Hogwarts Legacy back at No.1 | UK Boxed Charts

Starfield's premium edition upgrade debuts at No.7

Hogwarts Legacy has returned to the top of the UK boxed charts, following a 228% spike in sales week-on-week.

As reported by GfK, a retailer promotion has seen sales increase across all formats for the Warner Bros. title, the highest on PS5 at 266% followed by Xbox Series X|S at 249%.

Meanwhile, Starfield's premium edition upgrade — essentially a box with a download code that unlocks early access to the digital edition — debuted at No.7 following early access on Friday last week. The full game will be released on September 6.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga climbed the charts from No.6 to No.2 with a 98% increase in sales due to a discount on Nintendo Switch. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe moved down one spot to No.3 despite a 18% rise, while Zelda fell to No.4 following a 4% decrease week-on-week.

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon fell to No.5 following its debut at No.1 last week, with a 71% sales decrease, while FIFA 23 made its way to the bottom of the Top Ten from No.4 after a 27% drop week-on-week. However, the game did see a 127% rise in sales on Xbox Series X|S.

Elsewhere, Street Fighter 6 and Diablo 4 jumped up the charts from No.22 and No.24 to No.13 and No.14 respectively due to price reductions.

Pikmin 4 fell from No.14 to No.16 with sales down 15% week-on-week, while Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 moved from No.11 to No.26 following a 40% decrease in sales despite a 34% rise on PS4 due to discounts.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition dropped considerably from No.9 to No.37 following its price promotion last week, experiencing a 59% drop in sales.

Meanwhile, four games re-entered the UK physical charts this week due to various retailer deals. Forspoken is at No.21 with a 90% increase in sales with Final Fantasy 16 close behind at No.22 after a 204% spike. Saints Row is at No.29 with a 64% rise mostly on PS5, while Gran Turismo 7 has seen a 47% sales increase.

Starfield debuts at No.1 | UK Boxed Charts

Three new titles have joined the charts this week, including NBA 2K24

Starfield has topped the UK physical charts this week.

GfK's report showed that the space-action RPG sold more physical copies on Xbox than it did on PC.

Starfield's premium upgrade (a box with a code that provided early access to the digital version) has fallen to No.34 after debuting at No.7 last week. This version experienced a 71% decrease in sales due to the game's wider release on September 6.

The Xbox exclusive reached over six million players in two days, making it Bethesda's biggest launch of all time.

Three more new titles released alongside Starfield this week. NBA 2K24 and Fae Farm debuted in the Top Ten at No.7 and No.9 respectively. Crime Boss: Rockay City entered the charts at No.22.

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon fell from No.5 to No.20 following a 63% drop in sales. The Bandai Namco title debuted at No.1 for the week ending August 26, 2023.

Elsewhere, Hogwarts Legacy is at No.2 following its 228% spike in sales last week. The Warner Bros. title is still experiencing a price promotion, with sales increasing by 4% week-on-week.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is sitting at No.3 despite sales down 24% week-on-week. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate moved one place up to No.5 after an 8% rise in sales due to a price reduction on PS5.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom fell out of the Top Five for the first time, and is now at No.6 following a 23% drop in sales.

Meanwhile, FIFA 23 dropped out of the Top Ten, and is now at No.11 after a 12% sales drop. But the game saw an increase on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S due to retailer discounts. This year's EA Sports FC 24, the first in the series to drop the FIFA brand, will debut on September 29.

Pikmin 4 fell further from No.16 to No.18 following a 27% decrease in sales, while The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition rose to No.15 after being at No.37 last week. The CD Projekt Red title saw a rise of 38% in sales due to a deal on PS4.

Two titles also re-entered the charts this week. The Dark Souls Trilogy came back at No.31 following a 19% increase in sales due to discounts on PS4, while Cyberpunk 2077 is at No.32 following a 41% increase in sales week-on-week thanks to another PC price promotion.

UK Monthly Chart - August 2023

Quote

PS5 sales jumped 42% in the UK during August | UK Monthly Charts

Red Dead Redemption returns to the Top Five

It was a solid August for video games in the UK, driven by continued strong sales of PS5.

According to GfK, over 135,000 games consoles were sold last month, a rise of 22% over July and 8% up over August last year.

PlayStation 5 posted a 42% jump in sales month-on-month. The console benefited substantially from aggressive price discounting and bundles across the summer months. Overall year-to-date, PS5 sales are now up 60%.

Nintendo Switch is showing signs of slowdown this year, but it's still holding strong. Sales dropped 5% month-on-month during August, while overall the console's sales are down 10% year-to-date.

There was some growth for Xbox during August, with Series S and X sales up 7% compared with July. It still trails Switch and PS5, and sales are down nearly 23% year-to-date. However, the games market should expect a bit of a fightback from Microsoft heading into the last months of the year, with the release of Starfield and Forza Motorsport to come.

The success of PS5 also boosted accessories. GfK data says that 565,309 add-on products were sold in August, which is up 3.5% compared with July and 1% up over August last year.

The Top Six selling accessories last month were all for PS5. The first four were all DualSense Controllers (White, Midnight Black, Cosmic Red and Starlight Blue), followed by the DualSense Charging Station and then the Grey Camo DualSense controller.

Looking at the GSD charts, 1.75 million games were sold, which is a drop of 2.2% compared with August last year. But actually, that doesn't tell the full story.

FIFA 23 was the best-selling game of August, according to GSD data. It was driven by a surge in sales for the Nintendo Switch version of the game, which had been discounted on Nintendo eShop.

But it wasn't the real No.1. Baldur's Gate 3 would almost certainly have taken the crown for August, but Larian is one of the publishers missing from the GSD panel, so unfortunately it doesn't make the chart at all. It's reasonable to assume that with Baldur's Gate 3, August would have been a far bigger month.

The other big new release of the month was Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon. Armored Core is not a franchise that has a major following in the UK, but the series is created by Dark Souls and Elden Ring developer From Software, which has now become a household name. As a result, this new Armored Core has significantly outperformed its predecessors.

Rockstar had a great month with three games in the Top Ten. One of those games was Red Dead Redemption, which made its way to PS4 and Nintendo Switch during August. As a result, the game is back in the charts at No.5.

Speaking of comebacks, Quake 2 is back in the charts nearly 26 years since it was first released. The game has been remastered and updated, complete with new levels, and as a result it reached No.12 last month. Quake 2's data is missing its Nintendo Switch sales, so the game may have charted slightly higher.

UK Chart Roundup (Week 38 2023)

Quote

This week saw several new entries in the UK boxed charts, with Mortal Kombat 1 taking the top spot.

GfK's report showed that the NetherRealm Studios title saw the most sales on PS5, followed by Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch.

Round8 Studio's Lies of P debuted at No.3 on the weekly UK physical charts. The Pinnochio-inspired Souls-like is a step away from the studio's free-to-play MMO Bless Unleashed, released in 2020.

The HD bundled version of Pikmin 1 and 2 followed at No.4, which launched in a physical format this week following its release on the Nintendo eShop earlier this year.

Payday 3 was the last new entry in the Top Ten, debuting at No.7. The Starbreeze Studio title sold significantly more on the PS5 compared to Xbox Series X|S.

Elsewhere, Cyberpunk 2077 re-entered the Top Ten at No.6 from No.21 with a 163% spike in sales. GfK reported this was due to price promotions in preparation for the upcoming Phantom Liberty expansion.

As a result of the new entries and re-entries, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom fell to No.9 for the first time since its release in May.

Meanwhile, The Crew Motorfest dropped to No.11 following its No.2 debut last week with a 57% decrease in sales. Starfield also dropped out of the Top Ten and is now at No.19 following a 41% drop week-on-week.

EA Sports FC 24 is the UK's second biggest retail launch of 2023 | UK Boxed Charts

Publisher's first post-FIFA title sells 30% fewer physical copies than last year, but shows improvement on Switch

The first title in Electronic Arts new football series has launched at No.1 in the UK retail charts.

According to GfK data shared with GamesIndustry.biz, the number of copies EA Sports FC sold in its first week are actually 30% lower than FIFA 23 at launch.

It was expected the rebrand would result in some short-term impact on sales, and it's possible a surge in digital sales may reduce that gap.

Even with the year-on-year decline, EA Sports FC stands as the second biggest retail launch of 2023, bested only by The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. With digital, it may well be the highest.

Most formats showed decline when compared with FIFA 23's launch, although sales of the Switch version are up slightly.

Elsewhere, the charts are fairly unremarkable. Last week's No.1, Mortal Kombat, is knocked down to No.2 with an 83% week-on-week drop in sales, with Hogwarts Legacy, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Grand Theft Auto 5 rounding out the Top Five.

Retailer promotions saw two games return to the Top Ten, with The Witcher 3: Complete Edtion at No.10 after a 59% rise in sales, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor at No.8 thanks to a whopping 216% boost.

Here is the GfK Boxed Top Ten for this week ending September 30, 2023:

01 (NE) EA SPORTS FC 24 (EA SPORTS)

02 (01) MORTAL KOMBAT 1 (WARNER BROS. INTERACTIVE)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 topped the UK boxed charts this week, pushing Nintendo's reigning title Super Mario Bros Wonder to No.3.

Does "Alan Wake 2" completely miss out the chart as it's a digital only release ?

It's a little weird nowadays that they only chart physical copies - wonder if 'code in a box' games count or not ?

Yeah, these UK weekly charts are the boxed only charts and then a UK digital chart comes out once a month or so that details all the purchases. There's also a monthly pan-european chart posted every month too that combines boxed and digital sales but it's rarely posted really.

The US monthly chart includes all digital + boxed purchases with a few exceptions (no Nintendo digital figures for example).

The code in a box games do count I believe.

Software

Spending on video game content in October fell 4% when compared to a year ago, to $3.6 billion. Growth in physical console software and mobile spending was offset by declines in other areas, particularly digital premium downloads driven by the release date shift of Call of Duty.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was the best-selling game of October, instantly becoming the 4th best-selling game of 2023 year-to-date. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 also led all titles in physical software dollar sales during October.

Launch month dollar sales of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 exceeded those of September 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man by a double-digit percentage.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder debuted as the #2 best-selling game of October 2023. It currently ranks as the 21st best-selling game of 2023 year-to-date (note: digital sales for Nintendo published titles are not inluded in the title sales ranking charts).

Roblox was released on PlayStation platforms during October and ranked 4th across all titles on PlayStation 5 in U.S. monthly active users, according to Circana’s Player Engagement Tracker, trailing only Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, Fortnite and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Hardware

Video game hardware spending fell 23% when compared to a year ago, to $327 million. All current generation consoles experienced a double-digit percentage decline in dollar sales when compared to a year ago.

PlayStation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform in both unit and dollar sales during October 2023. Xbox Series ranked 2nd in dollar sales, while Switch was #2 in units. Year-to-date hardware spending was 6% higher when compared to the same period in 2022, at $4.0 billion.

Accessories

October 2023 accessories spending fell 2% when compared to a year ago, to $147 million. The PS5 Dual Sense Wireless Controller Midnight Black was the month’s best-selling accessory in consumer spending.

UK Monthly Chart - October 2023

Quote

Spider-Man and Super Mario win in October as console sales fall | UK Monthly Charts

Absence of Call of Duty makes for a tough comparison with October 2022

1.6 million digital games were sold in the UK during October (GSD data), a drop of 24% over the year before.

Meanwhile, GfK data shows that physical game sales are up slighty (+8%) to 1.08 million games sold.

The main reason for the overall drop is the fact that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launched in October last year, whereas this year's Call of Duty landed in November.

There was also a drop in sales for this year's football game. EA Sports FC 24's first week sales, looking at GfK and GSD numbers together, are 16% lower than last year's FIFA 23. 2022's FIFA game was the last one by EA, and also tied into the World Cup that took place in December, which led to a strong opening month for the game.

The best-selling new game of the month was Spider-Man 2 from Sony. By combining GfK and GSD sales together, we can see that the first two weeks are nearly 9% lower than 2018's original Spider-Man, but 94% bigger than 2020's Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Compared with last year's big PlayStation game, God of War Ragnarok, the first two weeks of sales are 2% higher for Spider-Man 2. Note: God of War Ragnarok was available on PS4 and PS5, whereas Spider-Man 2 is purely a PS5 game.

Next on the new game list is Assassin's Creed Mirage, which was the third biggest digital game of the month and the fourth biggest physical release. The game's sales are 58% lower than the opening four weeks for Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which released in 2020. However, this was always billed as a smaller Assassin's Creed, with gameplay similar to older titles in the series. The first four weeks of sales for Mirage are almost identical to the first four weeks of 2018's Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

Elsewhere, Super Mario Bros Wonder is the third biggest physical game of the month, but isn't in the digital charts as Nintendo does not share download figures with the charts company.

In terms of boxed sales alone, Super Mario Bros Wonder is the biggest Mario launch on Nintendo Switch, with 3,000 more sales after two weeks than 2017's Super Mario Odyssey and 13,000 more than 2020's Super Mario 3D All-Stars. With digital, it is very likely this is the biggest Mario launch in UK history. Nintendo has already announced it is Europe's biggest Super Mario game launch.

Also new in the charts for October is EA Sports UFC 5, which is at No.4 in the digital charts but No.33 in physical. Lords of the Fallen is at No.5 in digital and No.17 in physical. Sonic Superstars is at No.26 in digital and No.9 in physical, and the game sold significantly better in a box than it did as a download.

Just missing out on the Top Ten is Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Volume 1, which makes No.11 in digital and No.15 in physical.

Finally, Red Dead Redemption makes the physical charts at No.10 due to the arrival of the boxed version for Nintendo Switch and PS4. The game was released on these platforms digitally back in August.

PS5 and Xbox console sales dip in October

There was a slight drop in console hardware sales in the UK, according to GfK figures. Sales dropped 10% month-on-month to 176,022 devices sold (panel data).

There was a slight dip of 4% in sales of PS5, although it was still a very strong month for Sony's console. 56% of PS5s sold in October were for the official EA Sports FC 24 hardware bundle. The Spider-Man 2 edition of the console accounted for 6% of sales.

The big decline was for Xbox Series S and X, which suffered a sales drop of 33%. The console had a strong September due to the release of a new Xbox Series S model and the hit game Starfield, which explains the month-on-month decline.

Microsoft’s platforms still narrowly manages to stay ahead of Nintendo Switch, which is once again in third spot. However, Nintendo Switch sales did rise 15% over the month before, helped by the launch of Super Mario Bros Wonder. However, the new Mario red OLED version of the console was only 6.2% of Switch sales last month.

As we revealed last week, PS5 has had a 51% market over the last six months due to strong sales activity over the summer. Xbox has seen its market share drop to 23%, while Nintendo Switch has fallen heavily to 25%. GfK boss Dorian Bloch says there is a lot to play for over the final three months of the year, which tends to account for over half of all console sales during a calendar year.

In terms of accessories, 583,869 add-on products were sold in October according to GfK panel data.

That's a drop of 12% on September and 15% down on October last year.

It's an unchanged Top Five, with the white DualSense at No.1, the Carbon Black Xbox Wireless Controller at No.2 and the Midnight Black DualSense at No.3. Xbox's Robot White (No.4) and Pulse Red (No.5) Wireless Controller complete the Top Five.
