Hendo Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 Bought this last night and I love it! Bizarrely I've definately played it before, I certainly recognise the first level. Maybe on an emulator? Anyway I can see why people here love the DS versions, as they're like old skool with more depth. Thumbs up so far!
illdog Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 Nice one H. I bought this yesterday, my first VC game and I played it for 1 hour and 35 mins according to my Wii. Its such a great game, the first level music is bloody outstanding, but its when in starts getting hard the game seems to kick into its own. Level 8 is absolutely rock, i spent 45 mins trying to get through to the boss but its so worth it, cos the reward is Level 9, the golden treasure trove ,with some of the best music in the game. I always used to struggle on it as a kid but I bezzed through it this afternoon. Level 10, the clock tower, awaits...
Hendo Posted December 30, 2006 Author Posted December 30, 2006 I really am enjoying this. I'm not sure which level I'm on, but I think it has swinging chandeliers. It doesn't start off very impressive and hasn't aged too well, but when the mode 7 stuff starts flying round, the level design really kicks up a gear.
James Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 I remember rushing out on my thirteenth (I think) birthday to buy this game for a whooping £29.99 from the local Dixons store and dragging our heavy living room television set up to my bedroom just so that I could play it without anyone disturbing me. It was hard at first, the Clocktower stage being a real pain in the ass, but at one point in my youth I was able to fly through the whole game with no problems at all...happy days. Look out for this little life saving secret fellas:

retroed Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 Hmm, despite having a cart of this for the SNES, it's been barely touched. I'm thinking of downloading it later and cracking on with it. The save state works with this I assume? I swear I'm spending more time on the Wii interface / Wii Shop, than actual Wii games.

I still think this is the best castlevania i've ever played. the DS/GBA ones were great, but a bit too long winded for me
Noize Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 This game is the best Castlevania that was made before they made the jump into that exploration action RPG genre with Symphony of the Night. I place this one at the top first position, with SOTN on equal grounds as the best Castlevania game ever.
illdog Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Alright! Got to Dracula last night but im yet to fight him as i was sleepy. The last two levels are absolutely rock, The Clock Tower is just annoying but that last level is just tough as fake tits. Extra tricky platform jumping under pressure and three (count em) bosses before you even meet The Count. Phew. Luckily the music is stunning throughout this last part so even though your tearing your hair out your still singing away. So worth it tho, the ending is tranquility itself and the music is so gnarly i wanna fucking cry. Cant wait to see it again.

So far I've also downloaded 3 other games which are all great in their own special ways: Legend of Zelda (NES) Bit of rose-tinted glasses on this, but fuck me I'm sure it's way tougher now that when I played it as a nipper first time around! Gunstar Heroes (SEGA) Played it on the Megadrive at a mate's house one summer yonks ago, but am loving it on my telly right now... it's a great little game. Ice Hockey (NES) Wanted to see some sports pre EA 'big-balls-no-dick' polished Sports era game. This one is surprisingly deep, even allowing you to choose the obesity level of the 4 team platers which affects your playing style! Mind you, it's rock hard and I keep getting tonked more often that I'd like. Even against the Polaks! So the challenge is there in single player... Seeing as I've got some of Mum's Wii Points Crimbo pressie left to burn for now, does anyone have any thoughts about recommending Ristar (SEGA) as another one before the big guns start to hopefully arrive on the Virtual Console? :dry: Steve
Guest Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 good choices there bar maybe Zelda I think that one is best left alone, I prefer to hear about it with rose tinted glasses same with the first 2 final fantasy's. Toejam and Earl wouldn't be a bad choice as it is a cracking game 1 or 2 player, this game (Castlevania) obviously is worth it, other than that the rest are only really good for nostalgia apart from the ones you have, so the point being if you liked it back then buy it again. I never played Ristar myself. If you liked Gunstar Heros I think Super Probotector (Contra3) is on it's way soon so maybe saving some points is a good idea (I wish I had I blew all mine on the likes of Golden Axe, glad I did though)

Fling yourself towards the Gunstar Heroes thread and put your comments in and I'll whack 'em up in the review. We could do with Zelda, Toejam, Ice Hockey and Ristar threads if anyone fancies getting their hands dirty and getting a review up!
Hendo Posted March 11, 2007 Author Posted March 11, 2007 Though you might not think so, seeing as I haven't updated this for ages, I've been playing this off and on since I got it, and today I finally got past the level I was stuck on which was level 8. So, I've defeated Frankenstein and a big bat, next I believe I have a mummy and then the end is in sight. Hopefully I can have this finished this week! I'm on a mission to finish a load of VC games before I buy another batch. I can't stress enough how much I love this game, even though it's frustrated the hell out of me (and i think illdog said the clock level is super frustrating, which is the one I'm on now). I love old school platformer/action games like this. In the off-chance that anyone here hasn't played it before, this should be one of the first you buy.
