Until Dawn

Started this again from scratch, so this is the third time I'm seeing the early choices.

I'm kind of tempted to play it nasty but I'm generally choosing stuff in line with my own personality. Also, knowing that one character has a crush on another, I held off from shooting the squirrel to help him along.

If nothing else, I want to see the whole house fucking.

So I ended up getting the same woman killed in the same way. I knew what was coming and I still couldn't stop it, I've no idea how I could've saved her, unless it was my efforts to get the sex.

Which as it's a teenagers in the woods horror game, that probably makes sense. They didn't even fuck though.

Edit: Actually she wasn't dead. Is now though.

Plus another got chosen for a saw to the gut.

So I ended up with 2 survivors. One death was particularly stupid on my part. I had been given a big hint but chose to ignore it and a young lass faced the music.

I enjoyed that for the most part.

The controls are a bit wonky, it suffers from early Resident Evil controlling a mannequin stuff which I guess is the price you pay for wanting great animation.

Also I was with it when it was a slasher flick...

....could've done without the supernatural stuff though.

3 survivors and 2 missing collectibles.

I actually saved 2 of them from the first run but doing chapters over if you've missed something, it ignores your current choices and goes by your original run.

I think the missing collectibles are down to whether one is alive at that point or not and the other is down to choices in a chase sequence.

Then right at the end one character bit it by my controller accidentally moving.

I have no idea how to save one character.

The main one. You know, that one.

Reading a guide, it looks like they only survive if you save everyone else.

Actually I think they did survive on that play through, I just didn't think they did, for fairly obvious reasons.

Calm down VR cynics ;), the VR game is just a small side project, I believe Shuhei Yoshida and Supermassive have already said they're in early talks for an Until Dawn 2 with whole new characters and a new setting.

Haha well, that's the most likely scenario in my mind.

I agree its senseless but I know how these marketing types think and if it's got a recognisable name on the front of it its more likely to sell, particularly with a new innovation like VR with so many new IP's flooding the market it gives consumers a name they can trust.

Also, I think the game looks pretty fun, incredibly shallow and probably over in a couple of hours, but fun nevertheless, I think people don't realise how much of a game changer VR will be.

I think VR will change absolutely piss all. It'll be expensive. Supported for a year or two. Then tank. Say hello to the Virtual Boy.I've certainly got no interest in it.

And id never for a second think of an "on rails shooter" for this game. Which is why i found it hard to believe when Nag said it.

Well it's already been supported for 4 years, Andy, and a consumer model is not even out yet! :P

I think the backing VR has got from Sony (100 titles in 2016), Valve and Oculus (100 titles in 2016) shows that it's already well supported and will be well supported for many years to come, Sony for one will not have spent Millions of $$$s of R&D on PS VR for it to be a flash in the pan, it may not stand the test of time but it will be around for the next 5 years at the very least (even Kinect lasted 5 years and that was shite). If you don't want anything to do with VR and have already made up your mind on it then fair enough, you're right it is expensive, no more expensive as a Phone or TV etc. I would argue, and the cost of a headset will come down in time (like most things), but maybe it's not for you, maybe it is, we'll never know.

I just think a device that can completely transport you into these great games we've all been playing all these years is an incredibly enticing and amazing prospect, and I just can't wait to get one and give it a go. Forget the Virtual Boy, forget the VR of the 90s and early 00s, you don't need a £25,000 Supercomputer to run these. This is 2016 VR with the technology which can actually run the headsets and fully entrench you into the experience, 240p screens at 12fps these are not.

The question I've asked myself for years before and after Oculus was formed in 2012 is 'is this all I want from games, to be looking at a Flat-screen having these type of gaming experiences for the rest of my life?' And the answer was no, I've always wanted something more immersive, and VR is the key to doing just that, it won't be for everyone and that's perfectly fine.

Also, the Until Dawn VR game is a Ghost Train/Rollercoaster ride, the link is tenuous at best, but it is there and it will be fun when it comes out (albeit shallow and short).

Well, clearly it excites you mate. And that's great,I'm not going to make fun of you for it,or rip it to pieces.

To me,I've no interest. At all. I highly doubt it'll make much difference, but maybe I'm wrong. Regardless, with me rapidly going through my sick pay week allowance,id never afford it anyway. So good thing I'm not interested really ?

I'm having a mixed reaction to this so far. I just got lectured by the therapist because apparently I'm not playing the game in a way that reflects what I told him about my fears. But when the choices are a binary "are you afraid of the dark" there's not enough room there for the truth. Do I value loyalty or honesty, well it depends on the situation.

I'm not a huge fan of cheap jump scares, I don't like the kind of films this is aping for that reason, so it's not a surprise that this has rubbed me the wrong way at points too. Also, fuck Chris. Maybe he gets better but I'm happy for him to die

Which is where I like this. The way it's structured is clever, or seems to be, I've not finished it to say I guess. But you kind of want your audience to dislike some of your cast if they're fodder, it's a free kill so you can set up the rest and have them be more meaningful.

There's also some good foreshadowing. I've just been to an area that I know features again later on (because I watched the Quick Look), so I was walked through with a few things being pointed out to me. Assuming that comes to something it's clever

yeah, the scene with him I've just got shifted my thoughts on him a bit. Same with Chris, once he drops the jokes he's alright.

I've enjoyed the past hour or so with it, it's a much better game now it's got going. I got another moaning at from Stormare, and the binary nature of the choices still annoys me, but that's games for you. I wrote a piece on Bitparade last week about choices in games, this is at times exactly what I was talking about

That being said, I'm really enjoying it now. I'm glad it's broken up a bit. I know it's not a long game, but it starts to feel longer than it is once you've been playing an hour, so taking a break isn't the worst thing in that sense, but it does seem odd to play a horror film over multiple nights
