Gothic 1 Remake

Sort of weird this came out just now, as I lined the original of this one as my Morrowind followup just today.

The original game is a very weird and hardcore kinda WRPG from the early 00s where the main character is controlled like it's been done by a chipmunk driving a tank, also some stuff in it about wizards, a miner colony and a King. The premise is you're a miner trapped in a colony that's underneath a big bubble created by said wizards, and it also goes into the micro communities that emerge within it. It and its (much more positively received) sequel received plaudits for having highly reactive worlds with lots of cool unique possibilities for different playthroughs.

Another trailer

This is clearly a trailer designed to set minds at ease if you played the original game*, while looking a bit baffling if you've not. Reason being is the demo from a few years ago was poorly received as being a bit too action focused, while this trailer focuses a lot on social interactions and the prison hierarchy

Looks like they've got the right idea though, ending it with the MC getting his face smashed in.

*or Elex, or Risen, which also do the same thing Gothic does

Don't think I've ever played Gothic (not sure why, as 2000-10 was my peak PC gaming period) - but I have enjoyed the Risen & Elex games - and the trailer has the same gritty edge that Kingdom Come Deliverance had, so sounds like it's my sort of thing.

Now whether I'll go for the Gothic Classic NS port, or just hang on for the remake, depends on price (& whatever else I'm playing).

They showed this off just now on the THQ showcase.

This looks pretty much spot on, basically a modern version of the old game and they're saying the right things and being pretty faithful to what that old game was going for, while also saying they intend to develop and enhance certain other aspects (which can be seen I suppose, in some of the interactions here)

It's clearly going to be a very low budget and janky thing but that was well within expectations, in fact probably seen as a good thing by lots of people

Hopefully this comes out and they don't get Embraced, and they get to do Gothic II which is the deeper game, tho not as interesting a setting as I

That was a cool commentary track, felt kind of earnest, in a PR way. Wasn't familiar with the developer so I looked them up and they're a new studio from Spain. Hard to say whether they're up to it, but a part of me thinks it's nice that it at least stayed in Europe.

Game looks fine so far. Visually rather pretty but very much in line with the original's aesthetic and there's more than enough jank here to make this unmistakably Gothic, which I think is a good thing. If this was an AAA proposition it probably would have gotten axed a while ago, while also losing all of its charm along the way.

ew what's in his eye

I do like the weighty and slow sword swings. It does look very different to the intro in the original, which is basically a couple NPC interactions, you fight weird chicken dinosaurs and then you get into the camp and a guy beats you up for not paying protection. Here it looks like there's quite a bit of questing and onboarding before you even get near the Old Camp

Anyway I'm going to join the sect of pot smokers this time, they seem cool

There's a demo out for this now, surprisingly. PC only I think. I think it's a prologue where you play a different character

Looking at this and comparing it to the new Kingdom Come, I wonder if it's not just going to seem a little quaint. It just sorta feels like that game is doing this in a big new way, but I guess that doesn't do the faction stuff that this does.

I mean you'd hope a game from 2025 would go further than one from 2001, though I suppose it's not necessarily a foregone conclusion either.

Too bad it's PC-only, would have liked to give it a try.
