Sonic 1

Had a little go on this seeing as how i went straight to Sonic 2 back in the day.

Its not bad, its got the good old addictive elements of getting rings and trying over and over to get through the levels. However the one thing I have kept saying is that its one of the least rewarding games ever, i must have forgotten that there was no option to save, at all. If you are good enough to get to the bonus stages then you can store up continues from getting a certain amount of rings.

I was either a much better gamer when i was younger or I have just repressed the memories of incredible stress. I wouldnt recommend this unless you are looking for a way to build up an Incredible Hulk inducing rage.

I see the original Sonic through rose tinted glasses. Its the game that made me buy a Megadrive and that led me onto many a classic, so I salute the original Sonic - it was truly a gaming stepping stone for me.

It has addictive gameplay, a classic soundtrack and at the time I loved the whole speed thing it introduced. I always found getting the Chaos Emeralds a real challenge but im fairly sure i got them all as a kid, those sort of frustrations were part of the parcel before save points were common place. Hardcore gaming, you just attacked the game again and again untill it was beaten. It was a colourful little game too, Green Hill Zone and Casino Zone in particular - Greenhill Zone with its bright blue sky, red earthy platforms topped with lush green grass and the Casino Zone's flashing neon lights everywhere the eye could see.

At the time it was stuff of legends.

Ive got to say that the music is really pretty catchy but I preferred the Sonic and Tails games to the original one. My fave was Sonic and Knuckles, I liked the idea of levels being approachable from a few angles.

For me Sonic 3 is the pick of the series, but I can still (and did the other day thanks to mega collection) sit and waste a sunday playing the original. The cube pad isnt really suited, and there were a few teeth grinding moments, particularly towards the end, but i probably appreciate it more now than when i was a kid

Same as me, man. Made my eyes near as dammit pop out of my head! I knew it had to be mine. I was convinced that the MD would soon start literally smoking. And I was gobsmacked that it didn't.

I got Sonic and the machine for my birthday in April (same time SNES came out, but I wasn't interested, Sonic was my man!) and due to lack of fundage for a 12 or 13 year old, I had to wait till Christmas till I could get a new game. The horror.

Therefore I played that bad-boy inside and out. I only started getting bored of it when it started getting close to christmas and I knew a new game was on the way. Obviously, I played other games (rented or borrowed) but for the best part of a year that was all I had.

And I loved it.

And the last time I played it on the Mega Collection on GC (same as Ben) it still rocked my world, and has aged brilliantly.

Sonic 1 came first and so that has a place in my heart as one of the best games ever. The 2nd and 3rd may have been bigger and technically better, but the first gets me every time.

Yeah, I know I shouldn't have, but I bought this for Live Arcade. Bare with me on this!

I didn't buy it for the achievment points, but rather the achievement challenges. As I've said before, I don't care much for the points system, but the challenges (when not retarded) are absolute genius.

Other than the stupid "get an emerald", "get 100 rings" and "complete Green Hill Zone" ones, check out these bad boys.

Beat Green Hill Zone Act 1 in under 35 seconds.

Beat Marble Zone Act 1 in under 80 seconds.

Beat the game in under 40 minutes.

Beat the game without dying.

Now, these are the things me and my mates used to do back in the day! Everyone who has a copy of this game (whichever version you have), see if you can do these.

I know ill has done, but bloody hell, try completing it without losing a single life!

I sat and completed this this morning on the NGC. I really hate Labyrinth Zone, but apart from that it's still holds up. Bits of it look really barren though, and it was really easy, it took me about 80 minutes from start to finish. The music is superb though, I wanted to sit for a bit and enjoy the Starlight Zones music, it really is awesome. Onto Sonic 2 next.

I tend to play through Sonic and Sonic 2 at least once a year, so when I got the XBLA version I pretty much walked all of the achievements. Not that I'm boasting or anything. :D:blush:

I was bored so played this quick on the Switch and found something called the Mega Play version. Seems like an arcade version of the game with some weird differences. First you only have 1 life, the timer counts down instead of up, and they remove all the slow levels. So no Marble Zone, Labyrinth Zone or Scrap Brain Act 3 or Special Stages. Also comes complete with tremendous slow down if too many things happen at once. Can’t tell if that’s intentional or not.

Of course I got through it first go 1 life hedgehog no problem for me 😎

But looking at the options the fact you can mix and match the JPN version, International Version, the arcade version and add in the spin dash and drop dash, + all the other modes in this game it’s a really nice version of Sonic 1.

I’ve also never played Sonic 1 with the spin dash or drop dash before (I think this is the only version that has drop dash) but, not that there was any debate anyway, but if you ever needed proof these were genius ideas here’s the best example. Take an already amazing game and these extra moves make it so much better. Some of the really annoying traps in Scrap Brain are much easier when Sonic can spin dash across the revolving floor tiles, over retractable floors and under the flame throwers.

Which, by the way being able to boost across traps is such a cool game thing and something so cool in Sonic games. Even now being faced with really fast traps and then being too fast for them is sick. It looks so cool and a really good feeling.

Anyway, the Mega Play version is weird but novel. A cool extra thing in this package which I think I might have overlooked too hard when I first got it. It’s weird it has slowdown but this is a really feature rich version of the game and great for times like this where you just want something to do for 20 minutes. Bang. Pick up the Switch, Sonic’s ready to go.
