Far Cry 5' holds the fort at No.1, in an otherwise quiet week

After the storm that was raised last week with the launch of ‘Far Cry 5’ it’s all quiet this week as no new entries make it in to the Top 40. ‘Far Cry 5’ retains top spot.

There is also no change at No2 and No3 as ‘FIFA 18’ and ‘Sea of Thieves’ are both non-movers. The price drop on ‘Forza Motorsport 7’ continues to push it back up the chart, accelerating from No9 to No4 this week. Outside the Top 10, a retail promotion on ‘Star Wars Battlefront II’ has it re-enter the Top 40 at No16.

3 In A Row For Far Cry 5

16/Apr/2018

Another quiet week in terms of new releases and Ubisoft remain unchallenged with a third consecutive week at No1 for ‘Far Cry 5’.

In terms of recent Ubisoft games with more than 2 weeks at No1, Ubisoft’s ‘Ghost Recon: Wildlands’ from 2017 managed 4 weeks at No1 (2 weeks consecutive), whilst 2016’s ‘The Division’ racked up 4 consecutive weeks at No1. EA remain at No2 for a third week in a row with ‘FIFA 18’ and Nintendo climb 4 places to No3 with ‘Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’. Rockstar/Take 2 also climb 4 places at No4 with ‘GTA V’ and Microsoft’s ‘PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ remains at No5 for a third consecutive week. Microsoft’s ‘Sea of Thieves’ drops 3 places to No6 and Bethesda re-enter the Top 10 thanks to promotional activity around the wallet-friendly ‘Fallout 4’.

Quote

God of War on PS4 is the fastest selling title in the franchise' history.

It has sold over 35% more units in its first week than the previous best, 2010's God of War III.

And it has already overtaken the previous major Sony exclusive this year - Shadow of the Colossus.

The result is that the game is easily this week's No.1 (matching the success of God of War II and III), knocking Far Cry 5 down to No.2. Ubisoft's game had been No.1 for three weeks solid, and remains the biggest launch of the year so far. Of course, Far Cry 5 is available on two platforms - PS4 and Xbox One

NPD (US) March Sales Chart

Quote

Thanks to The NPD Group and Venturebeat for the breakdown.

Here are the numbers for March 2018:

Total: $1.316 billion (down 11 percent from $1.478 billion in March 2017)

Hardware: $331 million (down 32 percent from $485 million)

PC and console software: $613 million (down 10 percent from $682 million)

Accessories: $372 million (up 20 percent from $310 million)

SOFTWARE

“Far Cry 5 debuts as the top-selling title of March 2018 and instantly becomes the best-selling title of 2018,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. “Far Cry 5 set a new launch month sales record for the Far Cry franchise, with consumer spending on full-game sales nearly doubling that of previous franchise best, Far Cry 3. Publisher Ubisoft is the leading publisher in both March and 2018 year to date (January through March).”

Far Cry 5 swept the console charts, but it’s not the only new game that saw success last month. Microsoft and Rare’s co-op pirate simulator Sea of Thieves launched on March 20 and earned a No. 2 spot in the best-sellers list despite only rolling out to Xbox One and Windows 10. Its debut came after several closed-beta sessions that drummed up hype. More than a million players set sail on the open ocean within the first two days, crashing its servers at one point with all their plundering and pillaging.

“Sea of Thieves was the second best-selling game of March, and is the eighth best-selling game of 2018 year to date,” said Piscatella. “Sea of Thieves generated the highest launch month sales for any title produced by developer Rare since tracking by The NPD Group began in 1995.”

Along with Far Cry 5, other franchises also set launch month records. Sony’s MLB 18: The Show and Hal Laboratory’s Kirby: Star Allies both had the best-selling debuts in their series histories.

Kirby Star Allies has had the strongest debut month of sales in the U.S. in the franchises’ history, according to The NPD Group. The Switch side-scroller had a 90 percent better debut month than 2002’s Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland, which last held that distinction

HARDWARE
Compared to March 2017, consumers spent less on hardware last month — $331 million, down 32 percent from $485 million. But year to date, hardware-spending is at a high, generating $925 million so far in 2018. This was driven mainly by Microsoft’s Xbox One, though Sony’s PlayStation 4 remains the best-selling console in March and 2018. The Nintendo Switch 32GB with red and blue Joycon controllers was the best-selling hardware in March and 2018.

While folks weren’t spending as much on consoles last month, accessories saw an uptick thanks to the popularity of multiplayer games like certain wildly popular battle royale hits.

UK Chart, week ending May 5th

    Quote

Another quiet week for the physical games market, with just a single new release in the Top 40.

That belongs to the excellent Nintendo Switch platformer Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, which debuts at No.2. We say debuts, it's technically a re-entry as the game is a port of an equally excellent Wii U game. Yet considering the Wii U version only sold 44 units this week, we're going to class it as a standalone title.

In just one week, the Switch version of the game already accounts for nearly 17% of the total number of copies the game has sold in the UK (physical units only). Week one sales of the Switch version were 53.7% higher than week one sales of the Wii U version (although Switch does have a considerably higher install base).

The game originally launched on Wii U in February 2014 and is the fifth game in the Donkey Kong Country series, which first began on the SNES in 1994.

That means it is a third consecutive week at the top for PS4 exclusive God of War. The game's sales fell 56% week-on-week, yet it retains the top sport comfortably. It's the first time since The Last of Us: Remastered in July 2014 that a Sony published title has scored three consecutive weeks at No.1.

With nothing major coming to market this week, there's a good chance that the action game will secure a fourth straight No.1.

There are five first party games in the Top Ten this week (six in the Top 11) with PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8: Deluxe joining the aforementioned two.

In fact, expect first party titles to dominate the month, with Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition (Nintendo), State of Decay 2 (Microsoft) and Detroit: Beyond Human (PlayStation) all set to arrive during May.

There were a few notable movers this week. The latest Avengers movie has done the trick for LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2, which rises to No.6 following a 26% sales increase. While a bit of price activity on Microsoft's inventive new IP Sea of Thieves sees the game rise to No.11 with a 63% sales uptick.

Last week's Nintendo Labo products meanwhile take a tumble. The Variety Pack drops from No.3 to No.13 with a 62% sales slide, while the Robot kit has vanished from the Top 40 entirely.

And seeing as it is such a rare sight, GTA V falls out of the boxed Top Ten this week to No.12 (although sales did actually increase 2% week-on-week).

Here is the UKIE/GfK Top Ten for the week ending May 5th.

1 (1) GOD OF WAR (SONY COMPUTER ENT.)

2 (RE) DONKEY KONG COUNTRY TROPICAL FREEZE (NINTENDO)

Hard to say really..Sort of feels like Nintendo just made it just because. I cant imagine they thought it would take over the world, but at the same time its one of those things that could sell really well, but I find it hard to imagine they made it thinking it would be a huge money maker. To be honest thats hows I feel about everything Nintendo do lately though.

I dont agree, firstly its not like amiibo arent still selling, and secondly every single Pokemon toy that sells is a Nintendo product. Once they bring out a switch Pokemon game they will be able to pretty much release every single pokemon as amiibo.

PlayStation 4 exclusive God of War finishes atop the UK physical sales chart for the fourth week in a row this week, with Nintendo's Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze remaining at No.2. The chart for the week ending May 12 sees little change across the board, as Far Cry 5 and FIFA 18 keep their respective No.3 and No.4 positions.

Only one new game entered the chart this week: Conan Exiles, now out of early access, launches in full at No.13. Elsewhere, Assassin's Creed Origins re-enters the top 10 at No.9, as does Destiny 2 at No.10.

Sony’s PS4 ‘God of War’ takes a fifth consecutive week at No1 – just one more No1 will see it equal the 6 consecutive weeks for Sony’s ‘The Last of Us’ on PS3 (starting week 24, 2013).

There are around 17 core titles across 9 retailers being promoted throughout this month under the ‘LetsPlayMay’ campaign, but EA’s ‘FIFA 18’, although not part of this campaign, benefits from massive retail promotion to rise 2 places to No2. So Nintendo’s ‘Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition’ for Switch has to settle for a No3 debut – this is the same position the original ‘Hyrule Warriors’ on WiiU debuted back in week 38/2014. In terms of the aforementioned ‘LetsPlayMay’ campaign there are 13 titles in the Top 40 this week and 4 within the Top 10 – Warner’s ‘Lego Marvel Superheroes 2’ (No6), Ubisoft’s ‘Assassins Creed Origins’ (No7), Rockstar/Take 2’s ‘GTA V’ (No9) and Activision’s ‘Call of Duty WWII’ (No10). There are also a couple of Koch-distributed Atlus titles debuting this week, with ‘Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey Redux’ for 3DS debuting at No31 and ‘Dragon’s Crown Pro’ for PS4 debuting at No33.

‘Detroit: Become Human' becomes the 10th PlayStation exclusive to hit No.1 this year

There are three new entries in the Top 3 this week, led by Sony’s ‘Detroit: Become Human’ which is the 10th different PlayStation exclusive title to reach No1 so far this year. Microsoft’s new format exclusive ‘State of Decay 2’ has to settle for a debut at No2, while ‘Dark Souls Remastered’ enters at No3.

The retailer promotion on ‘FIFA 18’ continues this week – despite slipping 2 places to No4, sales rise by 59%. God of War’s five week run at the top is over as it falls to No5, ahead of ‘Far Cry 5’ at No6 and a heavily price promoted ‘Overwatch: Game of the Year Edition’ which bounces from No40 to No7, boosted by some retailers dropping it to £15. There is one other new title to make the Top 40 this week: ‘Space Hulk Deathwing’ debuting at No19.

Detroit sells 1 million copies in 2 weeks.

Quantic Dream enjoys its best start

The game Detroit: Become Human has already attracted 1 million buyers, according to the French studio. It was developed in four years, in Paris.

Quantic Dream prides itself on never following up on its video games and preferring to create totally new worlds. On the other hand, their successes have an air of déjà-vu. "We have just passed the million mark sold for Detroit: Become Human, two weeks after the release of the game, said Guillaume de Fondaumiere, the deputy CEO of the French independent studio. This is clearly our best start. The previous title of this flagship of narrative video games, Heavy Rain, in 2014, took five weeks to break the milestone of one million copies. In total, it attracted 5.5 million players.

Only available on Playstation 4, the commercial performance of the game must be compared with other titles reserved for the Japanese console. In this category, Quantic's game does not compete with the recent God of War by Santa Monica studio and its 3.1 million sales in three days. But the multiple-ending scenario imagined by Quantic Dream founder and creative star David Cage is also more demanding.

Developed in four years in the twentieth arrondissement of Paris, Detroit: Become Human has been pre-funded by Sony. The partnership between Quantic Dream and the manufacturer of the PS4 has been renewed with each new game for twelve years. Discussions are underway for the studio's next project, which won't come out until several years.

"Our revenue depends on Sony's advances and our profitability (depends on) the success of our games," says Guillaume de Fondaumière. He claims 10 million euros in annual revenue. His company has 115 employees on permanent contracts and at certain stages of the development of the game, more than fifty professionals in fixed-term contracts.

Vampyr Knocks FIFA Off Top Spot

‘Vampyr’ sinks its teeth in to top spot of the All Formats Chart giving French publisher Focus Home Interactive their first ever All Formats No1.

It is also the third new original IP to top the chart so far this year, after ‘Detroit: Become Human’ two weeks ago and ‘Sea of Thieves’ back in week 12. ‘FIFA 18’ only just misses out on another week at No1, slipping one place to No2 ahead of ‘God of War’ which climbs one place to No3, boosted by Sony’s “Days of Play” promotion. Other titles benefiting from retailers matching “Days of Play” discounts include ‘Gran Turismo: Sport’ at No17 and ‘Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition’ at No25. ‘The Elder Scrolls Online: Summerset’ enters the chart for the first time at No26 thanks to XB1 and PS4 launches with the PC version having come out 2 weeks ago. There are debuts at No34 for ‘Onrush’ from Codemasters and at No40 for ‘MotoGP 18’ from Milestone.

Nintendo serves 'Mario Tennis Aces’ straight to No1

Nintendo have 2 new entries into the Top 40 All Formats Chart with ‘Mario Tennis Aces’ claiming the No1 spot and ‘Minecraft’ debuting in at No21.

Last week’s No1 ‘God of War’ slips down 2 places to No3, while Fifa 18 holds firm at No2. Another Nintendo Switch title debuts in the Top 40 at No26 with Microids/Maximum Games’ ‘Flashback: Collectors Edition’ as it marks the 25th Anniversary of the original game that came out on Amiga all the way back in 1992. ‘1-2 Switch’ re-enters the charts at No35 which means there are 8 Switch only titles in the Top 40.
