DANGERMAN

I've no idea how well this sold, it's certainly available cheap enough now, but so far it's been pretty good.

It's typical western rpg fare a la Diablo and Torchlight, only more po faced, lots of lore and all that. It also doesn't throw the special moves at you, you start out with 2 forms (for my character on is melee and the other range) and each has a a special move. Very early on you get a defensive move, which seems to equal some sort of healing move, handy for obvious reasons, but there's lots of health dropped by enemies and lots of save points that restore health too.

There's loads of loot dropped, it's all a bit weak at first, and everything from shops costs too much, but a few hours in and it picks up. It is a little difficult to tell whether one thing is better than the other sometimes, especially when it comes to the various perks (e.g. fire damage or vampire effect). You get teammates as you go through, I've only got the one so far but he's the melee specialist which means I can lob fire from a distance.

The main problem I've had so far, and it was the same in the demo, was that I walked in to a boss fight way too early. If you follow the road, or even if you realise that there's a way to get the bread crumb trail up, it leads you into a cave not far from the first town. The enemies on your way through aren't too bad simply because of all the drops, but the boss at the end of it is a nightmare. However, if you can get the game to register that you want to do a different quest (I've not had much luck) then there's a few others you can go and do, which coupled with a little bit of grinding will mean an extra level plus some better equipment.

That boss done the game picked up again. I got a teammate, who has revived me the only other time I died, learnt a summon spell, and have opened up a couple of new areas. I'm not sure how this would play on a console, and they've still not nailed the pc controls (too easy to press the wrong button if you're using keys to rotate the camera, swap stances and launch special attacks). I could do with getting some more sp too, not sure why that's not been increasing unless it's all equipment based. Anyway, really enjoying it so far, surprisingly so in fact

The AI of mobs is fucking retarded. We beat a boss yesterday that was more interested in pursuing me menacingly while having a sword shoved up its anus until it died.

The mana system is fucking horrible. It's like they looked at World of Warcraft to see how they dealt with mana/rage/focus and just tried to do something different because they could. None of the actions have cool downs, so if something happens like I mentioned above, you can be a proper spammy bastard. Cool downs and mana regens negate this. As it stands now I can do one combo and then volley four electro attacks. That just obliterates everything apart from when...

The ground is uneven. I am playing with someone else who is tanking for me. It allows me to go into a defence stance where I can lay down big AoE attacks, DoT and nukes. If I am fighting up or downhill I am fucking useless. The attacks just go through scenery or over the heads of mobs.

Spell aiming is hit and miss. I have a big circle I can put down that does DoT. There's no way to guess where it'll appear when I launch it. I specifically aim for large groups of mobs. Sometimes it hits where I want to. Sometimes it puts it down at my feet. Sometimes it even puts it miles away on the one lone ranged mob.

The electro spell is so OP. It's pretty much a one hit kill on everything bar big stuff and bosses. There was one boss that teleported around the room that I beat because the shot locked onto her even when I couldn't see her. It didn't matter when I threw it, it always connected.

Classes (if you could call them that) are supremely unbalanced. It took my co-op partner a couple of bars plus refilling attacks to do the same damage as I could do in one electro attack. Unless the floor is uneven. At first I thought this was to do with resistances but it works on literally everything. The spells you get to use are toss. The way you level up means bugger all. I'm sure there are stats in there somewhere but it shows you very little

The loot is fucking shit. Neither of us look any different from when we started, apart from the weapons we hold in our hands. Not that neither of us could get a good look because of the god awful camera angle.

When you are fighting bandits or any other human enemies, there are about a pool of 4 screams that they do on death.

The co-op is locked onto the first players screen, so that if you happen to go right to the edge, it teleports you right back into the middle of the fight. Not good when you are a cloth wearer.

There's practically no feedback when you pick something up if you are in co-op. Everything comes of the hosts head when collected.

The voice acting is some of the worst I've heard in recent games. It's hard to give a shit about anything anyone says because of it. If you are going to go down the route of having shit voice acting then at least go the whole hog and make it cheesy.

The windows on some of the context sensitive stuff is too small.

At one point my co-op partner went to save the game when I walked and triggered a cut scene. He missed it because of this despite hosting.

Pretty much the whole time I was playing it I was thinking about the technically bad games thread, which is where I was going to post if there was no unique thread for it. Don't get me wrong, there's bit I do like about it, but I can see a fuck load of flaws with it that should have been picked up when the game was in development.

Crikey

Given that you have limited attacks available to you (at least I did as the fire lady) I'm glad there's no cool down.

Everything else I either haven't noticed (like the multi stuff, it should really split the screen, stupid if it doesn't ) of hasn't caused a problem.

Despite my positivity in the op I thought the game just got dull. Bar sluggish loot and level progress I couldn't place why it didn't play as well as Torchlight or Diablo, but it does get boring

I do like it has an AFK mode if you spend too long in menus. It cuts the waiting about out if your partner is levelling up or whatever. That's the only thing I can think of off the top of my head that I really liked.

It got a bit of love over at Now Loading but I'm not sure why. It's real 3/10 stuff.

Still not as bad as Army of Shit 2. At least I can hold onto that.

I played some more tonight. Ranging all the way from technical, design, sound and graphical assets, this game is terrible. Dull and uninspired, it is an unmitigated example of how not to do a game.

There is nothing it does well. I played a bit of Dead Island over the last few days and although that game has its problems, its 10 times the game this is.

Terrible terrible game. I didn't think the loot formula could be done wrong, but Obsidian have proven me wrong.

I've actually held back on some of the ranting in case I do a technically bad games resurrection. It's not often I rant like fuck while playing a game, but when I do, it gets nasty.

I'll raise you Frontlines : Fuel Of War, and then I'm playing X-Men Wolverine.

it's the definition of not technically bad though, it's just boring and uninspired, there's nothing broken about it (on pc obviously, the 360 version could be a shambles for all I know). If you want a 'technically bad' Obsidian game, go and play anything else they've made
