Hendo quoted Leaders of the Free World by Elbow

But I think we dropped the baton like the 60’s didn’t happen. Oh no.

Great lyric that.

And Ben's Shellac - Prayer to god was excellent.

I present to you the second and fourth verse of Passin Me By by The Pharcyde.

Verse 2

When I dream of fairytales I think of me and Shelly

See she's my type of hype and I can't stand when brothers tell me

That I should quit chasin' and look for something better

But the smile that she shows makes me a go-getter

I haven't gone as far as asking if I could get with her

I just play it by ear and hope she gets the picture

I'm shootin for her heart, got my finger on the trigger

She could be my broad, and I could be her (nigga)

But, all I can do is stare...

Back as kids we used to kiss when we played truth or dare

Now she's more sophisticated, highly edu-ma-cated

not at all over-rated, I think I need a prayer

to get in her boots and it looks rather dry

I guess a twinkle in her eye is just a twinkle in her eye

Although she's crazy steppin, I'll try to stop her stride

Cos i wont have no more of this passin me by...

Verse 4

Now there she goes again, the dopest Ethiopian

And now the world around me be gets movin in slow motion

when-ever she happens to walk by - why does the apple of my eye

overlook and disregard my feelings no matter how much I try?

Wait, no, i did not really pursue my little princess with persistance;

And I was so low-key that she was unaware of my existance

From a distance I desired her, secretly admired her;

Wired her a letter to get her, and it went:

My dear, my dear, my dear, you do not know me but I know you very well

Now let me tell you about the feelings I have for you

When I try, or make some sort of attempt, I symp

Damn I wish I wasn't such a wimp!

'Cause then I would let you know that I love you so

And if I was your man then I would be true

The only lying I would do is in the bed with you

Then I signed sincerely the one who loves you dearly, PS love me tender

The letter came back three days later: Return to Sender

Damn!

She keeps on passin me by...

While i really wanted to post R Kelly's hip hopera, i decided against it and have gone for some Tom Waits. 2 fairly recent songs, and in truth I coul have picked just about anything he's done

Table-Top Joe

Well my mama didn’t want me

On the day I was born

I was born without a body

I got nothing but scorn

But I always loved music

All I had was my hands

I dreamed I'd be famous

And I’d work at The Sands

Singing, Tabletop Joe, Tabletop Joe

Now everyone will know

That I'm Tabletop Joe

I had trouble with the pedals

But I had a strong left hand

And I could play Stravinsky

On a baby grand

I said, ‘I’m gonna join the circus

Cause that’s where I belong’

So I went to Coney Island

I was singing this song

Tabletop Joe, Tabletop Joe

Now everyone knows

Yeah I'm Tabletop Joe

They gave me top billing

In the Dreamland show

I had my own orchestra

Starring Tabletop Joe

And the man without a body

Proved everyone wrong

I was rich and I was famous

I was where I belonged, yeah

Tabletop Joe, Tabletop Joe

Now everyone knows, yeah

Tabletop Joe

Misery's the river of the world

The higher that the monkey can climb

The more he shows his tail

Call no man happy 'til he dies

There's no milk at the bottom of the pail

God builds a church

The devil builds a chapel

Like the thistles that are growing

'round the trunk of a tree

All the good in the world

You can put inside a thimble

And still have room for you and me

If there's one thing you can say

About Mankind

There's nothing kind about man

You can drive out nature with a pitch fork

But it always comes roaring back again

Misery's the River of the World

Misery's the River of the World

Misery's the River of the World

For want of a bird

The sky was lost

For want of a nail

A shoe was lost

For want of a life

The knife was lost

For want of a toy

A child was lost

Misery's the River of the World

Misery's the River of the World

Everybody Row! Everybody Row!

Misery's the River of the World

Misery's the River of the World

Everybody Row! Everybody Row!

You can't go wrong with any of Tom's lyrics can you?

So many genius lines....

"I spent all my money in a Mexican whorehouse, across the street from a Catholic church.

And I wiped off my revolver and buttoned up my burgundy shirt."

I like the Barenaked Ladies, 'old apartment' let me see if i can find the lyrics:

Broke into the old apartment

This is where we used to live

Broken glass, broke and hungry

Broken hearts and broken bones

This is where we used to live

Why did you paint the walls?

Why did you clean the floor?

Why did you plaster over the hole I punched in the door?

This is where we used to live

Why did you keep the mousetrap?

Why did you keep the dishrack?

These things used to be mine

I guess they still are, I want them back

Broke into the old apartment

Forty-two stairs from the street

Crooked landing, crooked landlord

Narrow laneway filled with crooks.

This is where we used to live.

Why did they pave the lawn?

Why did they change the locks?

Why did I have to break it, I only came here to talk

This is where we used to live

How is the neighbor downstairs?

How is her temper this year?

I turned up your tv and stomped on the floor just for fun

I know we don’t live here anymore

We bought an old house on the danforth

She loves me and her body keeps me warm

I’m happy here

But this is where we used to live

Broke into the old apartment

Tore the phone out of the wall

Only memories, fading memories

Take me back to all time lows

I want them back

I want them back

Loved this thread so i'm giving it a bump

Everclear - Fire Maple Song

Turn away from the pain you don't want

Turning down to avoid them when they call

Strange words I heard a long long time ago

I wish I could go back to a summer time I knew more than twenty years

ago

Lay between the sheets we lie underneath the maple tree

Now I can't smile

Lying down in the grass with the wind around us as we smile and talk

Listen to your Grandma sing those country songs

She'd tell us how the maple turns to fire every four years

We'd lay in the grass all summer just to watch the autumn come around

I can't smile

Now I can't smile

I live alone and you're so far away

I call you every year just around the holiday

I still see you in the night lying above me in the grass

I can't smile

Turn away from the pain you don't want

Turning down to avoid them when they call

I can't believe this letter that says you died

I think I'm gonna go back to the house in North Carolina and lay in

the backyard

Get drunk and let the leaves just bury me

Bury me

I can't smile

Now I can't smile

I don't know what's happening to me

I don't know what's happening to me

I can't smile

Art Alexakis is one of my all time favourite lyricists, some of his stuff is just incredible and usually incredibly honest. However it doesnt seem to come across so much when it's written down so

Vid Probably helps if you know his backstory, but the short version is his brother died of an overdose then he followed that line, pissed away a couple of marriages etc

Low - Death of a Salesman (the best song about being a failed musician ever

So I took my guitar

And I threw down some chords

And some words I could sing without shame

And I soon had a song

I played it around

For some friends but they all said the same

They said music's for fools

You should go back to school

The future is prisms and math

So I did what they said

Now my children are fed

'Cause they pay me to do what I'm asked

I forgot all my songs

The words now are wrong

And I burned my guitar in a rage

But the fire came to rest

In your white velvet breast

So somehow I just know that it's safe

And my favourite lyric of all time (possibly)

Blind Melon - St Andrews Hall/Fall (depending on the version)

I can't tell you how many ways that I've sat,

And viewed my life today.

But I can tell you I don't think that I can find easier way

So if I see you walking hand in hand in hand with the three armed man, I'll understand

You should have been in my shoes yesterday

+1 on Low, one of my favourite bands. Here's one from The Wrens, "I've Made Enough Friends" off their 1996 album Secaucus. Just one of the best falling in love/lust/whocareswhich? songs ever.

brush your shoulder w/ an off-hand gesture / I’m holding your stare /

invite me upstairs

we look for reasons to stand closer touching / we look at a book / of

pictures you took

see who’s taller and then arm wrestle a bet / I match your breathing

our chins touch closer we get

it’s hours later and we’re not much further / we’ve made it to bed /

your shirt’s ‘round my head

hands full of your hair and I can’t stop kissing / I’m licking your

lips / my hand on your hips

a rush of wonder this charm we’re under might last / are we done with

others all other lovers are past

what’s beginning? a brand-new winning, I can’t stop kissing, I can’t

undo your buckle while you bite at my neck / I’ve waited no end / I’ve

made enough friends

we’re down to nothing and I can’t stop shaking / you’re nothing but

skin / I think we’re done in

rush of wonder this spell we’re under might last / we’re too

hoping, our years are showing and fast /

we’re too desperate, too soon investing, another lesson I’ll pass

From the new Elbow album, this track has been round and round my head all day.

An Audience With The Pope

Sweet Jesus I'm on fire.

She has the sweetest, darkest eyes.

And when it comes into her eyes,

I know iron and steel couldn't hold me.

Good god I'm easily bruised,

So often a moth to her flame,

And the things that she's asked me to do,

Will see a senior saint forgetting his name.

I have an audience with the pope,

And I'm saving the world at eight.

But if she says she needs me, she says she needs me,

Everybody's gonna have to wait.

(Where could she be)

Was that a minute or an hour?

(Where could she be)

She turns the hours into days

Kill the phone, cover the cage,

And wait for the doorbell to ring.

(Where could she be?)

No she won't come running

(Where could she be?)

The world is turning at her pace.

I'm going to kill the phone, cover the cage and wait for the doorbell to ring

I have an audience with the pope,

And I'm saving the world at eight.

But if she says she needs me, she says she needs me,

Everybody's gonna have to wait.

Been listening to MeWithoutYou a lot recently, awesome album (It's all Crazy...)

They're maybe a bit too obsessed with foxes for Americans (according to Wikipedia it's a religious thing in a way I cant be arsed to explain here), but some of their lyrics are genius

The Fox, the Crow, and the Cookie

Through mostly vacant streets,

A baker form the out-skirts of his town,

Earned his living peddling sweets from a ragged cart he dragged around.

The clever fox crept close behind,

Kept an ever watchful eye,

For a chance to steal a ginger spice cake,

Or a boysenberry pie.

Looking down was the hungry crow:

When the time is right, I'll strike,

And condescend to the earth below

And take whichever treat I'd like.

The moment the baker turned around

To shoo the fox off from his cart,

The crow swooped down,

And snatched a short bread cookie and a German chocolate tart.

Using most unfriendly words,

That the village children had not yet heard,

The baker shouted threats by canzonet to curse the crafty bird.

You rotten wooden mixing spoon,

Why you midnight winged raccoon,

You better bring those pastries back you no good bird-black macaroon.

The fox approached the tree

Where the bird was perched, delighted in his nest.

Brother Crow, don't you remember me?

It's your old friend Fox with a humble request.

If you could share just a modest piece,

Seeing as I distracted that awful man.

This failed to persuade the crow,

And in the least so,

The fox rethought his plan.

Then if your lovely song would grace my ears,

Or to even to hear you speak,

Would ease my pains and fears!

The crow looked down, with a candy in his beak.

Your poems of wisdoms, my good crow

What a paradise they bring!

This flattery pleased the proud bird so,

He opened his mouth and began to sing:

Your subtle acclamations true,

Best to give praise where praise is due.

Every rook and jay in the Corvidae's been raving about me too.

They admire me, one and all,

Must be the passion in my caw,

My slender bill known throughout the escadrille,

My fierce commanding claw

I've got a walnut brownie brain,

And molasses in my veins,

Crushed the graham cracker crust,

My powdered sugared funnel cake cocaine.

Let the crescent cookie rise,

These carom colored almond eyes,

Would rest to see my cashewed princess,

In the swirling marble sky.

Would rest upon my knee,

Where all divisions cease to be,

A root-beer float,

In our banana boat,

Across the tapioca sea,

When letting all attachments go,

Is the only prayer we know,

May it be so,

May it be so,

May it be so,

Oh.

I like listening to some Hold Steady whith a few drinks and this one stands out sometimes.

Hey citrus

Hey liquor

I love it when you touch each other

Hey whiskey

Hey ginger

I come to you with rigid fingers

I see Judas in the hard eyes

Of the boys who worked in the corners

I feel Jesus in the clumsiness of young and awkward lovers

Hey bar

Hey tavern

I find hope in all the souls you gather

Hey citrus

Hey liquor

I love it when we come together

I feel Jesus in the clumsiness of young and awkward lovers

I feel Judas in the long odds of the rackets on the corners

I feel jesus in the tenderness of honest, nervous lovers

I feel Judas in the pistols and the pagers that come with all the powders

Lost in fog and love and faithless fear

I've had kisses that make Judas seem sincere

Lost in fog and love and faithless fear

I've had kisses that make Judas seem sincere

I think it's lovely, little ditty.

First of May by Jonathon Coulton always makes me smile.

I woke up this morning

I had a scone and a large house blend

And then a little conversation with my squirrel and chipmunk friends

I said I’m sick and tired of winter

And I wish that it was spring

And then a little fellow named Robin Redbreast

Began to sing

And he sang

"Ooh ooh child, what’d you think the cold winter’s gonna last forever?

Ooh ooh child, now’s the time for all the people to get together

Outside

Cause it’s the first of May, first of May

Outdoor fucking starts today

So bring your favorite lady

Or at least your favorite lay

The water’s not cold baby dip in your big toe

Maybe I’ll see you in flagrante delicto

Grass below you, sky above

Celebrate spring with a crazy little thing called.....fucking outside"

I thanked him for the information

I cried a little when he flew away

I watched an episode of The People’s Court

And I tried to plan my day

I called up my old lady

She wasn’t home so I called my girl

I asked her if she’d like to join me as I

Entertain the world

And I said

"Ooh ooh child, I’ll bring a blanket and I promise I will brush the ants off

Ooh ooh child, you’re gonna like it when we’re taking each other’s pants off

Outside"

Cause it’s the first of May, first of May

Outdoor fucking starts today

So bring your favorite lady

Or at least your favorite lay

The water’s not cold baby dip in your big toe

Maybe I’ll see you in flagrante delicto

Grass below you, sky above

Celebrate spring with a crazy little thing called......fucking outside

So we went to the park together

We were walking in the midday sun

We met all kinds of people and we

We fucked everyone

We fucked a lady who sells ice cream

We fucked a man with a tan Shar Pei

Everyone who needed fucking well they

They got fucked today

So come on

Ooh ooh child, open your mind and your heart, feel the spirit moving through you

Ooh ooh child, you’ll feel the warmth of the love when I stick it to you

Outside

Cause it’s the first of May, first of May

Outdoor fucking starts today

So bring your favorite lady

Or at least your favorite lay

The water’s not cold baby dip in your big toe

Maybe I’ll see you in flagrante delicto

Grass below you, sky above

Celebrate spring with a crazy little thing called....fucking outside.

I really liked the concept behind yours DC

Frightened Rabbit - The Modern Leper

A cripple walks amongst you all you tired human beings

He's got all the things a cripple has not

working arms and legs

And vital parts fall from his system

And dissolve in Scottish rain

Vitally he doesn't miss them

He's too fucked up to care

Well, is that you in front of me?

Coming back for even more of exactly the same

You must be a masochist to love a modern leper

On his last leg

On his last leg

Well, I crippled your heart a hundred times

And still can't work out why

You see, I've got this disease I can't shake

And I'm just rattling through life

Well, this is how we do things now

Yeah, this is how the modern stay scared

So I cut out all the good stuff

Yeah, I cut off my foot to spite my leg

Well, is that you in front of me?

Coming back for even more of exactly the same

You must be a masochist to love a modern leper

On his last leg

Well, I am ill

But I'm not dead

And I don't know which of those I prefer

Because that limb which I have lost

Well, it was the only thing holding me up

Holding me up

Well, I'm lying on the ground now

Walking through the only door

Well, I have lost my eyesight

Like I said I would

But I still know

And that is you in front of me

And you are back for even more of exactly the same

Well, are you a masochist to love a modern leper

On his last leg

And you are not ill

And I'm not dead

Doesn't that make us the perfect pair?

Just you and me

We'll start again

And you can tell me all about what you did today

What you did today

For what it's worth I think this song is about self loathing, that he's deliberately ruining his life as though gutting off his limbs. Could be drug addiction though, awesome imagery though
