That's a shite argument. GTAV has a lot more content than SWBFII and also had all of the year to shift copies, not the smaller window EA's game had. Apples and oranges.

Still impressive, but on a copies sold dependant on availability per day SWBFII will have wiped the deck with it.

I do think it's impressive, it's just a terrible comparison.

I'm honestly surprised there isn't complete market saturation of that game. Sure you could double the sales to cover people that bought on last and this gen, but going over 90 million is crazy. At this rate it's going to become the best selling game ever, overtaking the 100m Tetris has sold.

Based on my year and a half in Japanese schools, the two games that I definitely hear the most about are FIFA and GTA...just kidding, I mean Splatoon and Monster Hunter. Both seem to be popular with boys and girls.

Although, smartphone games are also very popular. Monster Strike, Clash of Clans...

Yeah, same with The Evil Within 2 as well, probably just retailers flogging old stock though, I believe publishers make money long term when stores consistently re-order batches of their games.

So if these are the Launch batches still being sold Bethesda won’t be making much from them.

More SotC sales info.

The number of physical PS4 copies sold was 73 per cent up on the game's original PlayStation 2 release all the way back in February 2006.

That figure does not include any download copies of the game, either - something which UK numbers company Chart-Track still doesn't, well, track.

NPD (US) January Sales Data

Quote

Thanks to the NPD Group and Venturebeat for the breakdown.

Here are the numbers for January 2018:

Total: $1.096 billion (up 59 percent from $690 million in January 2017)

Hardware: $278 million (up 119 percent from $127 million)

PC and console software: $517 million (up 51 percent from $343 million)

Accessories: $301 million (up 37 percent from $220 million)

Software

Dollar sales of Console, Portable and PC Games Software combined to reach $517 million in January 2018, up 51 percent versus a year ago. January dollar sales of software reached the highest total since the $549 million generated in January 2011.

Monster Hunter: World was the month's top-selling title overall, while also leading on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. Sales of Monster Hunter: World represent an all-time launch month high for the Monster Hunter franchise in the U.S.

Dragon Ball: Fighterz was the second best-selling game of January. Launch month sales of Dragon Ball: Fighterz were the highest for a Dragon Ball franchise release since Dragon Ball Z: Budokai, which released in December 2002. Dragon Ball: Xenoverse also made the January all platforms best-sellers chart, ranking at #16.

Software sales on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC all achieved significant growth of over 40 percent in January when compared to a year ago. Capcom was January's leading publisher in software dollar sales.

Hardware

January hardware dollar sales of $278 million is the highest level achieved since the $323 million sold in January 2011. Over one million units of hardware sold in January 2018, also the highest tally since January 2011.

PlayStation 4, Switch and Xbox One all performed well in the month of January. The Nintendo Switch sold the most systems, but Sony’s PlayStation 4 generated the most revenue. In dollar sales, the gap between the top-selling platform and the third best-selling was only 3 percent.

January 2018 Nintendo 3DS hardware dollar sales are the best recorded for a January month since 2014, while unit sales were the highest since January 2013.

FIFA 18 Leads Unchanged Top 3
05/Mar/2018

There are no new releases within the Top 40 All Formats (Units) this week – Milestone’s ‘Gravel’ debuts just outside at No42 but does make the revenue All Formats Top 40 at No30.

The eagle-eyed chart follower will have noticed it is time to say Happy Birthday to Nintendo’s Switch, which debuted one year ago (week 9, 2017 ‘Zelda Breath of the Wild’ debuted at No2). In terms of chart toppers this week, there’s not much change from the usual suspects plus some re-entries from ‘payday’ and assorted promotions. EA’s ‘FIFA 18’ remains at No1 for a third consecutive week and a total of 7 times on the All Formats Top 40. Rockstar/Take 2 remain at No2 with ‘GTA V’ and Activision remain at No3 with ‘Call of Duty WWII’. Nintendo’s Switch ‘Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’ makes a dash for the top, climbing 4 places to No4 and Capcom’s ‘Monster Hunter: World’ drops 1 place to No5. Microsoft’s ‘PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds’ for Xbox One jumps back in to the Top 10, up 7 places to No8.

‘GTA V’ replaces ‘FIFA 18’ at the top of the All Formats Chart this week. It is the 15th time the Rockstar/Take 2 title has reached No1.

New entry ‘TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge’ from BigBen/Koch is denied top spot by only a small margin, having to settle for No2 ahead of Sony’s new VR title ‘Bravo Team’ which debuts at No3.  Sales of ‘FIFA 18’ drop by 43% relegating it to No4, ahead of ‘Call of Duty: WWII’ which is down 2 places at No5.

Nintendo maintain 3 Top 10 titles: ‘Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’ at No6, ‘Super Mario Odyssey’ at No7 and ‘Zelda: Breath of the Wild’ at No10.  The only other new entries this week are both from Square-Enix with ‘Life is Strange: Before the Storm’ at No18 and ‘Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition’ at No31.

I'm just astounded that GTA V is doing so well, so long after release. I know it's out on... 5? 5 formats, but you'd think it would have reached saturation point by now?

Even for the double/treble-dippers!

NPD (US) February Sales Chart

Quote

Here are the numbers for February 2018:

Total: $995 million (up 23 percent from $811 million in February 2017)

Hardware: $316 million (up 55 percent from $204 million)

PC and console software: $397 million (flat from $397 million)

Accessories: $282 million (up 35 percent from $210 million)

Software

After leading the market in January, Monster Hunter: World repeated as the month's top-selling title overall, once again leading on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. Unsurprisingly, Monster Hunter: World is currently 2018's best-selling game.

Call of Duty: WWII was February's second best-selling title, and remains the best-selling title for the 12-month period ending February 2018.

Mario Kart 8 returned to the top of the Nintendo Switch chart for the first time since May 2017. Nintendo was February's leading publisher in software dollar sales, while Capcom remains the top-selling publisher of 2018.

Hardware

Total hardware unit sales, dollar sales and average pricing were all up by double-digit percentages in February 2018 when compared to a year ago. Console hardware spending reached the highest total for a February since 2014.

Sony's PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console in February, and remains the best-selling console year to date. Nintendo Switch remains on a record-setting sales pace.

Over the first twelve months in market, Nintendo Switch has achieved the highest installed base for a console platform in history.

Ubisoft's ‘Far Cry 5’ rules the roost at No.1

‘Far Cry 5’ storms to the top of the All Formats Chart this week becoming the biggest launch in the franchise’s history. Released on Tuesday it just manages to topple ‘Far Cry 4’, which debuted at No2 in W47 2014 (behind GTA V). It is impressive for a game launched in the first quarter of the year and positions it as the biggest seller ever in a week 13 (beating Bioshock Infinite). Naturally it is also the biggest launch of the year so far. The PS4 version is publisher Ubisoft’s 6th biggest launch in terms of revenue for a title on an individual format.

A large number of Easter sales as well as promotions across hardware bundles shake up the rest of the chart. ‘FIFA 18’ sales are up 61% pushing it from No5 to No2, ahead of last week’s No1 ‘Sea of Thieves’ which drops 2 places to No3. ‘Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’ overtakes 5 titles to claim 4th place, while promotional hardware bundling propels ‘Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds’ back in to the Top 10 at No5. ‘Call of Duty: WWII’ and ‘Assassin’s Creed Origins’ are also back in the Top 10 at No’s 6 and 8 respectively thanks to Easter deals, while a large price drop kicks ‘Forza Motorsport 7’ in to top gear as it reappears in the Top 40 at No9.
