Yeah, those moments that overlap with your personal life will always result in the strongest responses. I had a similar moment when playing Memoir Blue, whose central theme is the sometimes good, sometimes rocky relationship of the protagonist and her mother. My mother wasn't doing particularly well at that time and I wasn't there for her as much as I could and should have been, so that was an emotional whirlwind I never experienced in a game before.
There have been other games, without that personal link, that left me a bit empty and drained at certain moments. The finale of Life is Strange ('The Big Rewind'), which made me stop playing games for a few days because I was unable to step into another narrative. Halo 4's ending, which is still so weird to say because of the series' history, but that was an excellent execution of the idea of a hollow victory. Some of the short stories in Lost Odyssey, particularly the one with the shoemaker, were quite tough to swallow at times, too.
