HandsomeDead
I'm starting this thread because I've been playing this game. Some of you will know that I have bought an arcade stick recently, even though I only had the HD version of Darkstalkers to use a stick on. So since this game was only released about a month ago I decided to get it, just so I had a fighting game that was kinda in vogue. But this meant earning a new fighting game. Now I'm not that familiar with this kinda game so it's weird for me. It's a game where pretty much any move combos into another. I hear the Vs. Capcom games are often like this but I don't know, I' only quasi-familiar with them. I dunno what to say about it. You can pretty much make a combo of anything as long as you start with light attacks and work your way up with standard, crouching and jumping variants. Linking in some special and Blockbuster attacks will also do damage and impress. BUt that's all fighting game bullshit. What I do like is you only have eight characters (well nine now thanks to some free DLC) but they are all very different. And even the bread and butter character, Filia, is pretty damn fun to use so there are no filler characters. I don't really know what else to say about a game like this. I think it's a fighting game fan's fighting game and the stories are really cool but I can't go any deeper than that. Even though this version of the game hasn't been out long there is no-one playing it online so that is annoying. I got it hoping there would be a community. So sorry for the shite impressions but if any PS3 Skullgirls owners are lurking lets hook up. I wanna try my button mashing against people. spatular
this (well the old version i guess) was on a steam free weekend - i did some button mashing - it was fun. not sure i can add any more as my memory and fighting game knowledge is very limited. DC you should play some shmups with your new stick maybe well, i've got a stick and don't use it...but it's cool because it's like you're in a proper arcade and stuff. HandsomeDead
I may give schmups a go when I feel like learning a different kind of game. I can't say I'd be very confident at it, though. But anyway, back to Skullgirls. I still didn't get any online games so I don't feel like I've got to the nitty-gritty of the game. It has a pretty damn good tutorial mode so I think I understand it well enough, I think I would just liked to have seen it done first hand. I could just look at YouTube at pros but I wanted to see it properly, in-game, where I have to react to it. I could get some one-on-one ranked matches occasionally but I was looking for the lobbys where you can watch then go up when its your turn. What I found about SSFIV (and to an extent DoA4) is when you're in a lobby with people you learn so much from spectating and I'd rather have done some of that before tackling the ranked matches. I suppose now I've done a bit of single-player I could just dive in to the deep end but that can be a frustrating road. Maybe I'm over thinking it. Pretty much anything can be combo'd and windows for pulling off specials mid-combo is generous enough so I can't see whey some 'tactical button-mashing' can't see me through some ranked matches. I should just go for it.
Craymen Edge
But anyway, back to Skullgirls. I still didn't get any online games so I don't feel like I've got to the nitty-gritty of the game. It has a pretty damn good tutorial mode so I think I understand it well enough I've played a tiny bit of the PC version, and the tutorials are the best I've seen in a fighting game. Although I really like the art deco aesthetic, I don't really like the characters or how they're drawn.
HandsomeDead
Yeah, the aesthetic is nice, and it goes pretty well with the jazzy soundtrack... I think that's what it is.The characters are divisive thing and I'm not sure how I feel about it overall. Like, with Valentine, the ninja nurse character I think the idea is really cool what with mixing surgical masks and treating syringes as kunais and stuff, yet she's got the stripper nurse costume and the deep cleavage. But I went in knowing that the lead artist is gay and I think I can see something a bit 'queer eye' to to the characters that makes it different to something like DoA or parts of Street Fighter. But if the end result still has the typical flashing knickers and big tits in it then I dunno what that is worth in the end. It's something I enjoyed having a little think about while playing, though.Though I do find Valentine's 'blockbuster' legitimately creepy.http://youtu.be/oXvgIcDI8B0?t=1m5s (fucked up the embed again )
