Yakuza 5

Sega has announced the development of Yakuza 5 and the formation of Yakuza Studio.

Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi heads up the new team. According to Japanese magazine Famitsu (translated by Andriasang), Yakuza Studio is not a Yakuza-exclusive developer, despite its name. In fact, its first game is Binary Domain.

Following that game's launch, Yakuza Studio will create Yakuza Black Panther 2 for PlayStation Portable, the sequel to the PSP spin-off. In Japan it launches in spring 2012.

Meanwhile, development on Yakuza 5 is described as at an early stage. Sega has only just decided to make the game, so details are scarce. Nagoshi is holding a press conference to formally announce the creation of Yakuza Studio, and may reveal more information.

The last game in the PlayStation-exclusive series to launch in the UK was Yakuza 4, which Eurogamer awarded an 8/10 earlier this year.

At Gamescom this month Nagoshi told Eurogamer Sega's long-running open world franchise was unlikely to ever be ported across to Microsoft's Xbox 360.

Nagoshi also said Yakuza: Of the End, the spin-off game recently released in Japan, was the last of that style of Yakuza.

"The basic style and mechanics is really an old game that started on PS2 and continued on PS3," Nagoshi said, "Times keep changing, and if we started on some new games they would be in a very different shape - so the last game was the end of one particular era."

Must be selling really well in Japan then.

A pair of new Yakuza 5 videos have come out detailing the game's driving and hunting mechanics (thanks AllGamesBeta).

Taken from a Japanese TV show, the first clip shows new gameplay of series stalwart Kazuma Kiryu in his new role as a cab driver. In some parts he's painstakingly obeying the traffic laws in an almost comically languid escort mission, while another scene shows off the all new racing mechanics. Like most combat in Yakuza, well-played performance fills up a gauge that can unleash "heat" moves wherein you watch cutscenes of your characters doing something badass - in this case tilting the car your driving nearly 90 degrees to slip between a couple semi-trucks.

The second clip shows Taiga Saejima skulking through the wintry mountains hunting. The camera seems pretty wonky and aiming looks intentionally off-kilter, but these games were always more amusing for their outlandish content than polished gameplay. Like the yakuza itself, it looks a bit rough, but not without its charms.

Yakuza 5 still doesn't have a confirmed western release, but since all the other numbered Yakuza games - and the zombie spin-off Dead Souls - came to Europe and North America, we expect this will follow suit. It comes out in Japan on 6th December, so based on the series' history, a late 2013 western release seems likely.

Atlus might be localizing Yakuza 5 for release in North America, according to the latest issue of EGM.

“The House That Demon Schlong Mara Built is far from dead and looks to keep on churning out great localizations,” the magazine’s Q-Mann wrote in its latest rumor mill. “In fact, the Q-Gangzsta even has this exclusive tidbit: Don’t rule out Yakuza 5 coming to America under the Atlus banner. After some high-rollin’ escapades in the Tokyo underworld during my many TGS trips over the years, the Q is ready for the rest of you to relive some of his thuggin’ and buggin’!”

If true, this shouldn’t come as a complete surprise. Sega recently purchased Atlus’ parent company Index, and Atlus generally localizes even the most niche titles.

Yakuza 5 first launched for PlayStation 3 in Japan in December 2012. It is the second latest Yakuza title, with the newest release being this month’s Yakuza: Ishin for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.

Thanks, GearNuke.

Yakuza 5 will launch on PlayStation 3 via PlayStation Network in Europe and North America at some point in 2015, Sega has announced. The Japanese crime adventure came out in Japan in December 2012.

Yakuza 4 and Yakuza: Dead Souls will launch for PlayStation 3 via PlayStation Network in Europe at 00.01 on Sunday - yes, that's midnight tonight. Both games already saw a disc release on these shores.

Yakuza 5 follows the events of Yakuza 4, and continues the story of Kazuma Kiryu, alongside four other protagonists. It's set in five Japanese cities, includes a raft of mini-games and a modified battle system. Also included is Another Drama, a series of side stories that focus on each protagonist in-depth.

"The world of the Yakuza series has fascinated gamers in Japan and the West for many years," said Sega of America boss John Cheng.

"We know fans have been eagerly awaiting a release of Yakuza 5 here and we are thrilled to finally launch this spectacular entry in the series in North America and Europe."

There's no news, however, on Yakuza 0, in development for PlayStation 4 and PS3 and due out in Japan in 2015.

I've been starting to wonder if Yakuza 5 would actually be releasing in 2015, as Sega and Sony promised at last year's PlayStation Experience and have scarcely mentioned since, but it seems the long wait is nearly over. According to Sega, Yakuza 5 is targeting a mid-November launch.

"Unfortunately, it’s a little later than we would’ve liked, and a few weird development bugs that popped up in localization caused the delay," a Sega representative wrote via the company's blog today. "Without getting too technical, there were just certain parts that didn’t like switching the Japanese text out for English, and we had to actually search through the source code to find a fix, taking more time than we expected. But! Everything is more or less back on track. Once we have details beyond just 'mid-November,' we’ll make sure to share them!"
Yakuza 5 was released in Japan back in December 2012. Since then, Sega has published a prequel set in the 1980s, another that takes place during the late Edo period, and announced a new game, Yakuza 6, starring famous entertainer Beat Takeshi and a remake of the first entry in the series.
Rest assured, Sega's localization team will have no shortage of work when this project wraps.
