Dragon's Dogma 2

I've honestly put the game on hiatus cause it's gotten too easy, and all the lovely immersive 'friction' (a word that's being so overused the past week or so that I'm going to also put 'it' on hiatus) was kinda going away for me. I'm think I might not complete it until a DLC releases and I've a bit more incentive, cause right now I'm levelling up and wondering why, you know? When I can sneeze at an enemy or look in the other direction, or go for a walk and come back and the pawns will have killed everything like it's FFXII.

I remember Bitterblack Isle being hard as shit, so that type of content will produce that for me I suppose. But being real, after about 20-30 ish hours of finding it amazing I'm at the other end now feeling a bit disappointed with it, and puzzled at some of its design decisions and priorities

I know there's a fairly decent change post game but I'm not sure how much challenge it would add... agreed that it could do with difficulty settings.

Has an expansion been mentioned? Tbh I'm not really holding out hope for that... but it would be a definite buy if it did.

It’s been a huge success so I don’t see why not?

That part sounds fun as hell. Love it when a game lets me get overpowered.

Just because we generally know that kind've thing before a game even releases nowadays... but yeah, I hope there is one.

You'd love the Sorcerer Pawns then @mfnick... Laurana can pretty much kill everything on her own now.🥰😂

Being overpowered eventually is nice in games like this. But where my issue arises is I think the game depends on having a sense of danger in its world, and it depends a lot on the player getting good at optimising the way around it with a portcrystal network

This second bit is still a thing currently in my playthrough, I enjoy discovering and thinking about ways to make the world easier to get through. But the world needs to also sort of meet me halfway a bit and make moving through it remain interesting, and that's where the plateau and massive dip in difficulty become its problem after a while. I think some level scaling would help things a bit, and maybe some changes in enemy composition. Like fewer encounters, but all of a sudden oh fuck, two drakes and an armoured cyclops and a pack of wolves, deal with this shit fucko or run away. But have it be something which gradually gets introduced to the game depending on the levels of all your vocations, and it would make Trickster even more fun, have them all fight each other.

When the danger goes away it also means you don't have to think as hard about preparing when you venture forth from civilisation. These are things which mods could eventually provide I suppose. It's just that a lot of the things which I mentioned as being really cool in this game really do depend on these things working with (or is that 'against'?) each other, literally 'friction' between the rugged edges of these systems. The game is too nice to you later on I think

I feel like Dragon's Dogma could take a leaf out of BOTW's book as well and be a bit more freeform in its structure, and relegate quests to like an optional extra. There's an element of freedom in it in the secret ways you can access later areas before they occur in the story, which I really like. They're harder than the path the story would give you too, which makes for an interesting incentive.

Holy shit this game throws a lot of information at you! Had a million tutorial pop ups in the first hour or 2. Seems fun so far though. The combat is ace!

Not sure how much I’ll get through though, im not really a fan of medieval settings - especially the language they use - but mostly the lack of quest way points is already causing me issues. It expects me to have a memory, which I do not. So I just tend to wander about getting myself killed by monsters I’m definitely not ready for. Pawns sometimes help but not always. But so far I seem to be in the right mindset where it’s not bothering me. I’m just having fun throwing anything and everything and seeing the creative ways enemies can kill me while Im climbing them.

The quests are probably the worst thing about this game... and I mean that in the best possible way.

Everyone out here complaining about Eve in Stellar Blade being a sex object. & I’m over here in DD2 rocking this badunkadunk with not a word said.

I won’t be changing this armour even if I find something better. No questions please.

In all seriousness though. I’m already 9 hours into this (had some time off work) & having a really good time. I love how quickly it throws levels and cool upgrades at you. Already beaten a couple of huge fuckers who were causing me issues before and got loads of money too. I’m starting to get tired of not having ‘purpose’ now though. Wandering about fighting shit just for giggles is starting to lose its lustre. As far as I can tell my main quests for something to do now involve being stealthy or finding a specific clothing set to get in the castle? This is easily when the game at its worse. Hate it. Really putting me off playing more. Probably time to consult a guide.

SB has a weird energy around it given that they apparently fired workers for criticising its character design, which is a big part of why it's gotten scrutiny like that. In DD's case it probably helps everything is unisex, see my earlier photo of my lion man running around with a wedgie

That first I’m hearing of that. I thought it was just being used in the culture war nonsense by people saying sexy characters aren’t made anymore because of woke nonsense. & people on the other side saying they’re virgins and should just watch porn instead.

Anyway, I went to a new town beginning with B (fuck knows the actual name). Yea I’m back to being an underpowered wimp again. Think I must have missed something. We all just die near instantly in the area and do barely any damage even though I just spent 80% of my money on the most powerful daggers they had. FFS.

Getting a bit tired of no proper fast travel now. It’s stopped being fun getting stranded in middle of nowhere when my ox cart gets blown up or when a quest sends me fucking miles away from anywhere.

This'll sound snarky and I really don't mean it to but the lack of fast travel was such a well known thing even from the first game... this should not be a surprise.

Turns out I missed the small checkpoint town and just done a cool battle at Melve. Feel like I’ve got a hang of the correct progression route again now and feel at the correct level again. Previously I made it to B town by following the cave paths next to the river when I was not meant to go that route.

Ok, anyone know how I can make my pawns direct me to an objective when they know it? One was directing me but I got distracted by a token and she stopped and can’t get her to do it again now. I’ve tried talking to her, swapping between quests and pressing up on the d-pad but she won’t take the lead again. Any ideas? From a google they’re meant to do it after you talk to them but mine aren’t?

If it was a chest or cave they were leading you to I'm not sure you can get them to resume leading you until they mention it again... for quests it's just pressing up again.

Im still in the open world. They do direct me again eventually but it sometimes takes 10-15 minutes or so which is a long time in potentially the wrong direction. Ah well.

Does that mean you’ve completed it or something?

Got one ending (Peace) then there's an option of either NG+ or reloading your save and doing things a little different.... that prompts a pretty substantial change to the world and the title screen.

Man the combat in this is so much fucking fun!! I’ve just changed my vocation for the first time, got a spear/magic hybrid and it’s incredible. Plus right into my love of throwing stuff and playing with the physics. One of its abilities is being able to pick up a bunch of enemies and bricks at once and throw them. Another just throws enemies literally miles but it’s much harder to use, got a huge build up but oh so worth it when it connects.

Got a few issues with how this game is designed but the good stuff is incredible.
