Most of the video in that tweet is focused on him and his team getting harassed online though, so not the most uplifting thing to watch. I don't even want to understand where those people are coming from, because a dude with African heritage who lost his father making a game about an African dude who lost his father seems the most natural extension of oneself towards a creative vision.

 

Anyway, as a white dude whose father is still alive, I played a few hours of the game so far and think it's decent, even if a bit simplistic (combat, exploration etc.). Haven't beaten it yet though, maybe it picks up with additional tools and moves.

It did seem to come out without much fanfare after people were hyped for that reveal, so I hope it ends up doing well for them

I glanced over the comments but quickly had to stop because I was on the verge of becoming homicidal.

 

I'll be honest, if I was in his position I'd just leave. The industry is pretty shit right now anyway and if the only redeeming quality of releasing a game people like and seeing the positive feedback gets turned upside down and you're faced with the bottom of the barrel of humankind throwing the most ignorant and dumb nonsense at you 24/7, then even a very personal project must become unfulfilling I think. I'd just go back to the TV show gigs if I was him.

Maybe it's games at this scale that are going to be most affected by these weirdos because they do need more word of mouth support than a mainstream game that can mostly power through this nonsense.

 

I mean the "indie" metroidvania is a pretty hard genre to stand out in as it is but it certainly can't of helped with cretins with a grudge not shutting up.

I've started it. I'll save detailed impressions for when I've played it more, but I will say that if it hadn't appeared on the Jeff Keiley thing I'm not sure it would have stood out. Not because it's bad or anything, more that there's a good one of these once a month. I played 9 Years of Shadows, I really liked it, no one else seemed to play it. That's how hard it is, and this at least got some spotlight. That's not to do it down, it deserves to do better than it is, and I hope they aren't just listening to the shit that's being thrown at them
