This doesn't play anything like a normal Pokemon game, so far at least you don't even level up your pokemon. Instead you're handed a toy (they're all toys) Pikachu at the start of the game and have to work your way through a forest. Along the way (and each section is pretty short) you fight other pokemon, in real time by hitting the A button, and when they die/break they either drop money or become collectable. This is how you get more pokemon.

Generally speaking the more recent pokemon you collect will be more powerful than what you currently have (you can hold loads), so you switch them in if you need more power or if your current mon is running low on health.

You can buy new moves but as you dump your pokemon so regularly I'm not sure what the point is. There's boss fights, and rumbles (battle royale fights) to end areas, and your types do matter, but that's about as complicated as it gets

I was really enjoying it at first last night, and there is something about returning to areas to try to collect the remaining mons, but it does appear to just be the same thing over and over
