one-armed dwarf Posted July 18 Posted July 18 Not as cool as some of the other trailers. I'm still not sure who I'll stick with in this, Katara seems really amazing but has a pretty high execution barrier for the cool shit. So I'll probably use Korra as a Giovanna style 'learning the game character' and make Katara the long term project. Definitely plan on hitting it hard for the release period, before people get really knowledgeable at the game. I think my main protip would be to learn defense early on, like how to use flow defense. It doesn't feel like SF or Strive where you're using reversals and fishing for gaps. I also really like how the game constantly returns to neutral. There's oki in there but it's not just a single player gameplan that you just force people to play forever and ever
one-armed dwarf Posted July 22 Posted July 22 Max did a stream with the devs A lot of stuff in there about the character that got revealed, he looks pretty technical with the 'refly' stuff in his combos and is maybe a bit too technical for me to want to even look at just yet. But that combo drill thing they have in there looks cool Have bookmarked this as a Katara replay cause she's dope I really like the way oki works where you can jump out of knockdowns, so the aggressor has to do a hard read. I think hard knockdowns are the only ones where you can't do that, but HKD seem like they aren't just given to you for free. Might be wrong on both of these though The combos might be really long but at least things can reset to neutral quite often, so it looks like real fighting and not a casino. Though I'm sure as the game evolves people will come up with busted pressure concepts and flowcharts Avatar Aang is cool with the flight and zoning options as well
one-armed dwarf Posted July 23 Posted July 23 This is out, apparently it has no ranked? Just free for all matchmaking. What the hell, in a game this sweaty lol. Damn, I dunno man, I'll give it my best shot but there's got to be some sort of skill based matchmaking behind the scenes or else this is impenetrable I fear. maf you're morally obliged to get this game now, it would be evil to leave me hanging with the killers edit, ranked is advertised on the steam store page, people seem to think it requires a patch to activate it. So you're off the hook maf edit 2, reading online it seems like it's coming in super hot to coincide with a new Avatar movie, I didn't know Jim Cameron was working that fast edit 3 they delayed it for over a month on xbox, announced yesterday, and apparently 'Nightmare Korra' and Avatar Aang are in a placeholder status atm. Switch 2 delayed as well. Coming in hotter than Cyberpunk. But that's very rough for a fighting game, which needs to land with a splash on release to draw a big crowd to stick around, especially as it's very likely Tokon's open beta tomorrow/release soon will attract a lot of attn away from this, which might include me if I get as smoked by unranked matchmaking as I'm expecting. I hope at least there's fewer Azula players than the beta 1
DANGERMAN Posted July 24 Posted July 24 Yeah that doesn't sound good for it's long term chances. Who knows though, maybe the licence keeps it alive
one-armed dwarf Posted July 24 Posted July 24 They've said now that ranked mode is 'coming soon', but I think you can measure the impact of a bad launch on a fighting game in a matter of days, particularly with Tokon's beta out now and, from listening online, drawing a far more favorable reaction than its previous beta did. Casuals will leave the game, it's already a bit sweaty for just rolling up on and there's a coin toss of a chance that some kid who likes Avatar will be forced to fight an unreasonably skilled Azula doing jump in confirms to a 26 hit staircase combo in the corner, in a game where the universal anti-air is an airgrab. Everyone needs a ranked mode if they're playing online so it feels competitive and fun at all levels I didn't get smurfed like I thought, just ended up fighting lots of people who were just trying to figure the game out, most who hadn't touched the beta I think. I got some rage quits when I did my BnB that I learned in the beta, a launch combo with Korra that can do so light corner carry, though I mostly dropped it.
Maf Posted July 24 Posted July 24 I don’t think I’m going to get it anymore. I was never too in to the game anyway but looking at the characters, maybe this is not a good take, the Avatar characters are all a bit lame. I just don’t find any appeal here or want to play or learn them.
