Ni No Kuni (PS3)

I finished the main story with a playtime of around 65 hours. I really enjoyed it, its a beautiful laid-back JRPG with some fun writing and nice localization.

I didn't get too involved with capturing all the pokemon dudes. I found a few groups I liked and mostly stuck with them.

There's a whole load of quests that opened up after completion, I'll go back and do some of the legendary bounty hunts, but I don't feel a need to go looking for more familiars or doing the regular errands.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3)

What with this coming up in the critical acclaim thread and an upcoming Cane & Rinse episode, I decided to play through again to see how my memory of playing it in 2011 matched up to the reality.

Apart from mis-remembering a couple of things from the first as happening in 2, it's pretty much as I recall. It still holds up, and I had a lot of fun playing through again. I love the locations, the gorgeous ancient ruins housing ridiculous impossible machinery are awesome.

The shooting does still go on a couple of waves too long in some places. Those big blue dudes are still ridiculous bullet sponges but go down in 1-2 shots from a crossbow for some reason, but you only fight them a couple of times. I thought it was more.

(Using the swipe typing on my phone I wrote 'the critical Alan thread' instead of critical acclaim. That would be a great thread title)

I blasted through it real quick, and I'd say a quarter of it I was pretty drunk so I don't really know how I feel about it entirely... well, I know I liked it but I mean in relation to the other games. I don't think it was a s good as GoW2.

A lovely little game. Although not especially challenging, I loved the script and narration. And the music is awesome. http://thomaswasalone.bandcamp.com/

I've just done it and still processing it. Slow start, looks amazing, some awesome action moments, misanthropic as fuck story and not particularly focused.

But good overall. I give it a thumb up.

No idea when I last posted this so here is my list and I will talk about my most recent completed game.

Darksiders 2! It was decent, that is about all. I was glad when it ended and I don't see myself going back to the side quests, at least not for a while. Some of it was just really long winded for the sake of it, some of the puzzles were fiddly to solve, the tools you had to solve puzzles often were not explained. The loot in the game was generally useless and the currency was completely useless. I ended with 1.5 million gilt because there was just nothing decent to spend it on.

Saying that, the combat was fun and with a few frustrating exception the platforming was entertaining. There were a couple of bits where Death just couldn't climb up something because the developers wanted me to go a different way. They didn't even try to hide it. The story was good as well, I love all that angels, demons and the apocalypse shit. In general it was an entertaining 20ish hours.

I was expecting something a bit special to be honest. When the studio closed down people were like, "noooo, they were so talented!" and the studio was like, "man, the third game was going to be the best thing ever and we are making this game and after two months of development it is already better than EVERY OTHER GAME!" I feel all that talk was somewhat unwarranted. Same response to people dying, lets pretend they were amazing. Still a shame they lost their jobs.

And I tried to put in spoiler tags but it came out all fucked up. Next time.

Penny Arcade's on the Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness: Episode 3 (PC)

This was a fun little retro style RPG, with lots of funny touches and an enjoyably silly LoveCraft-y storyline.

Although, after playing this and Ni No Kuni recently, it seems like JRPGs make me sleepy. I nearly dozed off with the controller in my hand a couple of times. I went through a stage like that with driving games a few years ago. I actually fell asleep during a race in Forza one time.

DLC Quest: Live Freemium or Die (Xbox Indie)

Follow up to the surprisingly fun DLC quest. Obviously the joke doesnt have the same impact as last time, but this is still charming and fun to play, and has its own jokes poking fun at patches, in-game ads, internet memes, consumable items.

I googled it to make sure I was getting the title right and found a user review on Destructoid which said:

I hadn't laughed so hard since I first saw Austin Powers 3 many years ago

Which is a terribly mean thing to say about such a nice game.

Well worth the 80 points.

Tekken Revolution

Dust: An Elysian Tail

Tekken was over in about 5 minutes which is fine by me, stupid fighting games. Dust was much longer, took about 9 hours, I enjoyed about 6 of them. As a one man project it is very impressive but at times it just wasn't a lot of fun. The combat was shallow but flashy and the story and voice acting were atrocious. I could probably go on at great length about what I didn't like but I think that would be unfair. In the end it is an alright Castlevania type game with a lot of room for improvement.
