The Sexy Brutale

I'd head this game was good and i've had it on my sale watch list for a while. This week it was on sale so I bought it, started it and wish I'd bought it sooner.

Did anybody else play Gregory Horror Show on PS2? I know @DANGERMAN and I were fans, can't remember if anybody else got on board. Anyways, The Sexy Brutale follows a similar design. In this game you, a preacher named Boone, awake in a huge casino/hotel during the yearly social bash called "The Sexy Brutale" where mysterious and murderous things are afoot. The guests of the party are stuck in a 12 hour loop, yet you have control over time via your stopwatch. This allows you to sneak around, following guests and listening to their conversations, assemble knowledge and use it to try to save them from their grizzly fate.

There are grandfather type clocks scattered around the hotel and you can use these clocks as a starting point when you reset the time loop so you can start closer to an incident you want to investigate further as time is always of the essence. You have to find the key so as to wind these grandfather clocks up before you can use them though, it makes you work for any conveniences.

The only other thing I'll add is that each time you save a guest you gain their mask and the ability therein, I shant give any examples as the discovery of this game is all part of the joy.

You off start off not having a fucking clue whats going on, then you stumble across somebody's path, you follow, you listen, you pick up clues and you put them all together, you figure out where to be and at what time and it all comes together, you've saved the guest and it's back to not having a clue again. But the sense of achievement gained from the starting point to the conclusion is immense. It's actually exciting to see your plan come together and actually work.

There only seems to be one key guest to save at a time, at least so far, so it's not too overwhelming. I've only saved three (well. four but two are in one questline) so i've no idea how things will evolve but i really wanted to put up an impression because somebody else really needs to play this game. Well, from what i've played so far you all do.

I typed that first post quick whilst i was still on a bit of a buzz from playing but i was late for work, just edited a few mistakes, apologies.

Also, I forgot to say that you can never be in the same room as a guest, you can only ever peak at them from keyholes via an adjacent room. You can press the L trigger to "listen" and if there is someone in proximity you can hear them murmering to themselves. If there is someone in the next room your mask produces flames as a warning once you approach the door to said room. All the guests also wear masks, and if you happen to burst in to a room with a guest in the room goes black and red and the guest appears as only their mask, exhausting fumes and flames in a cool effect as they race toward you and you have to gtfo asap. It's always kind of scary.

The games aesthetic is a 1960's high society affair, reminiscent of Bioshock, especially with the masks but with much less madness. Well, a bit less.

One more thing, if you run out of time (eg the 12 hour loop reaches an end and resets naturally) or start the day again via your stopwatch you lose any items you have collected. You do keep any knowledge you have ascertained though, which is great if you are halfway through solving a guests routine, it's just any physical items you lose.

This game was for me. I'm not really expecting anyone to like it as much as I did but it hit all my buttons. The music and visuals assisted the great story telling to produce an amazing atmosphere, I especially enjoyed playing this at night with headphones on.

I've finished it now, got my little 100% completion poker chip sitting proundly upon the title screen. Finding all 52 playing cards was a trip with no in game check list. I had to scour everything in every room systematically till I found the last one I needed (damn you 3 of Spades). You collect guest invitations as well, 9 in total but two had me stumped so I had to look them up otherwise I was guide free.

I only had two critisisms. Firstly the fact it gets very glitchy when you open a door, probably 75% of the time the framerate drops completely. Secondly the puzzles themselves were a little too easy, there was room for a bit more complexity due to the size of the play area but I suppose it kept it from being frustrating.

I really enjoyed the story, it had me gripped and I got a little bonus ending after going back in and doing something after getting 100% which was just the icing on the cake. Behind Zelda for GOTY.

I think I’m gonna struggle with this.

I did the first guest, but I had a massive helping hand by already seeing the puzzle done on the Giant Bomb quick look.

The second go I just wandered aimlessly. This might be best played with another brain to help out.

Edit: did the second guest section. Didn’t solve it quite the way I expected to, in fact did it quite by accident just messing about.

Now it looks like I have to stop a suicide.

If you ever get stuck the simplist thing to do (0nce you've found the protagonists) is to follow them around and anyone involved in their plot. Just listen most of the time and remember your new abilities.

I have to say my one critisicm of this game was I found everything a little too simple to solve.

Finished. There’s a second hidden ending that I didn’t get but I read up on it and I prefer the proper ending.

I have to admit I had a guide that I used to push me in the right direction when I got stuck, which happened a fair bit. Luckily it was a pretty vague guide and didn’t spoil everything.

I loved the story, I’d like to see a film with that story. Done well, obviously.

I started this'll last night, I'm not sure I'll get time to finish it this week but I'd like to play a bit more of it.

It feels a bit unpolished in some ways. I solved a puzzle and the cut scene starter immediately, the ending of another didn't give me enough time to read the text, and as illdog said it hitches a bit when you go through a door

I did the 2nd guest(s) and like @Hendosolved it by accident. I ended up in the correct room, in doing so I'm pretty sure I saw a key moment for the next chapter. Anyway, I found the right room, which meant a quick trip down the corridor, then puzzle solved all without actually seeing what I was supposed to be stopping

As such I feel like I've not played enough to form any sort of opinion yet

I started a run to collect all the hidden cards and invitations but after I realised it doesn’t tell you which ones you have, I couldn’t be arsed.

Some technical hitches here and there, yeah, but really like the idea. I’d like to see them do another game in that style, a straight up sequel isn’t needed for story purposes though.

Remember when @Nag double dipped on some games and everyone called him a cunt? Well i hope I didn't cos I bought this on the PS4 having already had it on Xbox One. It was on sale and I had a moment of madness. I'm pretty sure I didn't Nag, achievements and trophies are fun.

Glad I did though because it's about 4 months or so later I really fancied another run through this, booted up the PS4 and started her up. 8 hours later bingo bango I got my first ever Platinum.

Despite having a massive backlog of games I've been playing old games I really like again. Mostly in re-release platform but I'm playing Mana (remake), just finished Okami (HD update) and now Sexual Brutalising for the second time. I fucking love this game. The visual style, sound effects and soundtrack just blend together to makle an experience that's nigh on perfection in my opinion. This and Okami just resonate on my frequency in way I can't articulate - I just love them both. I actually want to play through both games again and I just might.
