UK Chart Roundup (Week 44 2021)

Quote

Call of Duty: Vanguard is No.1 in the UK boxed charts, comfortably ending FIFA 22's lengthy spell at the top.

Activision's shooter primarily sold on PlayStation platforms, with PS5 accounting for 41% of sales, PS4 29%, Xbox One 19% and Xbox Series X and S 11%.

Call of Duty, like FIFA before it, was historically a powerhouse sales force at UK retail, often selling in excess of a million copies in a box. Today, it's primarily a digital game and that is accelerating. We don't have the digital sales figures yet, but physical sales are down 23% over last year's game.

In 2020, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War had physical launch sales fall 64% over the previous year's entry (Modern Warfare). But digital accelerated by 39%, so we can't draw any conclusions on Vanguard's UK performance just yet.

Call of Duty is the big one, but there were a few other new games in the charts this week. Fortnite Minty Legends Pack lands at No.9 (33% of sales on Nintendo Switch, 24% PS4, 24% Xbox and 19% PS5). Just Dance 2022 slides in at No.11 (88% of sales on Nintendo Switch), and coming in at No.40 is Fast & Furious: Spy Racers - Rise of Shifter.

Last week's No.2 was Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, which falls to No.6 after a 64% sales drop week-on-week. Mario Party Superstars, which also launched last week, holds No.3 position after only a small sales decrease of 18%. Meanwhile, Riders Republic from Ubisoft drops eight places to No.16 after a 48% sales slip.

It's overall a strong week for Switch, driven by improved hardware sales, which has seen Mario Kart 8: Deluxe rise 30% in sales, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons sales increase 14%.

But it was another week of good PS5 stock levels, which means Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales jumps 12 places to No.5 after a 342% sales jump. Immortals: Fenyx Rising returns to the charts at No.12 after a 652% sales rise. This was the result of some price discounting, but also a PS5 bundle at retailer ShopTo.

You need to look at US charts to know if the game is doing well. UK charts are only useful as an indictor for how well a game will do in the US as the trends are the same, which also applies to week 1 only.

I don't know how to find US sales figures, though. Maybe mega Sonic Mania hater Blakey will know.

Does that seem like a shit performance by Guardians or not

I mean Miles Morales is beating it and that game is a year old

I don't think it has done particularly well but it had far less money spent on its marketing than something like Avengers last year, so likely sales targets will probably be quite a bit lower. As always there's the caveat to these charts that they don't include digital data.

Miles Morales is going to be one of those kinds of evergreen games throughout the first 2-3 years of the Generation, as it's pretty much 'the' game folks pick up when they get their PS5s.

US charts are in this thread, but they don't come out weekly like in the UK, they are released monthly, so we only have the September data for now (listed a little further back in this thread). October sales data should be released around the end of next week so we should get a better idea of how its done worldwide then.

UK Chart Roundup (Week 46 2021)

Quote

It's another blockbuster launch for Pokémon this week, with Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl taking the top two positions in the UK charts.

The remakes of the classic DS titles are comfortably the biggest Switch game launches of the year, beating Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury -- in fact, Brilliant Diamond achieves that alone, without even counting Pearl sales. Brilliant Diamond takes the No.1 position, followed by Shining Pearl at No.2, while the double pack featuring both games lands at No.9.

The Pokémon games combined are the second biggest boxed game launch of the year, behind FIFA 22 but ahead of Call of Duty: Vanguard.

Compared with other mainline Pokémon releases on Switch, launch sales are 26% down over Sword and Shield, which were the big new Pokémon games released in November 2019. Sales are up 13% over the Let's Go Eevee and Pikachu games, which were released back in November 2018.

Coming in at No.3 position is EA's new Battlefield 2042. The game's launch sales are 59% down compared with the launch of 2018's Battlefield 5. However, download figures are not in yet, and the digital marketplace has accelerated significantly over the last three years. We'll have a better idea of how Battlefield performed at the end of the week.

In terms of physical sales, the game unsurprisingly sold best on PlayStation platforms. 50% on PS5, 20% on PS4, Xbox One claimed 17% share and Xbox Series S and X took the remaining 13%. A few things to note here. The Xbox platforms skew more heavily digital than PlayStation's devices, but also Halo: Infinite's free multiplayer mode was released last week on Xbox, which will have competed with Battlefield.

That means Call of Duty: Vanguard's two-week stay at the top of the charts has come to an end. Activision's game slips to No.4, with sales down 37% week-on-week.

Elsewhere, more PS5 stock came to UK stores last week, which has boosted sales of PS5 exclusives. Spider-Man: Miles Morales is up from No.14 to No.6 after a 366% sales increase. The game featured heavily in PS5 bundles last week, and was also discounted as part of early Black Friday promotions.

Speaking of early Black Friday deals, Ubisoft was very active last week. Far Cry 6 has risen three places to No.8 after an 180% sales increase, Just Dance 2022 is up five places to No.10 after a 232% sales spike, Riders Republic has gone to No.14 after a 169% sales rise, and Assassin's Creed Valhalla re-entered the boxed charts at No.15 after a 462% sales jump. All four games features heavily in pre-Black Friday deals.

Last week's big new release, Forza Horizon 5, has fallen 12 places to No.16 after a 56% sales drop. Meanwhile, Jurassic World: Evolution 2 has tumbled from No.6 to No.23 after a 66% sales slide. The other new game of last week, Switch exclusive Shin Megami Tensei 5, has dropped out of the charts altogether.

There were a handful of other new boxed releases this week. Nerf Legends debuts at No.18 and Kena: Bridge of Spirits is at No.24.

UK Chart Roundup (Week 47 2021)

Quote

Mario Kart 8: Deluxe was the No.1 boxed game in the UK last week, driven by deals around the Nintendo Switch console over Black Friday.

The Switch title, which has sold over two million copies in the UK, jumped six places following a 567% jump in sales week-on-week. There was a special Switch Black Friday console bundle featuring Mario Kart 8.

That means last week's No.1, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond, drops five places to No.6 after a 57% drop in sales week-on-week. Its counterpart, Pokémon Shining Pearl, drops from No.2 to No.11 after a 58% tumble in sales. If both games were combined, they would together be at No.3 in the charts.

This chart only factors in physical sales, it does not count digital download figures.

As Black Friday weeks go, it was a relatively weak one by physical game sales standards. Black Friday boxed game sales in the UK are down 10% compared with the same period in 2020, which means 100,000 fewer boxed games were sold this year than last year.

The second biggest game of Black Friday was FIFA 22, which saw a 145% jump in sales, followed by Minecraft on Switch, which had a 258% sales increase.

Call of Duty: Vanguard holds No.4, and sold almost exactly the same number of games this week as it did last week.

The whole chart is full of games benefitting from Black Friday deals. Guardians of the Galaxy rose 12 places to No.5 after a 419% sales jump, Just Dance 2022 is at No.7 after a 133% increase, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is at No.8 thanks to a 94% sales surge and Far Cry 6 (No.9) increased 49%.

Last week's other big new release (that wasn't Pokémon) was Battlefield 2042, which falls to No.12 following a 58% sales slip. And the big new release of the week was Farming Simulator 22, which debuts at No.13. The game sold best on PS4, which accounted for 37% of sales, followed by Xbox (34%), PS5 (14%) and then PC also 14%).

Metroid Dread, after threatening to fall out of the Top 40 last week, bounced back to No.23 (sales up 190%). Meanwhile, other recent releases saw decent weeks. Forza Horizon 5 falls to No.19, but sales actually rose 5% week-on-week, Jurassic World: Evolution 2 slides down to No.34, but sales are up 10%, and Mario Party Superstars rose 105% in sales and returns to the Top Ten at No.10.

UK Chart Roundup (Week 48 2021)

Quote

FIFA 22 is once again back at the top of the UK boxed charts following competition with Pokémon, Call of Duty and Black Friday discounts in recent weeks.

EA's flagship football title actually sold 33% fewer physical copies at UK retail compared to last week, but still managed to comfortably outsell the previous No.1, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which is down 59% week-on-week.

FIFA 22 has a long stint in the top spot until the beginning of last month, after which it was dethroned by Call of Duty: Vanguard for a fortnight, then the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl remakes, and finally Mario Kart during last week's Black Friday sales event.

However, while FIFA is on top, Nintendo is the dominant force in the upper echelons of the chart. Six of the top ten best-selling games are published by Nintendo -- and the multi-format Just Dance 2022 is selling tens of thousands more copies on Switch than on all other formats combined.

Last week, we reported that Nintendo Switch enjoyed its biggest week ever thanks to Black Friday sales.

Heavy discounts continue to drive some of the biggest moves in the charts, with a hardware bundle of Switch with Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury boosting that game's sales by 68%, carrying it up from No.21 to No.13.

Similarly, Sonic Colours Ultimate's sales lifted 52% week-on-week, rising from No.28 to No.20.

There were actually a couple of new releases this week, although these appear much further down the charts. Cricket 22: Official Game of the Ashes debuted at No.30, while Nintendo's Big Brain Academy: Brain vs Brain launched at No.36.

UK Chart Roundup (Weeks 51 & 52 2021)

Quote

FIFA 22 and Mario Kart 8: Deluxe were the final No.1s of the year in the UK boxed charts.

After being crowned Christmas No.1 the week before December 25th, FIFA 22 held that position right up until the big day itself, with sales up 13% week-on-week.

But sales fell 63% over the following seven days, causing EA's football game to tumble to No.2.

In the week after Christmas, boxed games sales typically fall quite hard as the festive sales window comes to an end. And overall boxed game sales were down 40% last week.

However, Nintendo Switch games did comparatively well, which isn't a huge surprise considering the console was one of the top-selling Christmas products (which suggests a number of people will have received a Nintendo Switch on Christmas Day).

The Switch exclusive Mario Kart 8: Deluxe only dropped 16% in sales after Christmas, which means it claims the final No.1 spot of the year. It's the seventh time the game has been No.1 in the UK boxed charts since its launch in April 2017.

Meanwhile, Animal Crossing: New Horizons only suffered an 8% sales drop in the post-Christmas week, and that game rises from No.7 to No.3 as a result.

In total, there are five Nintendo Switch exclusives in the Top Ten (six if you include Just Dance 2022, which sees most of its sales on the Nintendo machine). Pokémon Brilliant Diamond is at No.6 (sales down 8%), Minecraft is at No.7 (down 38%), and Mario Party Superstars (down 14%) is at No.10. Just Dance 2022 dropped four places to No.8, with sales down 56%.

The week before Christmas, Call of Duty: Vanguard held its No.2 position despite a 7% drop in sales, but after Christmas it suffered a similar drop to FIFA (down 64% week-on-week), and the Activision game currently sits at No.5.

The only other game in the Top Five is Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which continues to sell well alongside new PS5 console stock.

The only game in the entire boxed Top 40 to rise in sales the week after Christmas is New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe at No.18, which saw a 3% sales increase.

The pre-Christmas big new releases were Grand Theft Auto The Trilogy: Definitive Edition (which debuted at No.8) and Among Us (No.5). The following week, GTA dropped 70% in sales and fell to No.23, while Among Us fell 81% in sales to No.29. The week afterwards, both games have dropped out of the Top 40 entirely.

UK Chart Roundup (Week 1 2022)

Quote

As Mario Kart 9 trended on Twitter over the weekend, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe continues to do the business for Nintendo, and is the first UK No.1 of 2022.

Mario Kart 8: Deluxe was released in 2017, but has scored three UK No.1s in recent months thanks to a new Nintendo Switch bundle.

It's actually a completely unchanged Top Three, with FIFA 22 at No.2 and Animal Crossing: New Horizons at No.3. This only takes into account physical game sales, with digital sales not available until later in the week.

A game that jumped up the charts this week is Big Brain Academy: Brain vs Brain for Nintendo Switch. The game actually droppped in sales by 19% week-on-week, but has been performing well on the back of a recent advertising campaign.

It's January, the month where fitness starts becoming a topic of conversation for those who maybe indulged over Christmas, and so it's little surprise to see Ring Fit Adventure from Nintendo rise up the charts to No.6.

Another Switch game that has benefited from recent promotional activity is 51 Worldwide Games, which has re-entered the charts at No.13. The game rose 81% in sales week-on-week.
