UK Chart Roundup Week 45 2022

Quote

God of War Ragnarok is the UK's second biggest boxed game launch of the year, behind FIFA 23.

It means the PlayStation game sold more boxed copies in its first week than Elden Ring, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and the previous second place: Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

This is purely physical boxed sales, and as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was a significant download title, it's quite possible God of War wasn't quite No.2 overall (we'll get the download data later in the week). But even so, it's a massive opening week for the Sony title. 82% of week one boxed sales were on PS5, with 18% on PS4.

As revealed by charts company GfK last week, Ragnarok sold more in its first day than any previous game in the series sold in its first week. According to the data firm, the game sold 51% more units in its first week than the previous best-selling game: 2018's God of War. In just one week, the game is already the third best-selling God of War title of all time (and in terms of revenue, it is already No.2).

12% of PS5 God of War Ragnarok sales come from the official PS5 bundle. This bundle represented 60% of all PS5 consoles sold during the week, which is officially the biggest week for PS5 sales this year, says GfK boss Dorian Bloch.

That means Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's two-week stay at the top of the charts ends. The Activision Blizzard title falls to No.2 after a slight 39% drop in sales week-on-week.

The next biggest new game this month is Sonic Frontiers at No.4. The Sega game sold 5% more copies in its first week than 2017's Sonic Forces, although digital will likely extend that a bit. 40% of boxed sales were on PS5, 34% on Nintendo Switch, 14% on Xbox and 12% on PS4.

Next, Football Manager 2023 makes No.11, with boxed launch sales down 18% over last year's title (as a PC release, most of the game's sales will be digital).

The PS4 version of Stray launched physically, which saw that game return to the charts at No.23, while Tactics Ogre: Reborn comes in at No.24 and Cobrai Kai 2: Dojo's Rising debuts at No.28.

Elsewhere, the bump in PS5 sales means Sony's other big game of the year -- Horizon: Forbidden West -- jumps to No.7 after a 141% increase in sales week-on-week. We also saw an increase in Switch game sales with Mario Kart 8: Deluxe (No.5) up 34%, Nintendo Switch Sports (No.6) up 19%, Splatoon 3 (No.8) up 22%, Animal Crossing: New Horizons (No.9) up 50% and Minecraft on Switch up 42%.

huh, I didn't realise Stray came to PS4. Seems odd that they didn't put the PS4 physical version out when the PS5 version came out

UK Chart Roundup (Week 46 2022)

Quote

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is the latest video game to post huge launch sales in the UK.

It is the biggest boxed game launch of the year, with opening week sales up 4% compared with FIFA 23 (the previous biggest).

In fact, in terms of units, it is the second biggest Pokémon launch of all time, behind Pokémon Sun and Moon on the 3DS. Sun and Moon arrived during a period of huge interest in the series following the release of the smartphone game Pokémon Go (way back in 2016)

According to GfK, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet actually generated more money during its launch week compared with Sun and Moon. The average selling price was £35 for Sun and Moon compared with £48 for Scarlet and Violet.

Note: This data is purely boxed retail data. Download figures are not available for Nintendo games.

The Violet version accounted for 52% of sales, while Scarlet accounted for 42%, and the double pack featuring both games made up the remaining 6%.

Scarlet and Violet's first week sales are 25% bigger than the previous 'new generation' Pokémon release, Sword and Shield, which launched on Switch in November 2019. It's also 70% bigger than last year's Diamond and Pearl remakes and 56% bigger than January's Pokémon Legends: Arceus

The launch of Pokémon has also boosted sales of Switch consoles, GfK says. Switch hardware sales rose 62% week-on-week, led by the OLED model. It is the biggest week of the year so far for Nintendo Switch console sales.

Pokémon takes the headlines just a week after the huge launch of God of War: Ragnarok on PS4 and PS5. Sony's game drops to No.4 this time after a sales fall of 73% week-on-week.

Last week's other new release, Sonic Frontiers, drops from No.4 to No.10 due to a 64% fall in sales.

There was one other new release in the charts: The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil In Me, which debuts at No.16. The Bandai Namco horror title actually sold a little better than last year's House of Ashes.

Elsewhere, a number of PlayStation games jumped in sales due to pricing activity at major retailers. The Last of Us Part 2 re-enters the charts at No.18 due to a deal that saw the game drop below £10. Spider-Man: Miles Morales re-enters at No.26 (sales up 292%), Gran Turismo 7 is back at No.30 (sales up 228%), and The Last of Us Part 1 returns at No.38 (sales up 454%).

NPD (US) November 2022 Sales Data

Chart Source

Quote

A surge in PlayStation 5 hardware supply combined with strong sales of new games such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, God of War: Ragnarök, Pokémon Scarlet/Violet and Sonic Frontiers helped the U.S. video game industry reach 3% dollar sales growth in November compared to a year ago.

Here's the full breakdown from The NPD Group:

The NPD Group - U.S. Games Industry Sales – November 2022    U.S. consumer spending on video game content, hardware and accessories reached $6.3 billion in November 2022, an increase of 3% when compared to a year ago.

Performance was driven primarily by 45% growth in video game hardware dollar sales compared to November of 2021, led by PlayStation 5. Other market areas experiencing spending growth in November compared to a year ago included non-mobile subscription content, accessories, and digital premium downloads on consoles. November’s strong performance brings year-to-date spending to $49.0 billion, a 6% decline when compared to the same period in 2021.   Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II repeated as the month’s best-selling title in dollar sales while also becoming the best-seller for 2022 year to date. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was followed on the chart by three November new releases: God of War: Ragnarok, Pokémon Scarlet/Violet, and Sonic Frontiers.

Strong hardware performance in the month of November (45% increase vs. year ago to $1.3 billion) was due primarily to a significant increase in PlayStation 5 volume when compared to a year ago. PlayStation 5 was November’s best-selling hardware platform in both unit and dollar sales, while Nintendo Switch ranked 2nd across both measures. PlayStation 5 remains the best-selling hardware platform of 2022 in year-to-date dollar sales, while Nintendo Switch leads in units.   Accessories spending increased 10% in November when compared to a year ago, reaching $289 million. Double-digit percentage growth in both gamepad and headset/headphone spending drove the segment’s performance.

The PlayStation 5 DualSense Wireless Controller Galactic Purple was the best-selling accessory of November in dollar sales.

Mobile Spotlight (notes Provided by Sensor Tower’s Dennis Yeh)   Casino games experienced a continued renaissance in November, with the subgenre taking over the top spot by spend for the first time since September of 2020. Casino, Action, and Tabletop games were the only genres to see year-over-year growth (YoY) in spend while RPGs and Shooters continue to struggle. Thanksgiving and Black Friday did not bring a reprieve as spend during the week was down 5% YoY and 1% from 2020. Barring a meteoric (or catastrophic) final few weeks of 2022, annual U.S. mobile gaming spend should decease 1-2% from 2021.

November's top 10 mobile games by U.S. consumer spending were: Candy Crush Saga, Roblox, Royal Match, Coin Master, Clash of Clans, Evony, Pokémon Go, Township, Jackpot Party - Casino Slots, and Bingo Blitz.

The top 20 best-selling premium games of November 2022 were led by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, followed by November new releases God of War: Ragnarök, Pokémon Scarlet/Violet and Sonic Frontiers.

Quote

State of the Market

U.S. consumer spending on video game content, hardware and accessories totaled $7.6B in December 2022, an increase of 2% when compared to a year ago. Hardware spending grew 16%, offsetting declines in both content (-1%) and accessories (-2%).

2022 spending totaled $56.6B, 5% below 2021 levels despite growth in hardware and subscription content spend. Factors impacting 2022 spending included continued supply constraints of console hardware, a relatively light slate of new premium releases, and macroeconomic conditions.

I saw something saying the The Last of Us Remake had a huge spike in sales due to the series, but it doesn't look to have troubled the charts. Which either means it's gone from a starting point so small that a huge % increase doesn't actually mean much, or there's a lot of games being sold even at the bottom of the chart

The series hadn't yet come out for the time period in those charts. The latest UK one I posted above is the week ending Jan 14th (series came out 16th here) and the US one is for December 2022. So we should see it pop up in last week's chart here (week ending 21st Jan) and this week's chart (ending 28th Jan) and this month's NPD (US) chart when it's published towards the end of next month.

EDIT: Just as I was typing this I found out last week's chart had been published, which features TLOUP1 in 20th place and TLOU Remastered in 32nd place. So I guess there was some truth to it.
