strongly. Although not technically 'mainline' games in the franchise, they are the first major Pokémon titles for Nintendo's new platform. When they launched three weeks ago, the combined sales were five per cent down compared with the opening week sales of the first Pokémon games on 3DS (X and Y). Three weeks in, and Let's Go is now tracking eight per cent ahead of X and Y. Note: Pokémon X and Y was released a year later in the 3DS' lifecycle, so the install base was higher.

The Pikachu Edition of Let's Go is comfortably the best-selling of the two, with the Eevee version tracking 45 per cent behind.

UK Chart roundup

Quote

Super Smash Bros Ultimate breaks franchise records to become this week's No.1 UK boxed game.

It is the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch game released so far, eclipsing the combined launch sales of Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu and Pokémon: Let's Go Eevee.

The game's launch sales are 302 per cent higher than the numbers achieved by Super Smash Bros for Wii U and they're 233 per cent higher than Super Smash Bros for 3DS. Launch sales are also 62.5 per cent higher than the Wii game Super Smash Bros Brawl. All of which means Ultimate is the fastest-selling Smash Bros game in the franchise's UK history.

It's worth noting that the sales only include physical numbers, so digital downloads of Ultimate have not been counted.

There was a Switch hardware promotion this week featuring Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, which boosted sales of that game 45 per cent week-on-week. The title rose four places to No.5.

Over Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the launch of Smash Bros, around 200,000 Switch consoles have been sold in the UK - retailers have told us.

The arrival of Smash Bros means that FIFA 19 loses its No.1 spot, and actually falls two spaces to No.3. Red Dead Redemption 2 holds firm at No.2 for a second consecutive week.

The other big new release this week is Just Cause 4. The Square Enix title debuts two spaces below where Just Cause 3 landed three years ago, and sales are down 61.5 per cent compared to the launch sales of that game. It's the slowest selling Just Cause game released so far, although if digital sales were included, it may have outsold the 2006 original.

The PS4 version of Just Cause 4 accounted for 55 per cent of the sales, with the rest coming on Xbox One.

One other new launch this week was PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds on PS4, which propels the action game back into the charts at No.22 (sales up 321 per cent).

Last week's new release, Darksiders III, has disappeared from the charts altogether.

Outside of Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, all games in the Top Ten dropped in sales week-on-week, as the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales period fully ends. 972,365 games were sold last week, generating over £35 million.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has sold 128,000 units, about 10% more than Pokémon Let's Go!

Or 135,000 if we extrapolate for 100% of the market.

I wonder what that 20 million Switches sold this financial year forcast is looking like. Last I heard it was well behind.

It’s above 20m atm. I think the forecast was about 40m which seems silly. Like they didn’t account for slowdown in a year of no Zelda, Mario or Splatoon.

Red Dead Rises to No1 Again

‘Red Dead Redemption 2’ saw a sales jump of 19% to take the top position this week. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’, the previous No1, has dropped 3 places after its impressive debut.

Extensive price promotions saw a fluctuation in the charts for many titles including ‘FIFA 19’, which is up one place to No2. ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’was an example of one of the biggest sales jumps this week, due to significant retailer price drops. It managed to climb up to No3 from last week’s No7 spot.

Thanks to the NPD Group for the breakdown.

Here are the numbers for November 2018:

  • Total: $2,693 million (up 0% percent from $2,706 million in November 2017)
  • Hardware: $1,182 million (up 3% from $1,147 million)
  • PC and console software: $1,008 million (down 15% compared to $1,188 million)
  • Accessories: $503 million (up 35% from $371 million)

November 2018 tracked spending across video game Hardware, Software, Accessories and Game Cards totaled $2.7 billion, flat when compared to a year ago. Gains in Hardware, Accessories and Game Card spending were offset by a decline in Software due to the shift of the launch of Call of Duty into the October month.

Year-to-date spending across video game Hardware, Software, Accessories and Game Cards has grown 16 percent when compared to the same period a year ago, to $13.2 billion. This is the highest year-to-date total spend achieved since the $13.9 billion achieved between January and November 2010.

SOFTWARE

Best Year for Software since 2011: Dollar sales of Console, Portable and PC Games Software totaled $1 billion in November 2018, declining 15 percent when compared to a year ago. The shift in launch timing for Call of Duty from November to October is the driver of the change. Year-to-date dollar sales of Console, Portable and PC Games Software exceeded $5.8 billion, a 9 percent increase over the same time period last year. This is the highest year-to-date total for Software spending since the $7 billion achieved in the year-to-date 2011 comparable period.

RDR2 is the best selling game of the month: Red Dead Redemption 2 is the best-selling game of November 2018 and is the 2nd best-selling game year-to-date. With two months in market, sales of Red Dead Redemption 2 now exceed the lifetime sales of the previous title in the franchise, Red Dead Redemption, by nearly 40 percent.

Black Ops 4 is the best selling game this year: Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII is the second best-selling game of November, and remains the best-selling game year to date. Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII is the second fastest selling game on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in history, trailing only 2017's Call of Duty: WWII. This is the fifth consecutive year, and ninth time in the last 10 years, that a title from the Call of Duty franchise has been the best-selling game over the January through November time period

Fallout 76 falls short of 4 and New Vegas: Fallout 76 is the 4th best-selling game of November, despite digital not being reported for Bethesda Softworks published titles. Fallout 76 physical sales achieved the third highest launch month sales in franchise history, trailing only Fallout 4 and Fallout New Vegas.

Pokemon has a strong opening; Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu and Pokemon: Let's Go Eevee are the #5 and #6 best-selling games of November, respectively. Launch month sales of Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu are the second highest in franchise history, trailing only Pokeman Stadium, which launched on the Nintendo 64 in the March 2000 tracking period. Please note that Pokemon Let's Go sales totals include only physical sales, as digital sales are not currently reported for Nintendo published titles. According to Nintendo, the titles have sold 2 million units in the US, including digital sales.

Spyro Remastered charts in the Top Ten: Spyro Reignited Trilogy is the #9 best-selling game of November. The launch month dollar sales of Spyro Reignited Trilogy are more than 30 percent higher than the combined launch month sales of all other Spyro games in history (excluding Skylanders).

Black Friday deals help God of War: Sony's God of War returns to the monthly top 20 best-sellers list for the first time since August, ranking as the #16 best-selling game of November. It is currently the #7 best-selling game year-to-date.

All current gen consoles sell over 1.3m each: For the first time in history, three Console platforms achieved more than 1 million units sold in a November month, as the Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One each generated over 1.3m units of sales. It is only the second time in history any 3 platforms achieved more than 1 million units sold in a November period, the first occurred in November 2010, when the Nintendo DS, Wii and Xbox 360 achieved the feat.
