Guest Posted April 28, 2024 Posted April 28, 2024 Not 100% sure, still working out a lot of new stuff myself, but to me looking at those options they appear to be options which you should be able to switch on if you need at any in game graphics / performance menus. I didn't bother installing the Radeon software just the driver so no additional menus at all here.
spatular Posted April 28, 2024 Posted April 28, 2024 Maf - don't you have a 4090? if so yeah don't use any radeon graphics options 1
Maf Posted July 6, 2024 Posted July 6, 2024 Is there a way to let anything through the firewall that is published by microsoft, etc? I appreciate the security but my PC tries to block everything to death. I'm guessing I do want the firewall on, but does it have to be so uptight
Sly Reflex Posted July 7, 2024 Posted July 7, 2024 It's just one click when you start. It shouldn't be doing it every single time? 1
Maf Posted July 7, 2024 Posted July 7, 2024 I think I’m only having to give permission to programs once. There’s just so many. Particularly when Window’s firewall is blocking Window’s apps. I was just wondering if there’s some way to makeit recognise Microsoft published things and stop blocking everything
one-armed dwarf Posted July 19, 2024 Posted July 19, 2024 Remember when people rolled their eyes at Y2K TURNS OUT https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cnk4jdwp49et
one-armed dwarf Posted July 19, 2024 Posted July 19, 2024 The summary of it seems to be it's caused by an update pushed by CrowdStrike, which offers some sort of endpoint protection for businesses or something (I don't really know). Bank systems are fucked, airlines as well. I read a post on another forum where some guy said their entire emergency department was taken down as they were treating a heart attack (edit, misread, it was describing a situation which could occur though and likely has tbh given the scope of impact). It really does resemble those kinds of nightmare scenarios that anti-Y2K measures were designed to mitigate against back in the day Seen it be called the worst IT outage to ever occur https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2024/jul/19/retail-sales-great-britain-slump-12-government-borrowing-june-figure-lowest-2019-horizon-business-live Quote Shumi Akhtar, associate professor at the University of Sydney, said: Today’s technology outage — an unprecedented global crisis— sparked off in the USA, is now ominously rippling across the globe. This sudden, severe disruption halts everyday activities and starkly exposes the fragility of our heavily digitised world. From banking to healthcare, education to government, no sector remains untouched, highlighting an urgent need for a worldwide strategic overhaul of our critical infrastructures. This crisis calls for immediate collaborative action to enhance resilience through robust safeguards and fail-safes, especially in life-critical networks. As a result of this outage, at least three critical sectors could be affected significantly. In the medical industry, a technology outage can result in the loss of access to electronic medical records, critical patient data, and communication systems essential for patient care. This could delay surgeries, medication administration, and emergency responses, potentially endangering lives. In the banking sector, an outage can cripple financial transactions, including ATM withdrawals, online banking, and payment processing. This disruption can lead to significant financial losses for consumers and institutions, and undermine public trust in the financial system For the airline industry, technology outages can ground flights, disrupt ticketing and check-in processes, and affect air traffic control. This can lead to massive delays, financial losses, and compromise passenger safety and security. Each of these scenarios highlights the catastrophic potential of technology failures across critical industries. Dr Harjinder Lallie, cyber security expert at the University of Warwick, said: The worldwide IT outage experienced this morning is unprecedented in the range and scale of systems it has impacted. Although we cannot speculate on the cause of this outage just yet, it appears that this might be a server error emanating from one server supplier. This IT ‘catastrophe’ highlights the need for greater resilience, a greater focus on backup systems, and possibly even a need to rethink whether we are using the most resilient operating systems for such critical systems.

Maf Posted August 10, 2024 Posted August 10, 2024 Do people who have dual screen set up have both 4K? Or do you have one good one for gaming and a cheaper one just for the web browser and whatever on the side? Just trying to get an idea of what a normal set up should be
spatular Posted August 11, 2024 Posted August 11, 2024 i think get whatever screens you want doesn't really matter about normal setup. personally my tv (4k) is my main monitor, have a smaller second monitor to the side, recently upgraded this to 1440p. for work i'd like 2 monitors the same (27" 1440p) but don't have the room, so it's one monitor and the laptop screen.
DANGERMAN Posted August 11, 2024 Author Posted August 11, 2024 I have my main monitor, then I used to have my 4k TV for watching or playing certain things. I've just bought myself a portable screen that I can use as a 2nd monitor now, it's a bit smaller but it's fine as a reference screen
Maf Posted August 28, 2024 Posted August 28, 2024 Why do I always need to update my PC for games to run well? I was playing Elden Ring on Steam last night and it was running like shit. I updated every app and system thing on the PC and today it runs perfectly. Why is performance on games degrading if the PC isn't kept completely up to date? It's so annoying
one-armed dwarf Posted August 28, 2024 Posted August 28, 2024 I think you are misunderstanding why your games are running like shit, PC performance doesn't degrade unless there's something actually wrong. It's not like it's getting rusty or something if you don't update windows, it's not how any of that works They did just come out with an update which makes Ryzens run better but it's something you have to specifically opt into but it has nothing to do with Elden Ring running worse over time or whatever. ER is a particularly bad game though on a technical level so it's not a great example in any case imo you should look up more stuff about your cpu and dual CCDs/core parking. I can't explain what that is cause it's not something I have to worry about on mine so I wouldn't even be able to explain it but I bet it's a thing you're missing on
Maf Posted August 28, 2024 Posted August 28, 2024 I will Google it tomorrow. I’ve not heard of it before. Thanks!
one-armed dwarf Posted August 29, 2024 Posted August 29, 2024 There's imo an interesting experiment on monitor's unboxed to subject a QD OLED monitor to WFH productivity usage, basically 8 hours 5 days a week of non-gaming use with minimal mitigations (though it is running in dark mode) and half the usual compensation cycles. It's a useful data point cause this specific use case if you're currently looking at these for not just gaming but home office scenarios, where it just doesn't seem suitable for the latter Unfortunately some of the burn in results don't come across well on youtube compression but he tries to get around that with a filter in some examples He compares it at the end to his Dell QD OLED which has been used for gaming for 2 years but not productivity and is faring better as a result
Maf Posted February 4, 2025 Posted February 4, 2025 I know this is such a small thing but when pasting things to desktop does it never paste where the arrow is and just right after the ‘next slot’ or whatever. It’s like I’m just trying fucking have all this shit over here because I’m working on the bigger screen stop pasting shit underneath my work when I am clicking over here I don’t care about the vaccine conspiracies and whatever the fuck I would strangle Bill Gates just for this reason I don’t need any other
