    Final Fantasy VI

When I've said in the past that Kefka is one of Final Fantasy's best villains. Now some who haven't played this before are starting to see why. He does a lot in this game.
  2. I was talking about this with someone regarding the original FF7, the other day. Yes the models always looked funky. But the lack of clarity made the models clash less with the prerendered backgrounds (which looked very good via CRT).

True. I think it doesn't help that they throw so many at you. I found I kept track of the Espers that cast Regen/Healing/Reflect on the party. But the ones that are only offensive attacks. I only kept to learn their spells. There were some I didn't bother looking at too. Because the animation for Espers on the field, isn't exactly exciting. That being those unique to this game. Some I couldn't even tell what I was looking at?
  4. Well said. JRPG's are one player games.
  5. As you're relatively "new" to FF and are working backwards. If you walk away from FF6 with an overall positive vibe. I would recommend FF4. You don't need to go earlier in the series than that point. If you feeling pressured/stressed by 6 IE when the series began to get easier/more forgiving. FF1 and 2, you will not enjoy. FF3, you don't really control characters, but "functions". The Job system was very rough in FF1 and they expanded on it with 3. But by the same token, the game isn't built to be completed with every job class, if that makes sense? Unfortunately the DS remake hasn't been ported. Which enhances the game quite a bit. FF 4, they realised that there was too much to the job system and instead you were given characters belonging to a job class IE Kain the Dragoon, Rosa the White Mage etc So 4 will be the least alien to you of the 2D series prior to 6. You'll notice I've largely left FF5 unmentioned. Honestly, I finished it once and don't really remember it. I was actually looking at it on the PS Store this morning (with a cursory glance at 7 & 8, too).
  6. This being an arty-farty rant I have with some saying older games look "ugly" on modern systems and ergo, need "remastered visuals". The problem is seeing a PSOne/N64 and prior, title on a modern console on an OLED/4K/Whatever TV. You're not even seeing them on the hardware they were built to be viewed with. Even those games that offer the CRT filter option isn't quite the same. It boils down to seeing these games with a resolution that even the original developer didn't have access to. That is making the game look not as designed or intended. Like a high resolution Bluray will highlight set or costume shortcomings in early black and white films.

I would recommend not using that Esper on ..any boss fight, going forward. It has a multi-elemental attack. I'm pretty sure it is intentional that most bosses from that point on are healed by at least one of those elements. As for the optional character
  8. You've played FF1-4, then?? I recently played through 9 and am currently playing through Rebirth. So scratch those two off. 8 and 16, eh? I'll think about them🤔
  9. RE: FF 13 It's a tech demo for a really interesting battle system, with a half-hearted story tacked on. It's not bad, per say (that's FF15, imo) but just not very memorable beyond it's mechanics. I will add that I would personally tap out of your franchise playthru for 13 or 15.
  10. I do wish FF5 and 6 got their DS remakes though. If they had, a port of the four titles would have been all that's needed today. I don't really think it necessary to do anything more with FF1 & 2 anymore.
  11. They've tried to classify Mutant powers over the years but there are too many distinctions and caveats. Forge, for example, was recently cited as an Omega Level Mutant. Because, in theory his powers to create anything could make a machine to end existence. But does that put him on par with Legion or Phoenix, who are also Omega Level? That's where it gets murky.
  12. I am looking forward to going back to it. Especially considering I've forgotten where I was? I think I was just about to go to the Gold Saucer🤔
  13. I really got the vibe the towers were lifted straight from Tears of the Kingdom. Someone at Square saw it, thought it looked cool and sought to recreate it without the context? The cushions at the rest stops? What even is that?? Why not just a save point? I also really dislike everything about Chadley. This reminds me I can return to this now I've finished FF6!

I think Trance is some kind of percentage boost at the end of a fight. But maybe dependant on if you finish the fight in the Trance state? I know it is a damage multiplier during the fight. But again, exact figures are hard to quantify.

Even I was caught out by some difficulty spikes in this, in spite of the grind. If I didn't have the game breaking spell (no name for that one either), I think the final dungeon would have been more of a challenge than it was. Which ramps up the difficulty one more time. Similarly the last boss is no pushover, regardless.
  16. The old joke for the noise used to be "It's thinking"
  17. Seems like someone already thought of the Octopath route for FF6.
  18. If it doesn't sound like a jet engine taking flight, is it even a Dreamcast?😄
  19. Late to this conversation (and the flirtations of Maf and Regemond), but to throw my hat into the ring: Don't bother. 1. £220 doesn't even get you at least one controller now? 2. The Dreamcast controllers are horrendous (especially the D-Pad) 3. Do yourself a favour and emulate instead.

😄 The area that reunites you with Locke gives you some foreshadowing of what to expect from the final dungeon.

I don't mind that at all. Contrary to the other games played by the forum. This is my neck of the woods. If you're feeling really masochistic, we'll go right back to FF1.😈 As per my last update. Everyone was around level 50. Be aware: You will need everyone to be around the same level, for the final dungeon.

Auto-battle is your friend in this game when it comes to grinding. My last party - Terra, Celes, Sabin and Shadow. I set up the relevant spells and multi-hit attacks and just pressed square. Many of the sub bosses of the final dungeon melted with this approach. Funnily enough. By end game, money isn't an issue (much like every other RPG, I guess). Getting Gau's Rage arts on the Veldt, for example. Gives you no XP, but still gives you money and AP. By the final dungeon, I had near the cap of 999,999 gil. There is an accessory that gives someone Gil Toss, late game. Which I imagine would pack quite a punch, if the character that equips it were useful. Speaking of late game stuff. How about getting the final Magicite/Summon in the final dungeon? It teaches two spells, one if X10 and the other is X1. Never found out what the latter spell did. I mentioned a shield side quest earlier. Fulfilling this quest teaches you one of the game breaking spells. However, the description of the shield doesn't actually tell you this at all. Unlike the espers, there is no indication that this shield teaches you a spell at all. It's a secret I retained in my terrible memory from CVG, back in the day. Lastly, with the secret stuff. There are a few point of no returns with those. If you are given an option, one of two things. You are locked in and Never see the second option again. Which, again you wouldn't know. For example, you pick up a Magicite. In the same dungeon, you find a hidden room that will upgrade it into something else. The original Magicite is in turn lost and doesn't count towards your list.
