Hotline Miami - Vita

A bit of a mixed bag but overall I loved it. I had actually given up on this on the PS3 but thought I would give it a shot on the Vita since it is new and I am in love with it. Much to my surprise, it was better. Being able to drag the screen around and tap enemies to target them was so easy and pretty essential later on since the auto targeting thing was bloody useless. The main problem with the game is that it often just felt plain old unfair, the boss fights especially seemed like they were designed to be no fun on purpose.

Like I said though, overall I loved it. The music, graphics and general weirdness was right up my street and I loved the subtle way they developed the relationship between the protagonist and the girl. If it hadn't felt so random and unfair at times then this is the sort of thing I would constantly throw in people's faces whenever great games were being discussed. The gameplay though really limits its appeal to a certain kind of gamer.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss - VITA

I really liked this. It was just like Uncharted only on a handheld. In fact, I would say it was my favourite after the second one. They really made the most of the cut down system and used the Vita's features in interesting ways. There were loads of treasures this time around as well, felt like millions of the fucking things. It also had the most enjoyable boss fights of the series, which isn't saying a lot really. My only criticism is that the pacing could have been better. Puzzles seemed to come in twos rather than being spread out and as usual there was too much shooting goons in the face.

The Stanley Parable (PC)

I'm calling it finished. I've looped back to the start a whole bunch of times, seen all sorts of weird stuff and seen some credits. I might go back with a guide to see if I've missed anything interesting, but I think I've seen nearly everything. It's funny, interesting, confusing and entertaining for a few hours. The narration is funny and well written.

Gone Home (PC)

Basically, it's just using the videogame medium as a way of delivering a story. It's very very different to normal videogame stories, it's intimate and low key, but it drew me in, and the game does a good job of developing characters you never see just from notes and objects in the environment.

I paid less than £10 for it in a sale, and felt perfectly happy with the few hours entertainment I got for that price. I feel like the £19.99 rrp is probably too much.

Costume Quest (PC)

This came up in chat with Sly the other day. So, since its almost Halloween, and I didn't have have anything that needed to be done, I played it through from start to finish on Sunday afternoon.

It's adorable, undemanding fun. It was really nice to play again.

Killzone: Mercenary - VITA

I really liked this, but they could have made more of the mercenary aspect. You can play through each of the levels in three different ways but it isn't an especially appealing prospect since they are basically the same, with some additional side objectives. They even come complete with cutscenes and tutorials that you need to play through each time. So although I enjoyed it I reckon I will sell it since I don't see myself bothering with the extra missions and the multiplayer is about as appealing as ever.

Also, GameTrailers has this amazingly poor quality review for the game. Shocking.

It's a bit obtuse at times and it doesn't reward you that well for exploring but the core stuff is some good Zelda, and it even manages to be genuinely surprising at times. Yup, really enjoyed it.

Tomb Raider - PC Great game, I'm glad I went back to it

Over the past couple of weeks I have finished....

Beyond: Two Souls - PS3

Pure, shameless emotional pornography. I enjoyed it the same way I would enjoy a terrible horror movie.

Killzone 3 - PS3

In co-op. The way the screen was split was incredibly restrictive, making a couple of the on rails sections infuriating since I couldn't see what was coming. Still a really fun game though. The acting and story are terrible for the most part and makes me really want the ISA to all die horrible deaths. The stuff between Malcolm McDowell and Ray Winstone is great though.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - PS3

It has the awesome Platinum camp but didn't really capture what I love about MGS. A lot of fun but a little bit of a nothing game in terms of Metal Gear.

Medal of Honour: Warfighter - 360

Really not as bad as I had been led to believe by reviews. It is pretty average, does all the flashy explosive stuff about as well as the rest of the modern war games.

Stranger's Wrath HD - Vita

Only took me about 7 fucking years. I don't know about the PS3 version but the sound and frame rate weren't fantastic on the Vita, the last battle especially really chugged along. However, it is a great game. This is my third attempt to complete it so I stuck it on easy, just to get the thing damn finished and see the end. Fantastic story and characters and the shift in gameplay half way through is still impressive.

Awesome game. When I saw I could buy this for £1.50 since I bought it on the Wii originally I just had an overwhelming urge to finally finish this bastard. I could never beat Ridley, originally, but I just walked up and blasted the shit out of him first time on this play through. I couldn't believe it. It was pretty much smooth sailing after that (apart from so bullshit hollow walls that still show solid when you use your scan visor on them).

But I'm glad I can say I've finished it now. Just the original and Metroid II on the gameboy that I haven't completed in the series.

And I know it looks like I haven't finished much lately but that's because I did finish Nier but want to get the proper ending which means doing it again but that's a longer project for me.

I've also finished Rayman Legends but I want to get at least 700 blue fellas... which after playing it some the other day that might be a problem... It's a hard game.

Blood Stone - PS3

Really enjoyed this. There was a great sense of momentum to the combat which very much reminded me of Splinter Cell: Conviction with the mix of melee attacks and focus kill moves. Didn't really know what was going on with the story since it wasn't the most compelling, it did emulate the style of the new Bond movies pretty well though. Well worth checking out if you are looking for a solid stealth/action game.
