  1. Lae'zel in BG3 was very forward - I'd barely had any direct dialogue with her, then following one fight she just initiated a dialogue along the lines of "I like the way you do things, let's hook up next time we're in camp !"

And that was it, and away we went....

Can't recall any other game that put it out there quite so easily (esp. after the laborious pursuit of Rank 10 Social Links in P3 Reloaded).

  2. OMG what an unholy mess the camera makes of trying to manage combat when it's split over different floors/levels.

Other games simply base this thing on a cube like grid, simply allowing you to move up & down floors/levels to select target areas, but here you just seemingly have to try to zoom in/out/rotate in order to try to hit the sweet spot..... bleh !

  3. It's more that you have no idea of the difficulty level until you commit to making a 'dialogue driven' skill test (R3 tooltips just give you your modifiers) - whilst for combat it shows you the % chance before you commit to an attack etc : so the game's own logic (in showing it for one thing and not the other) is somewhat illogical.

i.e. I've had a couple of skill checks that were difficulty 2 and others that are difficulty 15 and there's no indication, before you commit to taking the test, of what that difficulty level might be - and it doesn't seem to let to go back & avoid a test once you've picked it.

  4. I'm about 8 hrs in now, and whilst I'm really quite enjoying it, the universal acclaim (and sweeping the board at the BAFTA Awards) is utterly baffling.

There's just so many poor interface decisions (maybe exacerbated by me playing on a console) and odd / poor gameplay mechanics - when compared to things like the Pathfinder, Pillars of Eternity, Solasta, Wartales or even D:OS. Feels to have got a bit of a free ride due to the popularity of the official licence and how really nice it looks.

The hidden skill check thing makes absolutely no sense when in battle you are clearly shown a hit % (why would you know that if you don't know the likelihood of passing other (non-combat) checks before committing to them !?!?).

Definitely not a bad game, but I do wonder how many people bigging it up have played many other CRPGs (albeit if they hadn't I don't think BG3 is particularly welcoming, with it's lack of clear system introduction). Notable perhaps that both Pathfinder games got 34 Critic Reviews on Metacritic, D:OS 39, D:OS2 46 whilst BG3 has 119.....

  5. Well I loved that first episode of Fallout (albeit I'm pretty sure anyone who hasn't played the game will have no idea whatsoever what's occurring....)

  6. Whilst I'm not necessarily endorsing it as a great film, I think Birdbox really captured the Lovecraftian horror thing pretty well - with people being driven incomprehensively insane if they see an Eldritch being - unless they are already insane and then they venerate it.

The whole "oh look that's scary, better blow it up" seems a big cop out.

  7. They should finish each episode of Fallout TV series by Preston popping up and saying :

    "Another settlement needs our help..."

  8. Underwater - there was a whole bunch talked about this on the HPL Historical Society FB group - mostly around how the director kept the monster's identity 'secret' from the studio.

I sort of like the movie in some ways, but a cataclysmic ending would have been much more suitable.

Mamoudou Athie was pretty good in it too, albeit much better in the Netflix adaptation of the Lovecraft themed series "Archive 81" - damn shame that didn't get renewed.

  9. Started last night (Series S) and I'm actually amazed just quite how woefully poor it is in terms of giving you any particular tutorial explainations (outside of basic controls). I've played loads of CRPGs and this is by far the worst at not really guiding you through the early game mechanics. I get that exploration & trial/error are somewhat fundamental to CRPGs, but not even being aware of how you trigger ABC in order to even do XYZ is really bad.

So too it seems is how it commits you to making a skill check roll without any prior indication of the difficulty of the test (or showing you what modifiers you have that might aid you). Pathfinder Kingmaker & WotR always showed you prior to committing to test it's difficultly level and the character who had the best modifier, so you could then choose whether that was the best option to take or if you needed to potion up or level up before proceeding that way, but here it's really irksome that it doesn't (it's not even realistic that your PC wouldn't at least have a hint of an idea of this prior to committing).

    Argh - rant over.

It all looks very nice and the first 3 hrs have flown by.

Fortunately my missus has played it for 100s of hours so is giving me some game mechanics guidance (what's that, press up on D pad to quick select jump.....)

  10. Oh well, I'm now 3 hrs into Baldur's Gate 3, but I might come back to P3 Reloaded one day (it's not exactly a complex system to refamiliarise with) - but even the slack 'social' days between 25-30 Dec felt a little dull & irksome (even spent time napping in my room to pass time, as didn't have any obvious Social Links to progress), so not sure I really want any more of it right now.

Actually a return at a later date might even include doing that Aigis DLC too.....

Your support and comments really helped my through to at least some conclusions (and it wasn't exactly a bad ending by any means).

  11. And done !!!

    Well...

    sort of....

it was the end of December ending !

    Spoiler

Now if you can convince me that I can carry on to Nyx and it'll be over in less than 5 hrs, I might give it a go - but TBH I'm sort of happy with the alternative ending, and I'm not really sure I'll get any more joy from grinding on further to another ending and a big boss battle.

I'm happy that I stuck with it, was great that @Maf was doing a run through too, and gave me the encouragement to stick it out longer than I might otherwise.

  12. Was there ever any support for the AR feature on the 3DS (aside from the bundled cards/game) ? Think there was a 'spirit camera' Project Zero type game.

I never owned a 3DS - but still occasionally play on my DS Lite.

  13. The Wii is the console that I, by far, bought the least games for - but I did enjoy many hours of fun with games like Mario, Zelda, Zak & Wiki and inc multiplayer Mario Kart, Wii Sports, Big Brain Academy etc.

So can't be too hard on it overall.

  14. Accessory I used least has been the RingFit (albeit I know it was hugely popular with some, but just didn't do it for me) - would have been better for me if you could actually use it with the NS screen (rather than docked to TV) but the RingFit game just wasn't really configured (screen icons not big enough) to reasonably allow that, whilst exercising a safe distance away.

Albeit I also bought a Wii Official SD Card at the same time I got my Wii, and that's still BNIS.

Worst console was original GBA, with it's woefully unlit screen (ended up with one of those awful 3rd Party 'light magnifiers' attached to it, just so I could reasonably play at times) - whilst ironically the GBA SP was later one of my favourites (hence GBA had lots of great games, but initial hardware wasn't great).

Special hand wincing shout out for the DS Guitar Hero add on - really great in theory, actually worked reasonably well too - but the hand cramps......!!!!

  15. @Maf Re Kyoto trip

    Spoiler

Guess the part you referred to is the Hot Springs bit - I got busted trying to hide by the rock, guess the steam gives a different outcome !?!?

Wasn't spectacularly bad anyway (unless I missed some pixelated nakedness ....)

  16. I don't mind a bit of the social stuff, but thought I'd be steaming into end game territory rather than spending 90 mins on; a field trip to Kyoto; a small amount of important main plot action; and now work experience...

I think it's a funny list.  It says it's a poll from 4000 people from around the world but who around the world is keeping an eye on BAFTA polls?  Lara as no.1?  Sackboy there at all?   These are mostly British games industry types.  I bet Manic Miner was no. 21.

    You mean "Miner Willy"......

  18. Okay - I'll break cover :

I had no idea Ellie from TLoU had a surname !?

Don't recall it ever being mentioned in the games or TV show.
