Halo Infinite

With regards to how Halo looks, I think they've done a good job getting the look right based on what we've seen, but despite what they said this isn't built from the ground up for Series X. This has got to run on the basic Xbox One, that thing isn't going to be great at big open worlds, and you can't just turn everything down to get it to run, there's some things it will just struggle with

I don’t care about the graphics. It just looked so boring. Rage 2 looked fun in its trailer. Why does Halo that wants to sell you a £400 console have one of the most boring displays of gameplay.

In an interview with Inside Gaming, Xbox Marketing GM Aaron Greenberg responded to criticism about Infinite's graphics, saying: "Listen, we're in the middle of a global pandemic. It's July, we're far from [launch in] Holiday, you're seeing a work-in-progress game."

Yeah, six months old build and all that. Basically the game that launches will be a year older than the version we've seen yesterday. I remember something similar happening with PGR3 I think when Xbox 360 launched. That game looked rough only a couple of months before release but was an eye-opener when it came out. But there wasn't an Xbox (1) version for that one, of course.

I'll give them the benefit of doubt but I have zero expectations. The fact that Raytracing will come via update after launch tells me they're rushing this like crazy.

Off topic a bit but the ray tracing stuff is weird cause I'd kinda thought that one of the benefits of RT is it's easier to implement for the developer than the 'fake' solutions today.

I'd guess that the cross gen thing is the reason there cause they have to have a lighting engine that works on Xbone. Eventually I wonder if RT will be the only lighting available on games. Minimum spec a RTX card on PC or AMD equivalent. Could see that start to happen a few years into next gen after the cross gen period is over.

The other thing about Halo is that it could still be fun. A game doesn’t have to be the best looking game ever to be great. Halo 3 when it came out was certainly not the best looking game that year by a long way. It’s still one of my favourite shooter campaigns of all time.

I think it’s just hard to separate that when presented as the flagship game for the most powerful console ever. Through those lenses it’s rough going.

But through the lenses of. Man, I could be down for some Halo and this certainly looked like Halo. It did not look terrible. It just looked a bit ordinary.

I think I’m looking forward to the game in that sense now I’ve watched the footage a few times and have digested it. It was just that the initial come down of holding the breath as it was about to be shown, and then seeing what it is. That transition between expectation and reality had a real bad snap to it.

And I should of known better because I’ve been beating this drum all year about why a cross gen approach is bad and the hype still got the better of me

Tbh if current indications mean anything it really feels like both MS and Sony should just delay these launches, they have very few interesting titles* and in the case of Halo maybe some aren't ready for release.

They wont do it cause it sounds like they've committed to this thing now but feels like the pandemic has ruined a lot of these plans.

You've got to think also if they release one really stinky game it can have a bad effect on the brand (Mass Effect Andromeda)

*In the case of Sony I can only think of Miles Morales.

Don’t quite get why you’re lumping Sony in with Microsoft. They’ve got there shit together @one-armed dwarf

Deathloop, Returnal, Rift Apart, GT7, Ghostwire Tokyo etc. Along with Spidey are all interesting titles to me.

With how bad Infinite looks and runs they won’t do anything in 4 months to change it significantly.

Also there’s still a good chance the Series X will be the best place to play Cyberpunk, Assassin’s Creed and Dirt 5 on consoles. If I end up getting both new consoles, which is probably going to happen, I’ll find interesting stuff to play on them.

Yeah, the Art-Direction is so many steps back after what the've accomplished with 4 and 5. It's the classic green-purple-gray that I didn't even like back then but feels extremely outdated now. I know they want to go back to the roots but she should have made the look a bit more modern.

I mean, just saying, this is Halo 4:

And this is Halo 5:

And then there's Infinite...

It's okay, but I prefer the look of the other two by a mile.

Interesting video from Digital Foundry about Halo's lighting solution and how Raytracing might improve the overall visuals down the line:

I wish they'd just delay this on ship it with raytracing instead of making everyone wait for that update.

The lighting and lack of response from in-game objects is what sticks out. Lighting is flat and materials lack detail

Another thing which I don't get are those weird hexagonal columns all over Halo. There's probably a lore thing there with how the landscape is artificial but it's hard to see that they aren't maybe leaning on those constructs a bit to pad out the landscape.

See now if it wasn't a cross gen game then they maybe could have done a ray tracing only version and the work would have been much simpler and the results much more impressive.

BTW I've never played Halo 4 or 5 but that H4 shot looks like it's using a flat background, like a matte painting. Not that that's bad (looks way better than how FFVII used them)

It's a mix. The ship and rock are geometry, the rest is a painting if I remember that correctly. But my point was more about the visual style, colour schema and general art direction, not necessarily the technical background of it.

Also you should totally play that game.
