wholehole
Wow. Hadn't even heard this was happening until now. Love the Legacy of Kain & Soul Reaver series. I own four copies of the original Soul Reaver on the PS1 I'll be throwing my wallet in with the rest.
Sambob
Wow. Hadn't even heard this was happening until now. Love the Legacy of Kain & Soul Reaver series. I own four copies of the original Soul Reaver on the PS1 One of my favourite gaming series, the gameplay was hardly groundbreaking, I always sort of saw it as PS1s Zelda in those terms, but I absolutely went hard for the story, something about it just hooked me so much. I did that thing that I really rate with story and it was believable within its own bounds, many series that go on over several iterations get tempted to throw in mad twists and turns that just dont seem right. Although this series had a few twists and turns they all seemed fine with how the writers had already set out their stall. Incredible voice acting turns from Simon Templeman and particularly Michael Bell helped too, hope they make returns.
HandsomeDead
I can't remember any of the particulars of the original on the PS1 but I know I liked it. So I guess I'm for the news. More excited about that Tomb Raider game. Get that finished first.
Sambob
On a scale of one to ten, how shallow does it make me that I don't care about that game because they made a point of downsizing her tits?
Sly Reflex
I hope they nail the voice acting and cinematics like they did n the original Soul Reaver. I still vividly remember the intro to Soul Reaver, it was so good. I loved the animation on Raziel too, it was so fluid for the time, leagues ahead of anything else at the time. That first game felt very much like a labour of love. The one thing I did love about it was the one vampire lord that was slain by the humans. Every level up to that you seemed to fight your way to the overlords and then do away with them to get your next power, I think this was the first (and only?) time where you have to revive the boss so you can do away with him. It felt very odd working my way towards him working out the puzzles along the way. That part of the game felt really desolate, more so that all the bits that had gone before it. I'm looking forward to see what they can do with this. I'm hoping that they sort out some of the problems I had with it at the time it was released. Aiming throws where just a best guess, and swimming was horrible as you couldn't attack, even though everything else in the water could. Iron those problems out and I'm all over this. Chinzon
Great that they're returning to the series, but I'm always a sceptic when it comes to "reboots". A HD remake would do me, too much can go wrong with a reboot. It's like remaking a classic film, what's the point? Why not remake a shit one and make it better? Anyway, my wallet will be with all yours. Didn't realise there was so much love for Soul Reaver around here. Collectively, we are awesome.
dante76
Also doesn't help that Tony Jay (voice of Eldar God) is dead...
Sambob
The Eldar God was one of the worst things about the game I thought, total Deus Ex Machina. It was very 'of the times' to have some big tentacle monster thing being in control of everything, Korea had the same thing.
Maryokutai
Maybe we can make this some general LoK topic or something. Because: This was spotted at SDCC next to a figure diorama of Raziel and Kain: https://x.com/Wario64/status/1816560879355244667 A few weeks back they also announced there was a new graphical novel in the works. Seems like that survey from a couple of years ago did move some things in the background after all. Was not expecting anything to do with this IP ever again, especially after all the Embracer shit hit the fan.
DANGERMAN
I never got around to the 2nd one because it didn't come to the Dreamcast, and by the time I got a PS2 I'd moved on. The original was great back then though
Maryokutai
It's been a while, but I preferred 2 over 1 back then. It's one of those 'the same thing, but better' kind of sequels so it's really easy to like if you're enjoyed the first one. I wonder how much effort they are willing to put into these projects though. I hope it's something like the TR collection, with a button to switch between new and old. And of course what the plan is going forward, considering there's a lot more to this IP than just these two games and it might be hard sell to newcomers if they're aware there's absolutely no conclusion when you only play these two. HandsomeDead
Maybe it's just my experience of the time but didn't the second game kinda flop? It's one of those early PS2 games that I don't think I've seen anyone talk about it in a deep way. The one person who had it at school was my friend who pressed me into playing the original by lending it to me but that energy wasn't there for the sequel. Maryokutai
It's the other way around. The first Soul Reaver was a massive hit that managed to pierce into the mainstream for a bit, probably due to release timing and the platforms it launched on. According to a quick search no other game in the series managed to pull that off, but it seems like they were all roughly in the same ballpark in terms of sales. Which by the time Defiance came along might have become an issue because of increasing development costs.
OCH
Amazing news.. Yet Blood Omen 1 deserves a remaster/remake the most! Meanwhile: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver graphic novel The Dead Shall Rise is a canonical prequel to the classic action game Quote It's been almost 30 years since Blood Omen, the gore-spattered first instalment of the Legacy of Kain video game franchise, wowed PS1 players. While that title was followed up by three official sequels – including the all-time-classic Soul Reaver – the action series has not received any new official content since 2003's Legacy of Kain: Defiance. (2013's planned multiplayer Nosgoth was a tangentially-related spin-off and never officially released.) All that changes later this year with the publication of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise, an official prequel graphic novel by writers Joshua Viola and Angie Hodapp, artist Juan Samu, letterer Jeremiah Lambert, with covers by Dave Rapoza and Aaron Lovett, and additional art by Jonny Bush and Ninja Jo. The Dead Shall Rise is the first release from new multi-media company Bit Bot Media, and if all goes well, potentially the first in a series of Legacy of Kain releases. Developers Crystal Dynamics has provided creative direction for the book and promises that the book is considered a canonical part of the franchise and will contain "never-before-seen ideas and elements from unreleased Soul Reaver lore." Newsarama can exclusively reveal Magic: The Gathering artist Dave Rapoza's main cover in full below, as well as the news that the book will include concept art by Daniel Cabuco, who worked on both Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver and Soul Reaver 2, and was the Art Director for Legacy of Kain: Defiance. The Dead Shall Rise's story explores Soul Reaver protagonist Raziel’s past when he was still a human warrior, leading up to his transformation into Kain's vampire lieutenant. The graphic novel also promises to introduce new characters, including a vampire with connections to both Raziel and Kain. "Raziel's story spans centuries, offering rich material to explore," said co-writer Joshua Viola in a statement. "Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise not only fills in the gaps but fleshes out his character in surprising ways, revealing what shaped him into the Raziel we know and love. We have lots of surprises in store beyond the graphic novel that will blow fans' minds." "It was important to Josh and me to find, after 20 years, the right place and time to re-enter this world," added co-writer Angie Hodapp. "We wanted to find new stories about these characters that felt organic to the original canon – stories that would excite longtime fans of the games with plenty of familiar elements, while also inviting new fans to join in. With that in mind, and with the directive from Crystal Dynamics to introduce new characters while keeping our story lens tight on the known cast, Josh and I explored Raziel's past... specifically, his human past and the genesis of his wings in the days before Kain cast him into the Abyss." There's no official publication date for Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise just yet, but we'll be keeping an eye on this one and will be sure to update you when we know more. one-armed dwarf
Wonder what it will offer over the current pc versions. I reckon they will do it like the Tomb Raider rereleases, that is more the approach I like for these remasters
