Looks like a Mass Effect game to me. Spin-off or ME3?

Some (far fetched) mutterings so far.

It only surfaced a little while ago, but already we're getting the distinct impression that this could run and run. The mystery behind BioWare's teased major new project has just taken a slightly bizarre twist, as the developer has tweeted a pair of barcodes that games blog Rock, Paper, Shotgun have had a good go at decoding.

Apparently, barcode number one when scanned reveals a stream of binary numbers that when decoded leaves the number 55.845, which is the atomic weight of iron. Iron of course makes steel, which might suggest that BioWare could be ressurecting it's 1996 mech shooter, 'Shattered Steel'.

The second barcode meanwhile, reveals the number 128.5, which as you'll well know, is the lowest recorded temperature on planet Earth, in Vostok, Antarctica. The Mass Effect fans amongst you will instantly recognise that there's a system in the first game called Vostok, so there's certainly a case for something Mass Effect-related there. Vostok 1 was also the first manned space flight 20 years ago. But then again, it's also a temperature low enough to shatter steel... we'd imagine.

Of course, this could all be torturous teasing on BioWare's part, but all will be revealed soon enough... We hope.

New game points to being a multiplayer shooter.

The BioWare project teased earlier today by Spike TV's Video Game Awards is not an early look at Mass Effect 3, according to a development source, but the multiplayer-focused Mass Effect spin-off currently in the works at BioWare Montreal.

That Mass Effect game is not a massively multiplayer online version of BioWare's sci-fi RPG series, but a game that's designed to appeal more to the Call of Duty market, according to that source. We're told to expect player progression in the vein of Activision's wildly popular online shooter along with some sort of single-player component that does not feature Mass Effect's Commander Shepard in a leading role.

None of that should really be too surprising, given hints BioWare and EA have dropped in the past.

BioWare Montreal, which has aided in Mass Effect 2 development, was seeking multiplayer programmers earlier this year to "take existing single player user experiences and make them multiplayer safe." BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk has also said that there will be more games set in the Mass Effect universe outside of the series' main trilogy.

EA's John Schappert has promised "something far-reaching coming from Mass Effect" in the new year, something a December-timed reveal could drum up new enthusiasm for. Schappert could have simply been referring to the PlayStation 3 version of Mass Effect 2, however, which is due in January 2011.

Finally, former Raven Software (Quake 4, Wolfenstein) lead designer Manveer Heir moved to BioWare Montreal this summer to work on Mass Effect, giving the developer some well-known multiplayer shooter talent.

We've reached out to EA to seek comment on the details provided by our source and will update if they respond.

A multiplayer shooter set in the Mass Effect universe doesn't do a lot for me, could be cool I guess.

As Crayman above me said, the Mass Effect universe has got a lot of possibilities and scope so they could do something that is in a different direction and still make it awesome. My main concern would be there lack of experience in this kind of area.

Mass Effect 3 may sound very different to Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 - BioWare has hired Clint Mansell, whose best work has been done partnering with celebrated filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler and Black Swan), to make the game's music.

Mass Effect 3 appears to be his videogame debut.

"I'm doing a videogame this year actually: Mass Effect 3," Mansell told The Quietus.

"I'm definitely interested in different outlets – that's one of the reasons I get involved in short films. It's not so much that I can experiment as it is to be in a situation where nobody's looking over your shoulder. Short films are usually made by young people and they've got ideas I can bounce off. They can take me in a different direction.

"So in a game, the character might arrive at a big boss and you have to have a piece that can quickly become dramatic.

Where this leaves two-time Mass Effect composer Jack Wall remains to be seen. Eurogamer has requested clarification.

Mansell said that as a composer on a game you take on a role that closely resembles a DJ.

"You've got the holding pattern, then the big explosion where you need the score to kick in. Then you need to take it off on a tangent," he said.

"You've got all these different elements that change depending on what the player does. You have to figure out an overall symphony, but be able to break it down into component parts.

"You can bring the pain when required."

Excitingly, Mansell said he likes to fly to London to record his work (composed at home) because "the resources and the musicians are the best". But he's not fussy; if BioWare decides to fly him from Los Angeles to Canada then hey ho, he'll go.

Oh fucking hell! :o

The RfaD track does crop up a lot doesn't it. Isn't it a Top Gear favourite (before the Inception s/t replaced it). The Pop Will Eat Itself song sounds like the original Grand Theft Auto theme tune.

Back on topic, seems a tad harsh on the composer of the music for the first two games..
