GI.Biz: Nintendo Switch sales up 39% across Europe in May | European Monthly ChartsLatest GSD figures show very strong month for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Hogwarts Legacy

Quote

Sales of video games, hardware and accessories surged across Europe last month, driven by the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Nearly 10.6 million digital and physical games were sold across Europe last month, the latest GSD data reveals.

This covers all retail games released in major European markets, plus digital games from most AAA publishers in all European territories.

It's a 33% jump in sales over the same period in May 2022, and that's almost entirely down The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which is the runaway success of the month, selling more than 2.5x the second placed game: Hogwarts Legacy.

After just three weeks on sale, Zelda is already the third best-selling game of the year across Europe, behind EA's FIFA 23 and Warner Bros' Hogwarts Legacy. It's worth noting that Nintendo does not share digital download data with the charts, whereas EA and Warner Bros, do. If we look purely at physical retail sales, Zelda is already the No.1 game of the year across European markets.

The second-placed game is Hogwarts Legacy, which posted a 321% jump in sales month-on-month due to the release of the PS4 and Xbox One version of the game. For May, 71.5% of Hogwarts sales were on PS4, and 11.7% came on Xbox One. The remainder were on current generation systems and PC.

The only other new releases in the Top 20 is Lego 2K Drive, which is down at No.19.

Switch reclaims top spot from PlayStation as hardware jumps 40%

Nintendo Switch overtook PS5 in May to become Europe's No.1 console once again, driven by the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Switch sales across Europe are up over 39% compared with May last year. PS5 had to settle for No.2, but it remains a strong force across Europe, and sales for PS5 are up 81% compared with May 2022.

Xbox Series S and X are in third position, with sales down 16% over May last year.

Overall, 429,000 games consoles were sold across tracked European markets last year, that's a rise of 40% over the year before (notable missing countries include Germany and UK, for UK hardware data, click here).

The Zelda Amiibo is the fifth biggest accessory

Over in peripherals and add-on products, 1.3 million of accessories and toys-to-life figures were sold across Europe last month, which is up 30% year-on-year.

The PS5 DualSense remains No.1, ahead of the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. The Switch pad jumped 530% in sales following the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and there was also a special edition Zelda Pro Controller, which sold out globally last month.

Speaking of Zelda, the Tears of the Kingdom Amiibo, which was released alongside the game, was the fifth best-selling accessory of the month. The Nintendo Switch OLED Carry Case also debuts at No.10, following the release of a Zelda version.

Finally, in terms of points cards and wallets, 1.35 million of these items were sold last month, which is up 2.7% over May 2022. The PlayStation Store Wallet Top-Up Card remains No.1.

Diablo 4 ends Zelda's four-week stay at No.1 | UK Boxed Charts

PlayStation games jump up the charts after a week of sales promotions

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has finally lost its No.1 status in the UK Boxed Charts.

At four weeks, it is the longest time a game in the series has held the top spot. The Nintendo Switch release saw sales fall 36% over the week before.

That means the new No.1 is Activision Blizzard's Diablo 4. The game didn't sell particularly big numbers at boxed retail, and its launch week sits well behind Zelda, Hogwarts Legacy, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Resident Evil 4 and Dead Island 2. However, as a game that's particularly popular on PC, the vast majority of sales will be via digital download stores. We will receive the digital data later in the week.

In fact, only the console versions received a boxed release, and 67% of physical sales came on PS5, 27% on Xbox Series S and X and 8% on PS4.

Last week's biggest new game was Street Fighter 6, and it slips to No.5 this week with a relatively small 48% drop in sales.

Elsewhere, Hogwarts Legacy rises to No.3 despite a 27% drop in sales week-on-week. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe is up a place to No.4, with sales down 23% over the week prior. FIFA 23 drops out of the Top Five to No.6, with sales down 50%. This coincides with the end of the 2022/2023 football season.

Meanwhile, sales activity on PlayStation games, consoles and bundles have boosted sales of its big games, including first-party titles. God of War Ragnarok is up four places to No.7 (sales up 67%), Gran Turismo 7 is at No.9 (sales up 66%) and Spider-Man: Miles Morales has jumped 23 spots to No.16 (up 95%).

UK Chart Roundup (Week 25 2023)

Final Fantasy 16 is the fifth biggest UK boxed launch of 2023 (so far) | UK Boxed Charts

But it's a much smaller launch for physical stores compared with 2016's Final Fantasy 15

Final Fantasy 16 comfortably debuts at No.1 in the UK boxed charts.

It's not a huge boxed launch for the iconic franchise, with sales 74% lower than the boxed release of Final Fantasy 15 from 2016. Of course, Final Fantasy 16 is a PS5 exclusive, whereas its predecessor was on both PS4 and Xbox One. The previous game also launched at a time when the install base for PS4 was higher than the current install base of PS5.

But the biggest reason for the drop will be the acceleration of digital since 2016. When the digital data comes in, the fall compared with 15 will be significantly less severe.

Final Fantasy 16 is the fifth fastest-selling boxed game of the year (so far), behind The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Hogwarts Legacy, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and the remake of Resident Evil 4.

The arrival of the Square Enix game means that Zelda drops to No.2 once again, with sales down 35% week-on-week.

There are other new games in the charts. Sonic Origins Plus debuts at No.3. The Sega game's boxed release did best on Switch (52% of sales), followed by PS5 (29%), Xbox Series X and S (11%) and then PS4 (9%). This is not surprising, as Switch typically performs better in the physical market than the digital market, and Xbox's digital sales share is usually higher than both PlayStation and Switch.

Elsewhere, Aliens: Dark Descent from Focus Home Interactive debuts at No.11 and Crash Team Rumble crosses the finishing line at No.15.

In terms of more recent titles, F1 2023 is down to No.5 with a 51% sales drop, Street Fighter 6 falls out of the Top Ten to No.21 with a 36% dip in sales week-on-week, while Diablo 4 is down to No.8 after a 37% sales tumble.

Finally, Forspoken -- the other Square Enix PS5 exclusive released this year -- is up to No.12 with a 46% rise in sales week-on-week. Its the third consecutive week of sales increases for the game.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom's reign continues | UK Boxed Charts

NIS America's The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie was the only new entry this week

It's another week at No.1 in the UK physical charts for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Despite a 20% drop in sales week-on-week, Nintendo's hit remained at the top for the second week running, GfK reported.

Following its launch on May 12, Tears of the Kingdom remained at the top for four weeks, until Diablo 4's release. It then reclaimed No.1 briefly until Final Fantasy 16 launched but was back again last week.

Zelda will likely continue to dominate the charts on and off throughout the summer – Pikmin 4 (due next week) could get for a brief spell at the top but with many of the games on other consoles now sold digitally, we can overall expect Nintendo titles to dominate the physical charts this year.

There was only one new entry in the UK boxed charts this week, NIS America's The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie, which debuted at No.22.

Elsewhere, FIFA 23 made it back to No.2 with a 30% increase in sales. Metroid Prime Remastered re-entered the charts at No.13 thanks to a 222% surge in sales, and so did WWE 2K23 at No.13, with sales up 183% week-on-week. All three benefitted from retail promotions.

Circana (US) May 2023 Sales Data

Software

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was the best-selling game of May 2023, instantly becoming the #2 best-selling title of 2023 year-to-date, despite only physical sales from Nintendo being included in the best-selling titles charts.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild returned to the top 20 monthly chart in May, placing 13th after finishing April at #28.

“Spend trends in May were down slightly (-2%) compared to April. Pokémon GO moved back into the top ten games (by consumer spend) in May despite the price hikes to certain in-app purchases over the past few months,” said Abraham Yousef of Sensor Tower.

Hardware

Video game hardware spending increased 56% vs YA, to $338M. This is the highest VG hardware spend for a May month since the $427M reached in May 2008. Double-digit percentage growth in both PlayStation 5 and Switch dollar sales again offset declines on other platforms.

Switch was the best-selling hardware platform in both unit and dollar sales during May 2023. Consumer spending on Switch hardware reached an all-time May high for the platform, while unit sales were 2nd highest ever for the platform in a May month, trailing only May 2020.

PlayStation 5 continues to lead the 2023 hardware market across both units and dollars.

May U.S. video game market quick takes: - Zelda fueled May growth across all segments (HW, SW, ACC) - Software getting more top heavy, could be tough sledding for games not at top of charts - Sub growth continues to slow - Expecting growth to continue in June

GI.Biz: 82% of Street Fighter, Final Fantasy, Diablo and F1 sales were digital | UK Monthly ChartsPS5 sales jump after retail price cutting

Quote

Three million digital and physical video games were sold in the UK last month.

The latest GSD data shows that game sales are up 7%, which is a modest result considering the number of big releases in June compared with the same period last year.

Diablo 4 obliterated all competition to be the clear No.1 best-selling game in June.

It is actually the second fastest-selling game of the year after four weeks, behind Hogwarts Legacy. For those wondering 'what about Zelda?' Nintendo doesn't share its digital data with the GSD charts, which means we only have the game's physical sales to go on. In terms of the first four weeks, Zelda is tracking slightly behind Diablo, but that will likely be different if digital data was available for Nintendo's hit game.

57% of Diablo 4's sales were on PC. The remaining 43% of sales came on PS5, Xbox Series S and X and PS4.

Second place belongs to Final Fantasy 16. The Square Enix title's opening two weeks sales are 36% lower than the last major Final Fantasy game, which was Final Fantasy 7: Remake in April 2020.

These results appear to be reflected in other markets, too. It seems like a disappointment, but Square Enix did celebrate the three million global sales milestone, which suggests it is satisfied with the result. There are a few factors to consider, including FF16's PS5 exclusivity, the congested release window and the fact the title is a departure from previous games in the series. The publisher has also been pushing its next major Final Fantasy release, Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, which is due early next year.

The third game in the charts is also a new release in F1 23. The first three weeks for the EA game are a significant drop on last year's racing title, with sales down 49%. As a franchise, F1's performance often fluctuates depending on the interest in the current F1 season.

Interestingly, F1 sold best on Xbox platforms, with Xbox Series S and X accounting for 48.5% of sales. PS5 accounted for 47.6%, and the remainder was on PS4 and PC.

The final new release in the charts is Street Fighter 6 at No.8. Capcom's game continues to be popular on PlayStation, with PS5 accounting for just over 52% of sales. PC accounted for 23% of sales, Xbox Series S and X with just over 17% and PS4 with more than 7%.

Across the these four new releases, 82% of sales were via digital stores. The game with the highest digital share was Diablo 4, while Final Fantasy 16 had the lowest, which will be partially due to the platforms they’re on – Diablo is a major PC title, which is an almost 100% digital platform, while Final Fantasy 16 is a PS5 title, which still has a strong physical retail business.

The best-selling physical game of the week remains The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for the second consecutive month.

PS5 price cutting boosts console sales

Video game console sales rose 15% in June, to 110,000 consoles sold (GfK panel data).

PS5 is back as the top-selling console, with sales up 43% over May. This is due to a surge in sales of the standard PS5 bundled with God of War Ragnarok, which was reduced from £520 to £460 by retailers.

Nintendo Switch is down to No.2, with sales dropping 20%. The Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Special Edition console went from being the No.1 Switch console in April and May, to No.3 in June. It was a strong month for Xbox Series S and X (especially Series X). The platform is still in third place overall, but sales are up 31% month-on-month.

Year-to-date, 722,000 games consoles have been sold, a rise of 11% on the year before. This is due to the PS5, which has seen sales grow 66% year-on-year. Nintendo Switch sales are down 10% year-to-date, while Xbox sales are down 23%.

Finally, over in accessories we have a new No.1 for the first time in a while. The White PS5 DualSense controller is no-longer top (it's No.2), and instead it's the Midnight Black version at No.1. This is due to the variant coming back in stock for the whole month.

The highest charting new accessory is the Starfield Limited Edition Xbox controller, which comes in at No.5.

Overall, 547,000 add-on products were sold, a rise of 24% over May but down 6.3% over June last year.

I'm now convinced that physical sales are so poor that it was Blakey buying a single copy of Gollum that propelled it back into the charts at no 36......

This is the week before last's charts, so unfortunately my copy hasn't made a dent (yet) lol.

Price drops work wonders for putting games back in the charts though that's for sure haha.

GI.Biz: GSD July 2023 UK Monthly Chart

Quote

Xbox backwards compatibility sends old Call of Duty games back into the Top Five | UK Monthly Charts

GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 leap up due to summer sales

2009's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and 2012's Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 were two of the best-selling video games in the UK last month.

Both games had their matchmaking fixed on Xbox platforms, and were also discounted in the Xbox Ultimate Game Sale, which sent Modern Warfare 2 to No.5, while Black Ops 2 returns at No.4.

Black Ops 2 was on sale for £11.99 and Modern Warfare 2 could be picked up for £12.49.

Both Xbox and PlayStation ran aggressive digital game sales, which have transformed the chart. Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 jumped up to No.2 and No.3 respectively. Both of Rockstar's games were discounted on all Xbox and PlayStation platforms, with the PS4 versions on sale for under £15.

But it was FIFA 23 that was No.1 for the month.

In total, 2.36 million digital and physical AAA video games were sold in the UK during July, up 31% over the year before.

1.66 million games were sold via digital download stores (up 40% year-on-year), while 701,000 were sold via physical outlets (up 12%).

The highest charting game that was actually released in 2023 was Hogwarts Legacy in sixth position.

In terms of new game released in July, the highest charting title is Pikmin 4 at No.23. Nintendo doesn't share digital sales with the charts, so it may be that the game would have charted higher if we knew the download figures. If we just look at physical sales for the month, Pikmin 4 was the fifth best-selling game.

All software data is courtesy of GSD.

Over in hardware, and sales of games consoles in July dropped 7% month-on-month in the UK, according to GfK panel data. However, compared with July 2022, sales are actually up 7%.

PlayStation 5 remains the market leading format, with sales once again driven by pricing activity on the standard version of the console. PS5 sold very slightly more units in July than it did in June. By the end of July, PS5 sales are up 68% compared with the same period last year. That's already jumped further in August.

The same isn't true for Nintendo Switch, which saw sales slide 15% in July compared with the month before. Year-to-date, Switch sales are down 8.5% for the first seven months of the year.

In third position is Xbox Series S and X. Microsoft's console saw sales tumble 12% in July compared with June. So far this year, Xbox console sales are down 22.8%.

As an aside, sales of PS4 are up 331% so far this year.

Finally, nearly 550,000 accessores were sold in the UK during July, a drop of 3% over June and 3% over July last year.

The charts are dominated by Sony DualSense controllers. The White edition retakes No.1 from the Black version, while Starlight Blue rises 14 places to No.18 and Grey Camo jumps five places to No.5. The Cosmic Red edition also jumped 11 positions to No.20. The controllers have benefitted from strong sales of PS5, plus some pricing activity at major retailers. The rest of the Top Ten is made up of Xbox controllers and Turtle Beach headsets, with Ear Force 50X at No.7 and Ear Force 50P at No.10.

PS5 games were once again in control of the UK boxed charts this week, thanks to summer sales and price bundling.

GfK's report showed that four of the Top Ten best-selling boxed games saw sales comfortably led by their PS5 edition, plus PlayStation exclusive Gran Turismo rounded off the charts at No.10.

The top three remain the same as last week, with Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga leading the charts, despite a 32% drop in sales. The PS5 edition sold almost double that of the next biggest SKU, which was the Nintendo Switch.

FIFA 23 remained at No.2 with a 33% decrease in sales week-on-week — interestingly, this was the only third-party game to sell more on Switch this week than any other format, followed by the PS4 edition.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe followed at No.3, having experienced a 24% decrease in sales, with Zelda up to No.4, weathering a 19% decline.

Grand Theft Auto 5 jumped five places to No.5, driven by a 6% increase in sales — 60% of this week's sales were on PS5.

Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate re-entered the Top Ten at No.9 due to a price promotion, with a 5% decrease in week-on-week sales.

Meanwhile, God of War: Ragnarök dropped out of the Top Ten this week moving from No.6 to No.14 due to a 50% decrease in sales. In contrast, Red Dead Redemption 2 climbed from No.36 to No.16, having benefited from a 60% sales increase.

Elsewhere, new release Atlas Fallen debuted at No.22 in the UK boxed charts this week.

Three games rejoined the lower end of the charts, with Pokemon Scarlet at No.37, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at No.38, and Five Nights At Freddy's Security Breach at No.39.

GI.biz: Digital summer sales propels GTA 5 back to No.1 across Europe | July 2023 European Monthly ChartsThe highest charting new game was Pikmin 4 at No.11

Quote

11.6 million console and PC games were sold in July across Europe, up 34% over the same period in 2022.

Digital downloads represented nearly 7.9 million of that (up 60%), while physical was 3.75 million (up 0.2%).

This is according to GSD data, which includes digital sales from most AAA games publishers in every European country. It also includes physical sales of games in the big European markets. For the full breakdown of countries and publishers, see bottom of the article.

Major summer promotions on PlayStation and Xbox have transformed the charts, with Grand Theft Auto 5 back at No.1 and Red Dead Redemption 2 at No.3. Both Rockstar games were discounted on console last month, particularly on PlayStation formats.

The highest charting new game was Nintendo Switch exclusive Pikmin 4 at No.11 (please note, Nintendo first-party games do not include digital download figures). It may not look like a particularly strong debut, but for the first two weeks on the market, Pikmin 4 sales are up 81% compared with what Pikmin 3: Deluxe managed in October 2020.

In terms of hardware, 493,000 games consoles were sold across tracked European countries, which is 62.5% up over July 2022 but 2% down compared with June this year. Tracked markets are missing two key territories in Germany and the UK. UK hardware figures for July can be found here.

PS5 comfortably led the month in Europe, with console sales up 244% over July last year. There were strong price promotions on PS5 in July, and as a result sales were also up 24% over June. Overall, year-to-date PS5 sales are up 203% across the tracked territories.

Nintendo Switch finished the month in second place, with sales down 9% compared with July 2022. Year-to-date, Nintendo Switch sales are flat compared with 2022.
