DANGERMAN
I can't find a thread for this, in some ways I'm not surprised because why it seems like the sort of thing a few people would play, it was way overpriced. Gone Home is kind of a discovery game, you don't really do a lot, but the more you search the more you'll find and the fuller the story will feel. It's set during the 90's, you play as the elder sister of 2 just returning on short notice from a year in Europe. Your family have just moved in to a new house, you arrive late at night and explore as your character the house as your character does. I'm not going to go in to the story because anything I say about it will mean something you don't have to discover, but it's pretty interesting. I can't say I agree with all the praise the game got, the 90s nostalgia is pretty funny, and there's a good atmosphere to things, but I'm glad I waited for the game to be on sale
Craymen Edge
Seems like I've got a bad habit of only writing what I thought of games in the Completed Games thread. Here's what I said about Gone Home: Gone Home (PC) Basically, it's just using the videogame medium as a way of delivering a story. It's very very different to normal videogame stories, it's intimate and low key, but it drew me in, and the game does a good job of developing characters you never see just from notes and objects in the environment. I paid less than £10 for it in a sale, and felt perfectly happy with the few hours entertainment I got for that price. I feel like the £19.99 rrp is probably too much. Part of the issue with the price is that, despite being enjoyable 2 hours, that is all there is. It's a one time thing. There's no value in playing through again (apart from that sweet speedrun leaderboard, obvs.)* The commentary mode was quite interesting in places, but it's not a massive reason to go back once you've finished it, and it's fairly short anyway. *There's no speedrun leaderboard
DANGERMAN
I was a bit down on it in the op but I really liked the story. I'm glad I played it, and if we can get a few more games matching that story then all the better
radiofloyd
! just played this for 1.7 hours, according to Steam, so if it only lasts 2 hours then I must be near the end. It's been mildly interesting so far. In the room with the bells that you can interact with, I don't have the bell labelled "library". I went back to the library and searched all over for it but I couldn't find it - so I'm assuming that it's not a physical bell that I need to find, but something I need to do in the library to "unlock" the bell. But maybe I'm wrong.
radiofloyd
Finished this, it was a nice game. I'm not really into the environment being meticulously interactive, but at least in this game it made sense (playing the cassettes in the discmen was a nice touch). The actual main story of the game, delivered by audio diaries, wasn't particularly interesting, but they did a nice job telling the story of a family and giving you details about the parents lives.I liked the way you learned a bit more as you went along - and of course, the reasons why nobody is home. Like Craymen said, you won't want to pay €20 for this, but I still feel like I've played something worthwhile.
HandsomeDead
Oh, I played this recently, too. I think I have more or less the same thoughts as everyone else who has posted. It was nice. I guess I'm glad this kind of story has been told in video games, but it has been told elsewhere (for me personally, Gone Home reminded me of the C4 show, Sugar Rush which I remember seeing when I was younger 'cos of hot lesbians but nothing happened, it was mostly just a bittersweet drama I found myself getting into). I thought the 90s setting was cool; I liked Bikini Kill was on the soundtrack and the genesis of the love story was around Street Fighter. Cool stuff in my book. Overall though I just felt like the choir and it is the preacher, and there wasn't a lot else to get attached to. The story of the parents threatened to be interesting but it was mostly there just to give context to the main characters. I think it's a cool thing, but to be honest it's proof gaming still has a long way to go to catch up with other entertainment media. The execution was decent, but, y'know
