The Walking Dead

Surprised there was no thread for this already.

A few people told me how good this was, so I was at a lose end tonight and decided to download it. It was a good decision.

The Walking Dead is based on The Walking Dead comics and is a point and click adventure. However, it rips off a few things from other games and adds some new stuff on top. The stuff that's ripped off comes right out of Mass Effect and games of that ilk in where you have an either/or situation or conversation tree which effects what will happen further down the line. It's basically a branching story of which will evolve to your particular choices as you play. Replies to characters in game are mapped to a face button, and while some are timed in others where you are not in control of the situation, there are others that allow you to take your time and pick wisely what you want to say.

The new thing that has been brought to the table is context sensitive combat. Now this sounds horrible, but they actually made it like an interactive qte, as in you actually have more control over what happens, but the effects of the qte are always the same, or at least I think they are. Outside of combat qtes, the left stick controls your character and the right stick controls the 4 points cursor, with each point signifying an action on the d-pad. These actions range from observing items, talking to people and interacting with stuff. It's a simple yet elegant set up.

The whole shebang is wrapped up in some very nice celshaded graphics that harp back to the comic origins of the series. The way the story is acted out ranges from excellent to a bit choppy, but it's more of the excellent side than the crappy. The sound effects are quite good too, it looks as the whole package has had a lot of thought put into it. I particularly liked the attention to detail on one of the neon lights trying to hawk cola onto people, it's stuff like that that is prevalent here in the south of the USA. It's full of little design touches like this. Either they researched that sort of stuff or some people on the team have lived in the areas they have portrayed here in the game.

Other than that, I can't really say much without spoiling the game or soiling the experience, as it's something you played maybe once or twice and then be done with. It's 400 points and is the first of five episodes that will be released. I have no idea when the new episodes will drop, but I'm looking forward to them

The episode is quite short, I think I finished it in about 2 1/2 hours, although I think I missed a puzzle. I'm not sure though, it could have just been a dead end, I did look about to see if I could complete it but the game sort of pushed me right towards the end once I past a certain point. A nice touch is that right at the end it tells you what decisions other people made and how you aligned yourself within these decision. Maybe when/if the thread takes off we can talk about it all in spoilers, there's not much point me talking about it until a few other people have played and completed the game.

Anyone else played it or interested in it?

I too had never played a TellTale game, but I was up till 1:30am on Friday night finishing this with the missus... I'd instabought it earlier in the day, and only booted it up with the intention to play for 10 minutes to see how 'into it' she'd be...

Loved the branching story, which IMO, may well turn out to be much more impressive than how Mass Effect does that stuff...

Loved the high tension/emotion scenes...

Loved the "making sure" the zombies you kill are "well & truely" finished...

Loved seeing the preview for Ep2 that is pieced together from various clips based on your decisions...

Loved seeing how my decisions stacked up against other players...

This is gonna be one hell of a series!!

Here's what I remember from the six(?) big choices I had to make:

>I saved Duck, and Shawn died... not sure if the game gives you a chance to save both of them, but I ran out of time if it does.

>I sided with Kenny in the drugstore, and got him to thump the old dude with the heart condition (Larry?).

>I tried to prevent the bitten-chick from shooting herself, but I'm guessing it was a foregone conclusion.

>I saved the news-reporter chick (Carley?) and Doug got eaten...

Can't remember the other two things, but I do remember I was with the majority on 5 out of 6 of them...

I've played most of telltale's episodic games. They're generally just the right length for a bitsesize bit of adventuring.

I've heard a lot of good things about, so i'll probably end up shelling out for the PC version within the next week or two. It would be nice to wait till there's a couple more episodes out to avoid the waiting, if i had the patience.

The important decisions are here.

Lie to Hershel?

I was honest to Hershel.

Duck or Shawn?

I saved shawn, but it ended up in disaster anyway.

Side with Kenny?

I sided with Kenny in the drug store after a confusing argument about Duck being bitten. Bassically got in Larrys face and told him to fuck himself.

Gave Irene the gun?

I refused Irene the gun.

Doug or Carley?

I saved Doug, I think he'll come in more handy than Carley ever would, despite Carley saving my life when I was holding the walker from chomping Lee and Clem.

I was super surprised when Hershel and Glenn showed up in the story.

It makes me wonder who else will show up in future episodes. I hope they don't go too overboard with it mind, just putting people in for the sake of putting people in would be really forced.

One thing that did make me smiles was the whole Athens thing. Anyone that's checked out my gamertag profile will know why.

Not having read the comics, and only having watched the first season of the TV series, I wasn't aware of any of the characters backstories... which to be honest, is how I think I'd prefer it...

Two small niggles I did have with the game:

There was some pretty bad framerate issues at certain points when the game is obviously trying to figure out which clips to play based on your decisions... And, why they didn't move the xbox notifications up to the top of the screen, instead of leaving them at the bottom where it can block your view of important, time-limited, choices, is beyond me...

I really enjoyed playing this game.

Just everything about it, the tension, characters, decisions, artwork.

Can't wait for the next one, wonder how much the decisions will effect you in the other episodes.

The most important part...

Episode 2 will be available "around the end of June"—the only reason there isn't a firm release date is that they're waiting to hear back on the certification process.

Please be 400 points. If you are I'll day one you.

I played episode 1 this week, and loved it. Great storyline, characters and interactions. Some of the scenes genuinely made me a little sad.

I was hoping ep. 2 would have been out by now. There's no real reason certification should hold up the PC version except wanting to release all 3 at once. Unless certification issues were "it isn't ready"

A PC release will follow on Friday, according to IGN. The PS3 version will also be out Friday in North America, though a European release has yet to be announced. Telltale PR rep Alan Johnson Tweeted that it will be "soon."

Finally.

I downloaded it, went to jump in and couldn't find it on my game list. Confused I went through my achievements and sure enough, Walking Dead was there. I couldn't find it for shit on my 360. Then I realised I got it in Texas and I didn't copy it across due to me not thinking I'd need it. <_<

Think I might pick up the first episode as I've heard good things about it.

I've got no real knowledge of the comics or TV series though.

I've never read the comics (probably won't until I know it's going to end), and only seen part of season 1 of the series and I loved the game. You don't need any outside knowledge of the story or characters to enjoy it.

Oh what? I started it earlier and got two achievements, and wondered why it still just said 100/100.

Looks like their up now.... so (just in case you did'nt know) if you want your gamerscore and achievements to match on your 360 and Xbox.com your going to have to delete your profile and then recover it.... then re-earn those achievements. I hope you know the answer to your security question (unlike me, when i last had to do this  ).

Sorry to derail the thread, but will I lose anything by deleting and recoving my profile? My profile is about 42MB.

EDIT: All done. :)

You wont lose anything. Any your profile is only 16mb? Mines like 40 odd.

So yeah, the curse of Texas strikes again. As I posted up top I downloaded Episode 2 and wanted to play it and it said I had to have Episode 1 before I could even boot the game up. So when Episode 1 eventually downloaded, I go to fire up Episode 2 and it is blocked off, so I have a bit of a dig and guess what? No save for Episode 1. That must be the reason Episode 2 is locked out I think to myself. So I play Episode 1 to its conclusion, go to start Episode 2 and get the same shit. I look back at Episode 1 and it says all the saves are blank. This confuses me, so I restart the game, only then it says 'play' on Episode 2. So I press play and it asks me if I want to create random decisions because I have not played Episode 1... <_<

So next time I play I am going to have to commit right from the very beginning again if I want my decisions to carry over, which of course I do, that's the whole bloody point of having to make the decisions. I was expecting to come on tonight and say I'd finished it one sitting. No such luck.

Anyway, I played through a pointless run of Episode 1 and really really enjoyed it. This is the 4th time I've either played it or witnessed it being played and it is still very engaging, the acting in particular is very good, and the more I look the more I see little touches that Telltale games have put in there. It's very very nice.

There is one thing though, one thing that I noticed this time around that bugged me quite a lot. Bear in mind that what the game tells you is that the outbreak was between 7 and 3 days (the newspaper in the chemist is a week old and Lee's story starts at the major outbreak 3 days before the episode ends). With that in mind, how come all the zombies are ripped up to fuck? I know this is really nitpicking, but there is no way the carriers would be as fucked up as that. The odd one might have had massive trauma or damage but there is no way every single walker would be as fucked up as they are this early in the time line. Even in Georgia with the heat I doubt every single walker will be knocked up as they are. I know I'm analysing too much but that is a serious oversight timeline wise. If you every play Episode 1 again pay attention to the zombies and you'll see what I mean.

Checked again, and it's 42MB. I edited while you were replying. Anyway, it's all sorted now. First time I've had to do that.

I've started Episode 2 again and playing through the second chapter at the moment. It's a bit juddery in places, isn't it? Love the art style though, suits the game perfectly.

Gutted to hear of your Texas curse woes. I managed to continue with my only save, and it then let me move over to Episode 2 where I continued as it should with some of my choices from Episode 1 being shown in the 'previously on The Walking Dead' section. :P
