Star Wars Outlaws

Looks absolutely fantastic, pretty much a Star Wars fans wet dream come true.

Also a little too reminiscent of Jedi Survivor at times thanks to visual languages similarities and stuff, but yeah, goddamn I want to play this already. The tech involved is just super impressive, going from Planet to ship seamlessly and with no loading screens, just absolutely mad.

Really hope there isn't any smoke and mirrors going on though, just looked so good, so current-gen and pretty much a dream come true that I'm like is it too good to be true in some ways? Hopefully not. Reminds me a bit of the Beyond Good and Evil Footage they showed donkeys years ago too, albeit with a Star Wars makeover.

New trailer:

I think they reduced overall asset quality of the character models, they don't look nearly as good anymore as they did in the first few trailer. Not that it's a big deal, but it seems a common issue with Motive's games.

Another issue is that this, just like Avatar and PoP, will require an online connection to be installed on console. Which means I'll be spending 70 bucks less on Star Wars games this year than anticipated.

Generally speaking though I think it looks good.

It's probably about as close I've been to buying a Star Wars game in years... I'll be waiting for reviews though, no pre-order for Ubisoft games nowadays.

Also I don't think Motive have anything to do with this game do they?

I think that sounds about what you would expect from a UbiSoft AAA game, though. The interesting part about this game is the promise of being a pseudo Han Solo in a Galaxy far, far away. I'm not saying you can't point out the simplicity of it and criticise the 'been there, done that' loop of mechanics, but I think reasonable expectations can go a long way. And even though UbiSoft games traditionally don't evolve much, he's only seen an hour of what is presumably a 40-hour game,

One thing I find odd about this so far is how there's not even an inkling of a narrative thread in any trailer or presentation we've seen. It's all 'go to faction Y, do job X'. I wonder if the setup is so interesting that they keep it under wraps or if there's simply not much there beyond what we've seen (I'm leaning towards the latter).

Had no idea this was out so soon, but Eurogamer savaged it

https://www.eurogamer.net/star-wars-outlaws-review

I didn't even know it was a Ubisoft style game. Or indeed that Ubisoft were making it but I'm not tuned into SW at all

On the other hand though, it has a card game and FFVIII and VII Rebirth teaches us that card games should add a whole extra point to a game cause they're awesome, so maybe this is a 3/5

Skimming some of the other scores out there, they don't seem as hard on it as EG but it's a sea of 6s and 7s with a lot of very similar complaints

edit spoke too soon, Funny Games hated it as well

Personally, I have my own Ubisoft style game on the backlog to return to (Avatar) so in no rush either way as I'm not a Star Wars nutter (and they definitely are nutters based on what I see trending on youtube on the regular). I imagine the IP will do a lot of heavy lifting here for people as I don't think there's actually many (if any) SW open world games

The appeal really seems to be the experience rather than the systems. Going about sightseeing the Star Wars universe in this fidelity and vastness is definitely enticing, but the last game I played that went for a similar goal (AC Valhalla) didn't manage to motivate me enough to get through. I'm kind of intrigued, especially as it seems to be rather stealth-focused. But I have some other stuff to play at the moment and with the online DRM nonsense and such I wouldn't have felt good about paying full price either way.

After selling a premium-priced version with a couple of days of early access, UbiSoft now asks people to restart the game with a new save after downloading the latest patch to avoid running into certain progress blocking issues: https://www.ign.com/articles/star-wars-outlaws-patch-1000002-new-save-ubisoft

🤡

Though even generally speaking this is super weird, as it implies that older save states aren't compatible with newer builds.

That was communicated with BG well ahead of time, it's EA was for a beta of that game and actually implemented feedback from players. it's not really the same time, Hades also does this. But this is just a release version of the game delayed, and then people getting screwed over for paying extra to play it on time cause of a bug
