UK Chart Roundup and UK Chart Top-10, week ending July 30th 2022 (Week 30)

Quote

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 was the best-selling boxed video game in the UK last week, according to charts company GfK.

The game very narrowly beat Xenoblade Chronicles 2 to become the biggest launch in the Xeno series so far, according to data shared by GfK boss Dorian Bloch to GamesIndustry.biz.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 beat its predecessor by just a handful of units in terms of week one physical sales. In fact, all three Xenoblade games on the Nintendo Switch sold roughly the same amount of units at launch, with Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition the No.3 biggest launch.

This is in terms of units. In terms of revenue, Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 generated more money during their first weeks than Xenoblade Chronicles 3. The new game's special edition was unfortunately not ready for launch, which would have carried a higher price point.

The Xeno series is well regarded globally, but it remains a niche franchise in the UK. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is the fifth biggest Switch game launch of the year in the UK, behind Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Nintendo Switch Sports, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and Kirby and The Forgotten Land. But it sold more in its first week than Mario Strikers: Battle League Football.

Falling to second place this week is Horizon: Forbidden West, but sales for the PlayStation game still rose 118% week-on-week, again driven by a hardware bundle featuring the game.

Also new in the charts this week is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge at No.8. Published by Merge Games, the boxed version sold best on Nintendo Switch, representing 67% of sales.

Finally, Digimon Survive comes in at No.10.

Last week's new release, Live A Live for Nintendo Switch, falls from No.6 to No.23 after a 64% drop in sales week-on-week.

UK Chart Roundup & UK Chart, week ending August 6th 2022 (Week 31)

Quote

Horizon Forbidden West has clambered back onto the top of the UK Entertainment Software charts after being briefly dethroned by Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

It climbed one place to reclaim the number one spot on this week's charts, with last week's chart topper slipping to 10th after an initial glut of sales.

Overall, it was a strong week for titles with PlayStation links. Demon Souls returned to the chart at number 20, suggesting PS5 restocks have helped boost sales, while the PlayStation Summer Sale appears to have boosted the prospects of games such as The Quarry and Gran Turismo 7.

However, the Switch continues to generate strong physical sales in the UK overall. Six of this week's top ten were Switch titles, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe receiving a minor upwards bump following the release of the new DLC tracks on Thursday 4th August.

Check out the chart in full below for more information about this week's best sellers.

July 2022 NPD: MultiVersus shoots past Elden Ring to the top

Consumer spending on video games, while still low compared with previous years, is close to what it was in July 2020. According to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group, hardware sales are also increasing, possibly thanks to supplies increasing. In a major coup, Warner Bros.’ free-to-play fighting game MultiVersus has overtaken both Elden Ring and Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga as the top-selling game.

Video Game Accessories $190 $148 -22%

“July 2022 consumer spending across video game hardware, content and accessories fell 9% when compared to a year ago, to $4.18 billion,” said NPD analyst Mat Piscatella. “The total is slightly lower than the $4.19 billion generated in July 2020.”

It’s not huge upswing in numbers by any means. The gaming market has been trickling down slowly for the last several months, with May 2022 having the lowest spend of the pandemic period. According to data provided by Sensor Tower, even the mobile market is on a decline. However, the increased console sales indicate that, at least for the time being, some of the supply chain problems have been ameliorated.

NPD tracks physical sales at retailers, but it also gets digital data directly from publishers. Not every company participates. For example, Nintendo doesn’t share its first-party sales, and Activision Blizzard does not provide its Battle.net sales.

These charts are sorted by dollar sales — not number of units sold. And this is for full-game sales and does not include in-game spending.

In addition to the returns, three new games have jumped onto the list. Besides MultiVersus and Xenoblade Chronicles 3, tactical RPG-meets-dark visual novel Digimon Survive has also made it. Famitsu reported (via Nintendo Life) the game took second place on the Japanese charts for the final week of July.

MultiVersus takes gold

Elden Ring and Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga have topped the NPD charts since they released, with both swapping off the top spot. MultiVersus is the first game to launch since to upset that balance. According to Piscatella, these sales were driven by sales of the game’s Founders Packs. MultiVersus has accrued over ten million players since launch across all platforms. Warner Bros and Player First recently rolled out the game’s first season, promising several new characters.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 jumps ranks

Another new game that has made a splash on the top ranks is hefty RPG Xenoblade Chronicles 3. While it didn’t dethrone either Elden Ring or Lego Star Wars from the bronze and silver, it did manage to get fourth. It was also the best-selling game of July on the Switch. Fellow RPG Live A Live only made it to rank 8 on that list, though it is worth noting that NPD doesn’t track digital sales of any Nintendo games.

August 2022 NPD: Madden NFL 23 tops charts as hardware sales rise

Consumer spending on video games reached $4.1 billion in August. According to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group, spending is comparable to 2020 levels, and hardware sales are also on the rise. As for games, Madden 23 and Saints Row have both topped the charts in their debut month, while Marvel’s Spider-Man has gotten a boost thanks to its PC launch.

August 2022 Dollar Sales, Millions August 2021 August 2022 Change
Total Video Game Sales $4,307 $4,104 -5%
Video Game Content (Physical & Digital Full Game, DLC/MTX and Subscription consumer spending across Console, Cloud, Mobile*, Portable, PC and VR) platforms) $3,812 $3,591 -6%
Video Game Hardware $329 $375 14%
Video Game Accessories $167 $138 -18%
*Mobile spending provided by Sensor Tower

“August 2022 consumer spending across video game hardware, content and accessories declined 5% when compared to a year ago, to $4.10 billion,” said NPD analyst Mat Piscatella. “This total is slightly higher than the $4.07 billion total reached during the August 2020 tracking period.”

While 2022 continues to be a less spendy year than 2021, figures are comparable to spending in 2020. In fact, they’re slightly higher. They’re not good, however: Most sales are down, including mobile sales. Hardware sales, on the other hand, have gone up by 14%. This is likely because of improved console availability.

Piscatella added: “Year-to-date spending through August 2022 totaled $34.6 billion, a 9% drop when compared to the same period in 2021, but 3% higher than the $33.5 billion achieved during the 2020 comparable period.”

The charts in August show the biggest shake-up in months. Elden Ring and LEGO Star Wars: Skywalker Saga have been holding strong at the top of the charts since their respective releases, but now they’ve ceded the top to multiple games. One of those is the new Saints Row reboot, which is putting in a good showing on its debut month. Another new game that managed to chart is Soul Hackers 2, Atlus’s latest RPG.

In addition to the new games, several other older games have made a comeback on the charts in recent months. These include Skyrim and Gran Turismo 7. Horizon II: Forbidden West also made the charts, likely due to summer sales discounts. Last month’s new releases, including Digimon Survive, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and MultiVersus have managed to remain on the charts.

Madden NFL 23 comes in hot

The latest game in the Madden NFL series has snagged the top spot, to the surprise of no one. According to Piscatella, this is the 23rd consecutive year that a Madden NFL title topped the charts in its launch month. Madden NFL 22 is still charting on the best-selling games lists of the year, so it’s not a surprise its successor is also putting in a good showing. Chances are good this title will become a fixture on the charts for the rest of the year.

Marvel’s Spider-Man swings back with a PC launch

Another game that’s made a major comeback is Marvel’s Spider-Man — which went from 84th place to 3rd. No mystery is behind this; the game launched on Steam and the Epic Games Store in August. Piscatella also noted that it was August’s best-seller across Steam’s tracked titles.

UK Chart Roundup (Week 38 2022)

Quote

Stray was the highest selling new release of the past week, landing at No.3 in its debut week.

While the feline adventure was released digitally for PS5, PS4 and PC in July, Annapurna Interactive published a physical edition for PS5 last week. The game is also available to PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers at no additional cost.

The only other new release to enter the charts this week was Square Enix's fantasy strategy game The DioField Chronicle, which launched at No.17.

Splatoon remains the biggest selling boxed game of the week, racking up a third consecutive No.1 despite a 44% drop in sales.

Nintendo also took No.2 with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe rising one place, although sales were down 5% compared to last week.

Two games actually saw healthy rises in sales this week. Grand Theft Auto 5 sold 21% more units and rose from No.9 to No.5, and a retailer promotion boosted Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga by 43%, up from No.18 to No.10.

  • 3 weeks later...

I wouldn't really pay much attention to VGChartz @mmmark, a wholly unreliable source.

So yeah, bit of an odd take there.

As Ben says though, I do still think all consoles are doing well at the moment. PS5 is doing gangbusters but stock issues have affected its momentum, I think this Xmas you will finally see it begin to stretch its legs, especially when that Ragnarok bundle hits. XSX has done well, particularly in North America, as is par for the course, XSS seems to be selling really well as well (again especially in NA) at its low price point and doesn't suffer the same level of stock issues as XSX and PS5.

The lack of a big AAA blockbuster will effect Xbox over the Xmas period.

So whilst the source is unreliable, the sentiment can largely be agreed with and stock issues are largely at blame.

NPD (US) September 2022 Sales Data

Quote

State of the Market

U.S. consumer spending on video game content, hardware and accessories reached $4.1 billion during the month of September 2022, a decline of 4% when compared to the same month a year ago.

Hardware was the best performing segment during September, led by double-digit percentage growth for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. Year-to-date total video game spending across content, hardware and accessories is now 8% lower than 2021, at $38.4 billion.

Video game content spending fell 7% in the month of September vs YA, to $3.4 billion. Content performance was driven by a double-digit percentage gain in non-mobile video game subscription spending, which was offset by declines across other content segments.

Six new video game releases ranked among the top 8 best-selling titles of the month in tracked spending.

Hardware

Hardware sales in September increased 19% when compared to a year ago, the third consecutive month of double-digit % growth. Improved supply of PlayStation 5 was a primary driver of the increase, with PlayStation 5 ranking first in both unit and dollar sales.

Nintendo Switch ranked 2nd in unit sales among hardware platforms in the month, while Xbox Series placed 2nd in dollar sales.

Accessories spending in September was flat when compared to a year ago, at $174 million. This is the first month since October 2021 in which Accessories spending did not experience a year-on-year decline.

An increase in spending on Gamepads in September offset a decline in Headsets/Headphones. The best-selling accessory of September in both unit and dollar sales was the Xbox Wireless Controller Carbon Black.
